How a Bird Can Destroy a $100 Million Airplane I used to work as a baggage handler at Glasgow Airport. and during one shift an Air 2000 Boing 757 started its take off. My supervisor says to me -my family are on that- (his mum, dad and brother. It gets a few feet off the ground when suddenly thick black smoke starts billowing from one of the engines and I turn round and see my supervisor turn chalk white. The plane landed fine despite over shooting the runway by a few metres. Turns out a pigeon had been sucked into one of the engines. Once it had been towed off and parked me and a mate went round for a look. A couple of the fins in the engine had been destroyed but amazingly the pigeon was relatively intact although a little charred. I had always though a jet engine would mince a bird. Glasgow Airports runway is quite tight, at one end you have a motorway and at the other a river so theres not much space if you do overshoot the runway.

Curious about the math. How much energy delta is present with variable -bird velocity- versus any velocity of the commercial multi-engine heavy jet aircraft in-flight? I'm not seeing a sigdif. Help me out.

TO MAKE SURE YOUR PLANE DOESN'T GET HIT BY BIRDS, FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING STEPS: duct tape machine guns over the visor of the plane, since the pilot cannot see, they will crash, BUT NOT BECAUSE OF A BIRD!
reply

They're Angry Birds
rulers of the skies and shall not let anyone or a machine take over the flight so birds decided to take action and destroy the threat of airplanes that's dominating the skies.

-Worldwide, it's believed that bird strikes cause about $1. 2 billion of damage, more than the price of 2 brand new airbus A380 800s. -
Yeah, but how many Toyota Corollas is that?

reply

When I was doing my pilots licence, a locally based Douglas DC3 hit a Pelican on the starboard side of its nose. The skin of the plane was ripped open almost 3 meters.
reply

If you look about it the other way. A 100mil plane killed a bird. I bet the bird was thinking before dying. what the fock are you doing so high up in the air.
reply

cant airlines just put a wire grate over the engines so the birds cant get to the them
i know nothing about planes but seems pretty straightforward to me?

reply

Who would win
A giant modern technology 100 million USD worth made by hundreds maybe thousands of people
a couple of feathers

reply

Airport: Brings in National Guard Sharp Shooters.
Soldier: Who's the target.
Airport: Feathery bastards. Kill all on sight.

reply

make the engine blades sharper so they shred the bird to tiny pieces and pass through the engine out the back harmlessly

-So what's the most dangerous thing in the air? -
-Bird-
-what-
-Bird. -
-I don't get it-
-I SAID BIRD-

reply

the best way to protect the turbine from a bird strike is put one of the round metal covers kinda like the sewer covers
reply

-US Airways flight 1549. -
It took me a minute to register that event, I saw the movie and heard about the incident

reply

Why did I bother gaining years of experience when I could have just learnt mechanical engineering from brilliant --
