Explore how scientists use environmental DNA (eDNA) in a technique called DNA metabarcoding to find and track species. Scientists have been staking out a forest in Montana for an animal that s notoriously tricky to find. Camera traps haven t offered definitive evidence, and experts can t identify its tracks with certainty. But within the past decades, researchers have developed methods that can detect even the most elusive species. So how does it work? H l ne Morlon & Anna Papadopoulou dig into DNA metabarcoding. Can you detect the stolen child being transported through vans? Can you detect bank robbers as they pass street corners? We ll chip implants inside the body to track and random scanners around the city to scan for chips. We would be living in a world of stopping crime right in its tracks. Think about it for a second.

This is going to be the next crime fighting technique. They can tell if you walked in the room even if you left no blood, or spit, or hair, or whatever. I better go ahead and set my plan in motion while I still can. They might catch me on cold case files.

Neat technology. A faster way to get an idea of what lives where should provide the public and politicians with a great tool to save or improve bio diversity everywhere. Whether we do anything with that information is a completely different question.

I think we can fill gap between various species and life forms to have a comprehensive view of origin of life and various species of life present at during different ages through eDNA.

More than likely my DNA is all over my town because I spit a lot. And sometimes I randomly poop. Now I'm curious about if they can get DNA from farts.

Do you think they will come out with a automated sniffer soon? It can smell the lynx ( and everything else ) by just being exposed to the air.

At first, the instance reminded me; if a species is perfect at hiding, can we ever see it. DNA barcodes might solve these cases
