I did it in 8. It says you can't spin new paths, but no rules say you can't cut away existing paths. Move towards shelob, cut the path between you and her. Move toward the right vertex, cut the path above you. Move towards the right vertex, cut the path above you. Once more, move to the right and cut the path above you. Shelob at this point can either head to the vertex and you can catch her, or head back down the path you've isolated where you can move up and chase her down. 8 moves if she makes you chase her down, less if she tries to get past the vertex or moves back towards the corner as her second or third move.

When you enter spider olympics and the finals are just a game where the challegnger ALWAYS wins against the champion if he knows the algorithm to solve the puzzle. I am gonna call it a fixed match ladies and gentlemen. Queen Shelob had no chance to win right from the very beginning.

Well if I were to head straight for the finish line which only leaves one direct route and we move first. We have the advantage of moving first so if we head straight for the end that means shelob would have to finish also?

I had absolutely no chance to solve this one because I inferred a rule that from the solution, couldn't have been there. I thought that if Shelob reaches the other side of the web she would be considered to have escaped.

'And to win you must-'
Me: Make it to the other side?
'catch queen shelob by your tenth move'
Me: That makes sense too.
Plus, 'get to the end as fast as possible' would be a very easy riddle

I managed to find the solution intuitively, but I only had a vague idea of why it worked, mathematically speaking. That was really well explained. Thanks.

Hey, i solved this one. I would summarise the solution as changing the parity of the manhattan distance, then zoning as if checkmating with king and rook
