Cities are primarily points of consumption, rather than production. That is, most cities consume as input: energy resources raw materials clean water food. As output, they produce: garbage wastewater CO2 other emissions/air pollution.
Occasionally, a city is a host to some kind of industrial production facility that takes in energy and raw materials, and outputs higher valued manufactured goods. Occasionally cities produce other things considered valuable to people outside of the city, such as artistic/entertainment products like movies, music, and video games. Once in a rare while, a city produces some kind of new technological innovation. However, cities that produce valuable things for broader human society beyond the city, are often more of an exception than the norm. For the most part, most of the world's cities are more places of consumption rather than places of production. Consequently, paying to build a new city is mostly a money/resource consuming operation, rather than a money producing/profit generating operation. City construction is not normally a self funding operation.
Building factories and mines, so long as they are producing things considered valuable and in demand by society, are profit generating, rather than profit consuming. It is thus easier to build industrial megaprojects, compared to non-industrial/consumptive megaprojects, such as a city.
Saudi Arabia has been blessed with an abundance of energy resources, not just in the form of hydrocarbons like natural gas and crude oil, but also unusually high solar power generating potential. Energy is the foundation of industrial production, which is the source of most material wealth generation for society.
Saudi Arabia's abundant natural gas supplies could be used to make Saudi Arabia into a major effective net food exporter, if it built large quantities of methane to animal feed conversion plants (ex: using methanotrophic microorganisms like Methylococcus capsulatus. Saudi Arabia could use its vast sand and solar power potential resources to become a dominant global manufacturer of glass and semiconductor products, including complete solar panel modules (which require a non-negligible amount of glass and energy input to produce. Saudi Arabia could cover its deserts with solar panels, and use the electricity to become the world's largest producer of high energy consuming materials, like refined metals including steel, aluminum, titanium, and magnesium, along with non-metallic substances like glass, fiberglass, sodium hydroxide (an important industrial chemical commonly produced from electrolysis of salt water, PVC/CPVC/vinyl plastics (which require chlorine, produced from electrolysis of salt water, in production of sodium hydroxide. Sodium ion batteries could also be produced in large volume in Saudi Arabia. Transportation devices like automobiles and air/space ships could be manufactured in Saudi Arabia.
With abundant enough energy resources, like what is available in Saudi Arabia, practically everything considered valuable by human society can be manufactured. Most nations have at least some energy resources, but few have been anywhere near as blessed as Saudi Arabia.

As far as I am concerned The Line would be the medical empire of the world because as daddy Abdullah adziz al ibn sauds daughter and king Salman sister and because daddy Abdullah adziz al ibn sauds died sick i would build The Line as the medical empire of the world and reaches the world over and over that would make the world the best medical capital of the world that would begun as the medical capital of the world as a medical Memorial Hospitals to king Salman and King Abdullah adziz al ibn sauds as the medical capital of the world because no one wants to ever die sick like king daddy Abdullah adziz al ibn sauds did from the Tuskegee experiment that caused daddy to did of a early death that was so unnecessary from the lack of health care!

You can walk 2. 9km in 15 minutes. I have a friend who lived just about that distance from me when we were growing up (actually, I think it was about 3. 5 km) and he and I would walk to each other's places. He was a fast walker and he'd get to my house quicker than I would get to his. We're also both relatively short, around 5'8/173cm.
The Line IS ridiculous. Any urban planner would tell you so.
Also, I believe attempting to bring water to the desert was once an assessment of one's level of foolishness, let alone snow.
We've already hit peak oil. Kashoggi was right: this will bankrupt the country.

. and for people from the EU, here's an example of the distance shown in a non-EU country
(I'm partly joking and I know you said European) I value your effort but I'd suggest going for different examples that are easier to put into perspective for Europeans, with a further zoomed out map you could say the distance between Budapest and Vienna, or between Paris and the border of Belgium.
And for the Massachusetts example, to an average European that would say as much as the size of Moldova or Belgium means to an average American (which by the way, are both similar sized to Neom and Massachusetts.

Yeah, as if this stuff will gets done in no time at all.
At best, it will be an abandoned project later similar to the multiple massive towering home like in China. From day one, the Line Project had red flags that even a low IQ person can see through its BS promises. Imagine if they have the guts to invest these money into their own actual cities and made life better to improve their global image better. But hey, when you're surrounded by Yes, man so much, its literally impossible to distinguish easy mode fiction to hard mode reality.

This journalist worked for The Washington Post. That's very telling. Never trust the Washington Post. It's a bastion of leftist insanity and a total rag news outlet. Not sure what to believe from this now. That said, I do love the concept of a place like NEOM - minus the AI facial recognition and tracking garbage. Ambitious projects should not be denigrated. It's the old concept of shoot for the stars, you may not reach them but you might just reach the moon. Oh wait, We Did.

Image having enough money to send world hunger, world electricity shortfall, infant mortality related deceases(which have cure for, but are expensive for the poor. and instead wasting it on a fng dumb wasteful project, just to hold up your fragile ego.
They could have used that money to build out huge agro processing plants, and easily become the world largest food producer on par with the Netherlands. Easily could have employeed all of suidi people in that. Such a shame

The Saudi Royal Family are wholly US-educated for 2 or more generations. They are getting their garbled view of what it means to be modern from sources like WSJ and Financial Times. They have futuristically-colonized minds.
Metro news is not left-wing. It belongs to the same group as Daily Mail.

A little bit of sunburn from living in a desert, religious brain rot brainwashing and brain smoothing, too much money, power, and even more fear and insecurity in yourself, and suddenly you make someone like Bin Laden, or Stalin, like perfectly sane people. Good job humanity, good job you ALL.

It's a great idea if you think about it. If the first building is in the worst location, it would make sense to put the next building a little further away from that location. This process would repeat, and the city would naturally form a line as it tries to get away from itself - Patrick Boyle

People go to Dubai, because it's a short stop on the way to somewhere they actually want to go to. Europeans want to go and see the indo-pacific and vice versa. If planes could easilly fly the whole way in a few hours, no one would stop in Dubai.

Why does it feel like the west is against the city though Even if it is unlikely, it would be an incredible accomplishment and should be cheered on. Why should people outside of Saudi Arabia be upset by it It just seems like jealousy tbh.

27: 00: The One World Trade Center occupies a 61 square meter area. This number is certainly incorrect. 61 square meters is about 600 square feet, the size of a small one-bedroom apartment, or a typical four-stall office bathroom.

I think there is an error with the math at 26: 11. In order for a circular city to have the same circumference as the line does length, it would have to have a diameter of 54 km (giving a circumference of 170 km.
