Dig into the seasoning known as MSG, and find out how this flavoring was developed and if it s actually bad for your health. In 1968, Dr. Robert Ho Man Kwok felt ill after dinner at a Chinese restaurant and wrote a letter to a medical journal connecting his symptoms to MSG. His letter would change the world s relationship with MSG, inspiring international panic, biased science, and sensationalist journalism for the next 40 years. So what is this seasoning, and is it actually bad for you? Sarah E. Tracy investigates. Vault: Just some anecdotal evidence, but as an Asian living in South East Asia, I've seen some here who claim that msg make them feel weird and they are allergic to it in a sense. MSG has been a traditional ingredient in dishes since the dawn of time here, so to have some native Asians reporting on bad experience with them still peek my interest, I'm still kinda curious about how msg affects people

A lot of racism is being alleged here. Is it racism or lack of understanding (and an attempt to sell papers) in 20th Century America? Racism is knowing the truth and then actively choosing race as a deciding factor, not a lack of knowledge or understanding on a subject. Did the reporters use disparaging comments when referring to the Chinese people? Was some of it a cultural difference not understood by America at that time?
Racism is real and it is bad. It is SO important to not cheapen the impact of the word by diluting the definition to mean a lack of understanding or cultural awareness. Real racism is a choice. Actual ignorance is not (but willful ignorance is not.

Finally, a clear, simple and decisive explanation to this arguably long-standing question. In my younger days, I was told that eating too much MSG was bad for health. I didn't question then, since I didn't really know anything. Now I know better. Thanks a bunch to the Ted-Ed team!
Btw, it's best to just avoid food which contain high amounts of MSG. Glutamate may be safe, but that doesn't mean we can eat too much of it

My mom just has more stomach issues when she eats MSG. She's compared eating food with it, waiting to see its effects, then eating only food without it. When she doesn't eat it, no matter the type of food, she has less issues. Now, it could be a number of other factors, but it is definitely one of the easiest ways to help her out with her stomach issues, by simply avoiding MSG/foods with it.

Others are investigating whether regular consumption of msg could be linked to obesity. Then why is it that America, where msg has been badly connotated for half a century has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, while many Asian countries that use msg more regularly have on average a healthier population?

Wow, you use MSG for cooking, that's so unhealthy says the boomer as he goes to get his 5th smoke of the day after his afternoon coffee, just as he is heading for the drinks to wash down the 1 pound pork belly he had for lunch.

I just want to point out that neither Sodium nor Glutamate are technically molecules, as they were called at 0: 55, but are ions instead. This means nothing for the content of the video itself, it's just a nomenclature issue

I have a 2 pound bag that I buy from a local store, bulk is always cheaper. I use it with a lot of my food, have for years, no bad symptoms whatsoever. If anything, my life got better because my food is far tastier.

MSG is fine, the problem is a lot of low quality restaurants overdose their food with it. When you eat too much sodium (MSG doesn't taste salty so they can add way too much, you feel sick with sodium overdose.
