A baby cursed at birth. A fierce battle of good and evil. A true love awoken with a kiss. Since premiering in 1890, The Sleeping Beauty has become one of the most frequently staged ballets in history. So what makes this piece so beloved? And what exactly does ballet bring to this or any other story? Ming Luke shares what makes ballet the perfect medium for stories old and new. Lesson by Ming Luke, directed by Visorama

Thank you so much for explaining to the non-ballet fans! I love ballet more than anything else, and highly prefer it over movies. It's more beautiful to watch and listen to, and in my opinion it portrays the emotion of the story much more than any words could do! Everybody can understand it, in every country. I think some people don't understand that ballet dancers are actors as well, and some don't even know that every dancer and every production does a huge change to the ballet, and that's why different people have different favorite dancers and companies/productions. Every step is thought through and has to be done in a certain way to fit the ballet. They can be done so differently deoending on which role it is, and every tiny gesture with your fingertips can give this or that to the story. Even in my wider family, many think it's just jumping around like a child, because they just don't want to understand it, didn't even watch a single ballet.

Thank you for making this! I hated Sleeping beauty Ballet, and since I watched it 10 years ago have not given another ballet a chance, but the guy I have a crush on is super into it, so this was very helpful in teaching to appreciate something I otherwise would have never given another chance!

I got so excited when I clicked on this video. People dont get how excited dancers get when we are actually appreciated, or when people want to learn about what we do

THEY DUD THE CORRECT CHOREO FOR THE SCENES THEY WERE TALKUNG ABOUT! usually ballet animations just have them leap and twirl around the stage but this was accurate!
