Why 50% of Canadians Live South of This Line
video description
Starting from John Cabots landing in Cape Breton Island(in Nova Scotia) in 1497, Jacque Cartiers exploration of the St. Lawrence River and his first settlement Charlesburg-Royal(present day Quebec City) in 1541, then we have Samuel Champlains Port-Royal(also in Nova Scotia) in 1605. After that, most European settlement happened south of all these first explorations then the border just happened to be drawn right below them. This alone explains much why Canadian descendants live so close to the border. Also, on the east of the great lakes, American Revolution forced the loyalists to fled to north so it is quite obvious the border was drawn right between the loyalists and the patriots, adding more possibility of large Canadian population very close to the border.
By ecology I mean, people will settle where there is land for agriculture. At least before the industrialization. North of the 49th parallel, there simply is not much land suitable for settlement. Metro areas in the interior(particularly in Alberta) prove that Canadians will settle far away from the border if they could have done it, not that they chose to live close to the border mainly because its close with another country. Yes, there are modern population boom near the border relying on industries of the US, but thinking of this in the other way, I guess the US built many factories(or made investment) in Canada right across the border because there already was a big population there.

What a ridiculous premise. stating that Canadians -pretend- to live further north and that this video is -embarrassing- to us. I guarantee, none of us is embarrassed about the percentage of the population living below the 49th. Where I have trouble is the subtle assertion that these are the only areas that matter. While it's true that the greater share of our population lives relatively near the Canada-US border (overly represented by the behemoth Toronto and Montreal, the rest of the country still matters very much. As many have pointed out, it's where a sizeable portion of the world's supply of grains, lumber products, petroleum and mineral resources are produced or extracted. Not to mention that Canada is the source of 20% of the world's fresh water supply. And the fact that the less populated regions of Canada are home to many important historical sites and stunning and pristine natural vistas that aren't centred around Toronto.
It's also rather outrageous that the video seems to imply that the Great Lakes region is the only area where large-scale farming is possible. I guarantee all of us on the farm-intensive prairies and the folks in orchard/forest-filled BC are laughing about that one. If you're going to make a video about Canada. do a little homework first. I would almost guarantee this video was produced by an American. cementing the opinion held by most Canadians that Americans truly don't understand their NORHTERN (yeah, I said it) neighbours at all. We remain, the true north, strong and free!

I forget the game show but I think it was Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and the question that was asked to visit contestant in the contestant did not know. And the question was what country borders North of the u. s? This lady was in her thirties or so and did not know where the US was thought it was a country and you're up or Middle East and if she had a clue it would have refer to the United States and the country bordering north of United States is the country called Canada. What's funny she didn't get the question right.
Really though did this guy doing this video fail on the kids game show are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Or even watch the show where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Hahaha

I moved from Ottawa to Sudbury and even though Sudbury is a big northern town up here it is quite remote and sparsely populated. It-s so rocky and barren here, astronauts from the Apollo missions came here to practice exploring the moon-s surface. Although the city has made efforts to add more vegetation, the soil is very thin and you can-t farm anything here. All the mining being done doesn-t help. Produce is pricey enough here because it gets shipped in, I can-t imagine what peoples- grocery bills look like in Iqaluit or even Kapuskasing lol.

The most ironic part about the facts explained here about the provinces around the Great Lakes is that they are historically by definition what we call -have not- provinces in Canada, meaning the rest of the provinces pay equalization payments (extra taxes) to keep them afloat. There has been a decent amount of discussion in Canada from the west -separating- from eastern Canada due to the fact that they hold all the voting leverage yet commit next to nothing to Canada despite their abundance of land and how fertile it is

Talking about the -dividing line between Canada and 'America'- doesn't make sense.
Canada is MORE American than what people refer to as -America- (the US)
For the person who disagrees with this fact, for whatever reason, it's because Canada takes up more of (north) America than the states do.
Reffering to -America- could mean either continent.
-America- does not specify any particular country.
Mostly good info otherwise though.

The US economy is set up in a way which allows for economic growth. Canada is not. Canada is a great country but they hinder development and focus the economy on control of the standard 32+ million residents. Makes sense. The US population has growth to over 318, 000, 000+/- Million. Feed, Clothes and House this expansive growth is what America does best. America needs more Canadain Lumber

As a German, I'm always amazed our country is slightly smaller (by about 2 Bavarias -) than the state of California, however we have more than twice as many inhabitants than California being the most populous US state.
Does that have anything to do with Canada? No, just wanted to spit percentual facts-.

Wow, American whining about the border being closed, when the US border going the other way was closed even longer.
Add to that the misspelling of OTTAWA, and a picture of a winery in BC while extolling how Ontario(2000 mi away) even has wineries; earned this video a giant thumbs down.

That -50% of population- line has about 15M people living south of it, or 45% of the Canada's 40M in population. However, the red coloured portion only had 42% of the population in it, since the portion of Nova Scotia south of the line wasn't coloured.

Dude, the border closure kept getting extended because you insisted on spelling Ottawa as Ottowa. You're giving the rest of us a bad name, and they didn't want us up there misspelling their cities names.
