How Maps LIE To You

How Maps LIE To You This video isnt entirely what I thought it would be. The maps we are given to depict the outline of countries and continents and states are inherently incorrect. If you overlay maps of the same area over top of each other in a digital program (or for us old school folk using clear projector slides on top of each other. Doing this will show you the clear problematic aspects of cartography in the fact that none of the maps generated for public use seem to have regularity in their uniformity whatsoever. Most are skewed out of proportion. Australia for instance shows in many maps that New South Wales is around 2 -3 times bigger than Victoria its southern state. Instead New South Wales is actually around 6 times bigger than Victoria and Queensland even more so. Cartographers really need to get with the times.

Uh the north/south poles is based on the magnetic field lines. The magnetic field lines travel out of the north pole out of the earth and around to the south pole.
I would hardly call it a -lie- that we orientate maps with north being the top of the map. having standard conventions makes for easier reading of maps especially if you are comparing different maps. If every map had a different orientation humans would likely end up make more mistakes when using the maps, so being more -accurate- by having randomized map orientations would not have any benefit. It's one of the cases where accuracy creates more problems than it solves.

new york and arkansas are the same size?
how?
new york is taught to students as a big/large state and most students cant even point to arkansas on a map and only reason most people have ever heard of it is because the clintons are from there.
so how is a map that distorted that new york looks 2-3 times the size of arkansas but real life lore just said they were about the same size?
thats like the video about afghanistan just watched little bit ago where real life lore said afghanistan is bigger then france? how? afghanistan looks small or tiny on most maps and france is really large on most maps

The Republican/Democrat map that makes the US look much more Republican than Democrat is also very valid: It shows you that outside the big cities where people are removed from real life, every area is predominantly Republican.
Who do you think is more well-rounded in their outook - a city person who spends their day commuting and working in a crowded environment, too busy to care about having a family etc. . or a person who lives in a natural environment, with a rich family life? Hint: it's the hillbilly Republicans who have much more common sense and real-world experience.

reply

Yes but the whole red vs blue map isn-t a good example because while yes, it-s not very useful. You didn-t mention that states vote for a president in reality, not individual citizens. It-s basically the same as how the EU works. Except in the EU Countries vote for their leader and then the EU bureaucrats do whatever the hell they want. Edit: also-the bureaucrats in this would be equivalent to the federal government. Something legal in a state is often still prosecuted by the federal government. Like Weed or -pot- for US readers.

I understand that the earth wobbles on an axis where the focal point of where the sun's rays hit the earth moves about 5. 5 Mm from one extreme to the other over the course of 1 year. North and South themselves may be arbitrary but I feel like they serve an, albeit in looser terms, a similar purpose to the positive and negative ends of a magnet. Another map I don't see often is one where the flat map depicting the Americas on the right side and Europe on the left.

I think I have a (admittedly slightly silly) theoryas to why the map looks wrong upside down:
most of the major landmasses seem to be bulkier and flatter on the northern side, and narrower and pointier on the southern side. since we know that these shapes represent things with a top surface that we can walk on, we like having the flatter side (which a 2d person would likely have an easier time walking on) pointing up.

The largest geographic feature on earth is the Pacific Ocean. Pacific centered maps make a lot more sense. However, the east-west political paradigm is so deeply embedded in the historical understanding of the world in some countries that they chop the Pacific up! I suspect that the way the map is drawn helps perpetuate the -us and them- mentality between east and west. A little change in perspective could help.

The US election map is half of the complete story. Yet, the election system is specifically designed to be a balance between the two. So, it isn't a wrong map, it's still useful to give a picture of the regional half of our elections. That's why the House is by population and the Senate is by state. That's also why the electoral college exists as an intentional mixture. It's a republic not a democracy.
reply

6: 47 - The USA is a terrible example for your argument. It is not a democracy and therefore a map of the people percentage wouldn't matter at all and would also be innacurate to how iur elections are decided. The map of land works because it represents the counties which are represented by elected officials, and the state is also represented by elected officials. Its a republic.

Flat earthers always avoid the problem of why their flat map doesn-t work to accurately describe the world. The most common map they use has the shortest distance from Australia to South America going over the North Pole. I find it fascinating how many different types of maps there are just to represent earth, let alone different aspects of it.

You can tell if a cell coverage map of the US is inaccurate just by looking in the area around the border between Virginia and West Virginia. That is the National Radio Quiet Zone around the Green Bank radio astronomy observatory, and if a cell coverage map shows that area to be comprehensively covered, that ought to be a -big- red flag to you.
reply

I love your content normally and I-m subbed to nebula but this video was a meh. We know how the electoral collage works and the continent size has been done to death.
Edit; we go by the compass for magnetic north, that only applies to this planet that we live on so I don-t think you point on that was in any way profound.

reply

Up is. North so you can orient with a compass and navigate. why else would you use a map? It is JUST a navigational tool. as far as top, bottom, what ever, it is just to easily orient yourself. Yes you can orient with one south up, but it is more difficult. If you hold a compass you have to face north first.
reply

Bruh no offence lol but I expected the whole Mercator map thing to be the first thing you brought up so I was a bit disappointed because I had to watch the whole video for it - also I would-ve liked you to bring up the gall peters map. Still a great video tho -
reply

the map of america where people actually live is WILDLY inaccurate. there are almsot 12 million americans living in teh pacific northwest, between seattle and portland, and another 4 million living nearby, but it didnt even get a dot. Do better simulations.
reply

this is the worst video i've seen from you. this -map of america where people actually live- must hve been done in 1790, because it ignores the entire western united states, the second most populous region of the country. You're making a fool of yourself.
reply

The US is Republic and the President is elected by the states not by over all popular vote. The US is a democratically elected Republic. Like a more inclusive version of pre-emperor Rome. Not like the City States of Greece.
reply

Most of these examples just show people can not interpret data for what it is. They imagine more into it than there is. And others were just plain lies. I don't see the problem with maps it is people interpreting correct maps.
reply

Subway maps aren't inaccurate because they don't represent distances. That would be like saying that a globe is inaccurate because it doesn't show the curvature of spacetime - it's not supposed to.
reply

If you will think, how can you burn a whole continent when in fact the continental Australia or the middle part is without plants and is desert. In cannot burn unless it has oil scattered.
reply

Nah, that map of Straya under fire is wrong in myriad ways.
Yes, it was the worst Summer in recorded history for bushfires (wildfires) on this continent, but that map is totally flawed.

reply

Your map is 2d. Which shows a flat earth.
You missed the fun.
Dwelling on the past is not the way forwards.
Why the macador projection. How about a photo of a globe.

reply

A much clearer example of maps lying is naming things the wrong name for propaganda like how you see in the middle east, the Arabian Gulf is wrongfully named the persian gulf.
reply

Literally just ran through a bunch of common Sense facts and tried to sensationalize all of them to make himself sound really smart after making a very political statement
reply

6: 41 wrong, it's because most democrats live in cities, while most Republicans live in rural areas. So counties without large cities like New York are usually always red.
reply

In the whole world the color red is associated with socialism, communism i. e. -reds. -
In the US the color for the Republicans is red and the Democrats are blue.

reply

So since the advent of the satellites and space walks if the maps are not showing the truth it's because the GERMANIC lies are still in enforcement for brainwashing.
reply

Good video but I don-t like the anti electoral college propaganda. If we had a voting system based on population the tragedy of the commons would be a lot worse.
reply

People say that the island of bermeja was nuked by the US because the island expanded Mexican maritime claims in the Gulf of Mexico into areas rich in oil.
