Afghanistan is not so much a country as a series of shifting borders. A place with no easily definable physical or civil boundaries. A place where war is an everyday fact of life. A place where more children will learn to use a gun than will go to school. About 1. 5 million have been killed during the past 20 years of war. Perhaps another 4 million have fled. Every major road has been torn apart by tank treads. Almost every major building left standing has been blown full of holes. This is the most militant Islamic state on Earth but it was once was peace loving and Buddhist. In the Bamiyan Valley north of Kabul the two largest statues of Buddha on the planet were carved in the third century. David Adams was the last Westerner to exhaustively film them before they were blown up in 2001

At 15: 45, I found it ironic that David appealed to the Afghan ministry of information by cooking pasta punttanesca. not to take away from this classic Italian dish or Davids good intensions, but I would imagine if the true meaning of the word puttanesca was known by the Taliban, it might have been found to be offensive, as anything to do with its meaning is strictly prohibited and severely punished. It is likely that David did not know the origin of word, so I'm sure if was not meant to be a slight. and considering the ingredients used in this dish are readily available to most kitchens, it was a suitable selection Nonetheless, a great documentary and excellent piece of journalism.

I just started watching this. Since this was made the absolute HORROR of the Taliban regime that has taken over this country has destroyed virtually of these Buddhist relics of the past, many that were supposedly protected by UNESCO. This current regime has unfortunately plunged Afghanistan into pure unadulterated darkness! These are all but disippeared due to religious intolerance and arrogance, plus a megalomaniacial conduct of the Taliban against their own people! This is unfethered emotional of hatred and sending Afghanistan backwards into the Middle Ages. Today this year of this comment hase been 2022 CE. Muhammad (PBUH) would be turning in his grave by now.

Unfortunately muslims like these Taliban follow the words written in our holy book without understanding the true meanings of those verses. for example breaking idols mean breaking the stone made statues worshipped by humans. If a statue is not being worshipped it should be left as such. similarly people of that time used to worship photos of saints and prophits. today nobody worship these photographs but these religious fundamentalist have banned simple photography despite knowing that nobody is worshipping these photos. This is the thought that led muslims centuries behind the modern world.

You should really study history before making a documentary. Herat has been an important city of Khorasan since Achaemenid Empire, so the Persians didn't invade their own town, they just wanted to get back their town from British invaders. Also, the name Afganistan was invented by British invaders, the proper name has been eastern Khorasan, part of Greater Iran. Afghans are Iranian people and new political boundaries can't split them from other Iranians, so don't try to give wrong information to people. You can learn more from Richrd N. Frye's books.

Peace to all living beings! I find it ironic that this reporter has the nerve to speak about the pain and suffering of war while eating the brains of the sacred LAMB! How would you feel if a human started eating the brains of your human child? The eating of animals is the eating of death and this is a big reason why all humans love war! When you eat an animal, you are eating someone's child! Who will speak for the pain and suffering of the lamb brains that were fried in this video? Hare Krishna!

For those who think in Afghanistan there is Religion issue. I want to clear for them Taliban's first priority is not religion but killing/harassing other ethnicities in Afghanistan like Hazara/Tajik. As Taliban is 98% Pashtun they uses Religion to destroy identity of other ethnicites of Afghanistan particularly Hazaras.
The main reason behind Taliban in power is intenational community. IC have been supporting Pashtun from past 250 years from Abdali to Ghani/Taliban.

as an Afghan I really appreciate you David for this wonderful video. I last 20 years Afghansitan has develped alot in all sections and parts and after 20 years Taliban again took control of the country.
if I be honest I missed the years before 2001. in those years people were really humble, honest and much more hospitable even they themselves struggled to survive but they were generous. people have changed in last 20 years and they are materialistic.

Thank you David for your bravery in making this documentary. For me personally it brought back memories from my trip to Bamiyan 50 years ago. I also took pics of the valley from the top of the giant Buddha's head.
Back then the faces had already been cut off, but the blackening of the heads had not yet taken place. We can probably give the Taliban credit for that. Whoever had that bright idea should be granted an extra virgin when he gets to heaven.

Excellent show, really enjoyed it. To see the true human side of these people as opposed to what is reported from news corporations is just astonishing. These Media corporations dehumanize much of the middle east and it's people; horrible thing to do. They are so much like us in the West in many ways. Wanting to live and work in peace, raise their families, be happy, love their children. This really opened my eyes as to their true wants and wisdom.

I lived in Pakistan for over 5 years. My father mother and I drove all the way to Pakistan from England. We often went to Afghanistan and Kabul staying in the Intercontinental hotel. Kabul was a strange place then full of flower people (hippies. It was a lovely country with many kind people. We also went one time to see the Buddhas then damaged more by time than War.

David, thank-you for the documentaries. I find them original and intriguing. I feel as though I am there with you. You have given a glimpse of the history 3000 years back to the present. You've shown the bad, what war has done. Also, still showing the human spirit in the villagers and the sweet children's Innocence. I look forward to more of your documentaries.

Bhuddas of Bamiyan was not destroyed because Taliban hates Bhuddism. Instead it was destroyed because it was identity of Hazara people who live in central Afghanistan in province of Hazarajat. Today, in many areas of Taliban there are Bhuddist site they are untouched which clearly expose the hate Taliban/Pashtun have with Hazara people.

Thank you David Adams for this beautiful film about Afghanistan and all the Afghan staff. People were hunger for peace not only for food and the place full of mines its so sad. after the killing of Dr Nakamura of Jpan. we dont hear anymore from Volunteers not after the pull out of Americans and now under the Taliban regime

Splendid!
I'm very happy that somehow i come across with TIMELINE.
you are doing a great work by filming what others would fail.
As per Taliban they seem to be giving more freedom with all their restrictions than some of the most advanced governments.

All Buddha statues are doomed to extinction. everything will fall to the ground, one day, but God will remain forever without being bound by the concept of time. God save the people of Afghanistan from the evil of America.

Always found it startling that the West will give millions in aid to fix am old statue. But will not release Afghan state funds to feed the living starving people.
The contrast is diabolical.

I'm a photo journalist who specializes in traveling to the ends of the Earth. If you watched any of his video's you'd know how completely modest and played down his statement is. Yikes!

This is 100% the fault of the USA west and NATO - they are the sole reason these people are suffering as much. it is obviously a crime against humanity perpetrated by the West and NATO.
reply

Basically there just married 4 or 10 wife and mating for babies to get bigger population, no peace and love fighting & killing each other and destroying all ancient buddhist images.
reply

Two things destroyed this beautiful country and are responsible for the pain that these beautiful people are going through one is the west and the second one is the radicalism!
