So interesting that the narrator for this documentary describes Highclere Castle as Victorian and Edwardian as though the 19th and early 20th century owners built this, from the ground up. This castle was built as an abbey, with a residence for a bishop and living spaces for 300, or more, monks. The 6000 acres mentioned in the introduction, was land granted to the abbey, in the 6th century. The manner in which the abbey, with its 6000 acres, was acquired, as a private estate, was confiscation. In the 16th century the residing bishop was murdered and monks were kicked out, to live as wanderers. This was done by Edward VII.
In my opinion these documentaries on the real Downton Abbey would be more interesting, if producers, writers, and current owners, had the courage and integrity necessary for an honest report. The ancestors of the 21st century occupants acquired their castle as an abbey was confiscated by a 16th century monarch. I say, just write and speak honestly. Many viewers already know the murderous truth, at any rate.

The guests behavior at the medieval banquet was absolutely trashy and lame. There's no excuse for acting that way. Didn't their parents ever teach them manners! They should have come back to clean their mess up after throwing food around and acting like monkeys. I cannot think of any building where I would act that way. Whenever you are a guest at someone's business/property/house you treat it with RESPECT because it belongs to someone else (whether it's a 7-11 gas station or a castle, the behavior should always reflect respect. What's even worse is they were trashing out antique, historical architecture and items that are irreplaceable.

Super disapointed. I would have called this highclere, the second life of the castle not the Story. Because it didn't even talk that Much about the Earl Who build it, big events happening there or anything. Just what happen to avoid the castle to fall into ruined. It's more like, here the problem and there's the solution more of the story of the castle. It's all about what happened in the late 90's and not about and real timeline. Click (touch) bait

I just love it when Queen Elizabeth is sarcastic like that, she's not mean about it, she just reminds me of my Gran. It makes me happy to hear her laugh and have a chance to be normal once in a while. She has so much weight on her shoulders she deserves every happy carefree moment she can get.
I'm American but my DNA says I'm 98% English, Scot, Irish, Welch and the other 2% is Danish, so I hail from the Isles and I have respect and care for her.

This is a nice tue I see: reminds me a bit of Harry Potter. As ever, what a wonderful piece to remind all of us how much Her Majesty has suffered through recently. Heartbreaking. Well I know one person who could cheer her up. If she invites you to cover some of the Platinum Jubilee right by her side, your sense of humor would cheer her up immediately!

The struggle for survival of these beautiful mansions lies squarely with previous generations. They buried their heads in the sand and were too snobbish to actually work at anything, deeming it too vulgar. Bravo to the current Carnavons for actually working to make it a viable enterprise and preserve it for themselves and future generations.

It seems to me that either the manager is incompetent and has no creative power, or he is held back by the idiosyncrasies of the lord. E. g. prices should have gone up immediately. Something is amiss that is not reported on in this documentary. The lord makes his money with horses and all the rest is pittance, really.

I would LOVE to live/work there! I wonder if they would want an older (56 & 60 yr old) couple to work the house and horses? I'm a freelance artist and my hubby is a cowboy. Our horses were bred and ran more than 6k acres when they were born. I would love to paint and repair the house!

There is a castle in North Wales that is striking and ruined. Prince Charles had his Investiture there after he studied Welsh which took about six months to prepare him to speak to an audience. The castle is named Canarvon Castle, but I dont know if its connected to this family.

Timelines volume is painfully low. I can hear the male voices but those of the women and incidental persons are not sufficiently loud. Its really a shame. I give up watching Timeline often mid program and very soon I wont even bother tuning in.

I agree Highclere castle is the best stand in for Downton Abbey. This episode also shows how the old estate system just about disappeared in the 1950s. The relationship between the earl and village can be at times fraught with challenges.

If I was in charge, I would only have the ground floor fit to live in. The floors above would be strictly for venue rentals & tourists preserving ancient heritage. I've never known of a more expensive hobby than horses

Not only do they need to make more films there, they also need to keep the castle open longer than just the summer months to make more money. They need to go to other castles to see how they make money to pay expenses.

saw a PBS Television about High Clere Castle. The Farm store earns 1 million pounds a year. It 30 years to pay off the death taxes of the grandfathers death. Why not buy life insurance to pay off the death taxes?

When they showed those beautiful red drapes that were torn, I thought, why not put a beautiful Victorian trim along the torn area. A long trim that edged the drapes could be beautiful. Just a thought.

OMG. that rowdy convention party at 13: 30 reminds me of something Orson Welles was reputed to have said after walking out of Paul Mason commercial in his old age, No money is worth YOU people!

So sad that celebrating great IT sales achievements led to drunken, loutish behaviour which their own parents wouldn't have tolerated and more akin to the excesses of a Rag Week. Appalling.

its a lovely home, im glad they allow us to see the fine craftsmanship of their estate thru dta, i cant take in enough of the woodworking, if i won the lottery i would pay to work there.

So basically Downton Abbey was on point in that the castles owners only missions in life is keeping the house running. staff no staff. changing times. and the passing on of these worries.

Disgusting display of wealth when there are starving and disabled people! Im very egalitarian and the British have all the wealth for just a few hundred families! They should be ashamed!
