Stylish, fast-moving and filmic, The Riddle of Pompeii finally solves one of the world's biggest archaeological mysteries. In AD 79 the legendary volcano Vesuvius erupted in one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions of all time, destroying the town of Pompeii. For 400 years archaeologists have studied the ancient bodies found buried beneath layers of ash and rock. The explanation for the victims deaths has always been that they were killed by flying rocks and boiling lava. This is the interpretation still given to tourists who visit the site at Pompeii today. Yet an intriguing mystery lies at the centre of this explanation. The people of Pompeii had ample warning that the volcano was about to erupt, and yet they apparently stayed put, awaiting death in their hundreds. Why? The skeletons of those who stayed behind were miraculously preserved in the dust and very few show any sign of damage, violence or attempts to flee. How, then, did they die? This film reveals the terrible truth of what happened to the people of Pompeii on that fated day. Building on cutting edge scientific theories and using very high production values to create beautiful dramatic reconstructions, it finally solves the riddle of Pompeii

Wow. Great documentary. Great scientific explanation of eruption columns, collapse and surge wait for it spoiler alert (well, almost) pyroclastic surge.
Lava, magma, under such great pressure internally before break out, that its like a carbonated beverage before uncorking the co2 dissolved in the liquid, so as to be invisible until release, ejection, expulsion out into a foamy mass, clumps of foamy, honeycomb-like igneous glass-like material blasting apart into smaller bits as the trapped pockets of gaseous steam (and CO2) fizzed out into the eruption stream then falling to earth after kilometers of upward aerial travel, as lighter than water pumice. Showering down like a light gravel rain, with humans taking shelter, some with pillows over their heads, from this gray onslaught.
Such good, intelligible filmmaking.
Kudos to the volcanologists discovering and explaining the mechanism of engulfment and death.

TOO MUCH SENSATIONALISM. AND JUST WHAT IS THE COMPOUND 'GAS' hmmm. and most important IS THE RELIGION OF THE 'MOST HOLY & Intellectual city outside Alexandria. SO the people where glued to their 'Goddesses' /Gods and the antroPOLIgist will NOT even mention 'religion' in POPE COUNTRY! . Yes most folk knew the 'jig' was up and escaped with their goods, Why did not PLINI JR tell of those? hmmm It exposed the ROMAN GODS! And of course, the 'chriistians' took FULL ADVANTAGE. more on my fb

I'm always conflicted with these things. I love ancient history and learning about it through books, documentaries and so on but at the same time it feels disrespectful to go digging them up and putting them on for thousands of people to come at gawk at. We wouldn't know much about them without doing it so maybe it's a necessary evil. I see it as not that much different than tomb raiding. I know there's still so much left uncovered or rediscovered but I'm OK with that.

A fascinating video. Scary that such a dangerous volcano is located so close to a sprawling and growing metropolis. Nearly 4 million people live within 30km of Vesuvius today. I wonder how the Italian government and local authorities would coordinate a mass evacuation in the event of another eruption of the scale of AD79? Thankfully it seems such an eruption would not be due for at least another 100 years.

I've watched a few Pompeii videos and I have a question that seems difficult to answer. Experts say there were 6 pyroclastic flows in Pompeii as measured by the surrounding rocks, yet the bodies were found at the level of the fourth flow. But how could they have survived the first three, especially given they happened as the volcano was exploding?
reply

So wait. what is the real cause of their deaths? Suffocation as this video says? Or they boiled really fast as the other videos say? Because in other videos they show that their brains exploded by heath. Or maybe im confusing what happened at pompeii with what happened at herculaneum?

To become the future by commands and the vials that are not for any other than the one who they were given for from profits that can find the thief even unto the same as all over the pharoah from their hands and feet and voice over the face of their eyes.

I thought that it was common knowledge that the bodies of Pompeiians were mummified by pyroclastic flow. That's the cardinal feature of Plinian eruptions. Plinian eruptions are NAMED for the 79 AD eruptions. And BTW, those are CT scans, NOT MRI scans

It means that, if God wants to destroy, it doesn't mean how much we are civilised or how much high technology we utilise. that's why their bodies remained as examples for us. Today war and corruption around the world warning us for another huge disaster.

I visited Pompeii with my parents and I remember my father being quite affected by the plaster casts. Although sixty years have passed, I remember our visit well. Pompeii and Herculaneum are a stark reminder of how quickly disaster can strike.

Even at that time people were concerned of a major eruption.
I read once of a man who wanted to insure his house in case it was destroyed. His agent assured him not to worry because if there was a major eruption he would be covered!

I can't imagine the horror which everybody experience during the outburst of the volcano, history has always repeated itself throughout the years, Men, Women and Children parished in the most horrific manner, it breaks my heart

Look at hurricane Katrina in New Orleans some people couldnt or chose not to leave, for similar and various reasons, even though experts warned them and 1800 died. It must be human nature.

I think the new theory is that the heat from the flows was the main killer in the city. Not sure how exactly a death from asphyxiation can be differentiated from a death from burns though.

People fear the ending of the world. but everyone of us are facing end of the world everyday. the victim of crime, disease and tragedy.
Imagine how these people met their end.

Very informative video, worth watching, but I've never heard anyone claim that they were killed by lava or a shower of rocks, I've always heard it was hot ash and pyroclastic flow.

79AD no one knew much about vulcanos and they paid the sad price but today there is 6 million living around Vesuvius. well i hope they don't act surprised when the day comes

Being a graduate of history I would have loved to have seen Pompeii in its heyday. To go back in time when it was at its most pristine to take in its culture and art.

If I went into a grave yard and dug up a body I would go to prison yet these guys dig up a thousand bodies leave them where they are you disturb there rest

Even 2004 many died because they didn't know what a tsunami is. And here we are talking about people 2000 years ago who had no idea what a volcano is,
