Uncover the hidden history of the building of Mount Rushmore, and how its creation destroyed sacred Native American land. Between 1927 and 1941, workers blasted 450, 000 tons of rock from a mountainside using chisels, jackhammers, and dynamite. Gradually, they carved out Mount Rushmore. Today, the monument draws nearly 3 million people to South Dakota s Black Hills every year. But its fa ade belies a dark history. Ned Blackhawk and Jeffrey D. Means explore the destruction of the sacred Six Grandfathers Mountain Gia: USA quick to point out other country for misconduct and violation of human right. Sadly, they recognized their own historical mistakes but no plan of action to set things right with those effected.

I personally find the idea of removing Mount Rushmore to be ridiculous. While I agree that hat happened to the Natives was terrible, it's one of America's national landmarks and one of its best tourist attractions. It immortalizes leaders whose individual contributions layed the groundwork of what would become the United States of America, and deserve to be honored. That's like wanting to replace Notre Dame cathedral with a Mosque because of the terrible acts committed Crusaders and Spanish Inquisitors. Even if it has a dark past, it's still the symbol of a country, and standing on a soapbox, yelling that it should be removed doesn't make you any more of a moral person.

So many (rightly) criticized ISIS when they destroyed cultural sites like Palmira but now those same people are arguing for the destruction of Mt. Rushmore.
I'm not even American but I think a civilized society should preserve cultural history, even if it's not from the good guys.
Instead of destroying Mt Rushmore, an interpretation center should be built to educate tourists and give a historical and cultural context.

Honor treaties! And does visiting Mt Rushmore actually bring joy and happiness to road-tripping patriotic suburbanites, looking at the not-so-impressive-in-person busts of people they never knew and didn't actually serve them (while the could be enjoying a relatively less spoiled beautiful natural environment and actual culture?
reply

Sounds like more communist propaganda. Tear down this statue, tear down that monument, because it offended somebody from the past. Erase history nobody will know about it, right Ted.

doesn't the tribe who lost their mountain get royalties from the mount Rushmore?
by comparison look at tribes who lost their land and didn't get one cent

reply

This video is proof that no matter how many treaties are formed, sooner or later it's always the indigenous tribes or people that are at a loss.

Everywhere the US goes death and destruction follows. My condolences goes to Americans (non whites and Natives) for what they had been through.

This is the most imperialist thing that I have witnessed, stealing lands from the natives using treaties that they themselves violate.

It's time kids start learning all of American history in public school, not just the complimentary parts Europeans want to tell.
