Mirny Mine: The Diamond Pit That Can Bring Down A Plane

What at first appears to be an optical illusion, the Mirny Mine is in fact very real and one of the largest man-made holes in existence. But this open pit diamond mine located in the Siberian region of eastern Russia has an interesting ability -- the ability to suck aircrafts into it.

As of recently, China has been manufacturing more diamonds PER YEAR than are MINED! Furthermore, they are manufacturing Type IIa colour grade D clarity VVS i. e. the highest quality diamonds you can find, they are identical to natural diamonds but are a fraction of the cost.
Additionally, the only way you can really determine the nature of the diamond (i. e. natural/synthetic - ie man-made) is by using lab equipment, like X-Ray equipment, etc, standard gemmological testing for diamonds (which are already quite limited anyway) can only take you so far as to identify it as a diamond.
Ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence is a key test for diamonds, if a diamond fluoresces stronger in shortwave UV than longwave, then that suggests it's a synthetic diamond and vice versa for natural diamonds - however, the reaction may be difficult to determine as synthetics are known to fluoresce stronger in longwave than shortwave, like naturals (the key is to look at the pattern of the fluorescence in the diamond as opposed to the intensity and colour.
So in layman's terms, it's a bit of a headache to determine whether a diamond is natural or man made.

Merry Merry mine. my relative in 1800's Matti Haapoja a serial killer/robber asked to be transfered to Siberia for his incarceration, he escaped and returned to Fin and was but back in jail and died at 50y at Finnish prison after trying to escape, killing1 guard with knife, wounding other, run from 3rd stabbed himself 7 times in chest in full diner hall and survived but hung up from sock yarns in his cell and got put for display for 100y. I Wonder nowdays if you escape Siberian prison, do you need to watch out not to fall into this hole too: P

No mention of the slave labor yes it's easy to make money if you don't pay the people who work for you and you don't feed them they die you throw them away and you grab somebody else off the street what a wonderful concept I love communism

Cold enpight to shatter tires? What! So now your facts got to be myths. Like year of Stalins death makes it impossible to award anyone the medal years after theure buried. I dunno man. suckn a plane out of the sky is up there too
reply

-40 is NOT cold enough to freeze oil and shatter car tires. Very, very far from it. Your average vehicle, with the proper coolant, will have very little problem operating pretty much completely normally at that temperature.

I like how the title of the video alludes to a phenomenon where planes get sucked to the ground over the whole but only 1 sentence of the video is dedicated to that fact and nearly no information at all is given about it

Feet and miles. some more fun units that rely on the metric system for equivalence. those are great because sound more like feudal times. The king's foot is the measure of everything!

All that wealth and 42 years later, the entire Soviet Union collapses because it goes broke.
Isn't Communism/Fascism/Socialism a wonderful system of government?
NOT!

Okay. First of all, your voice is so smooth. The words are clear as the gems you're talking about. I learned a lot and also felt like I was in a void of relaxation. Thank you.

Hey! Diamonds are just rocks that are not actually worth anything. Why does a murdering, raping company get to set prices on anything any way? Looking at you de beers.

Im pretty concerned that all the wrong facts in here werent corrected after 2 years. Makes me very skeptical of all the facts in the rest of Weird Historys videos.

Wow, so many mistakes and errors here. For insrance, permafrost is an underground phenomenon and doesn't melt. That's why it's called PERMAfrost!

They wanted to inspect the mine because the Soviets were actually manufacturing diamonds and claiming they were all coming from this mine.
reply

I thought they can now make fake diamonds that even experts cannot tell apart from the real thing. If so, why do they still mine for diamonds?
reply

They should build a City inside. That would be smart to stave off the harsh winters. A food stock and geothermal energy could go a long way.

The arial view looks like a skull with a hole drilled into the head. Really representational of what money will do to you

Sweetheart, it isn't De Beers. It's DeBiers. Also, all the other (actual) facts pointed out by the other non-mouth-breathers.
reply

Do you ever respond to all your wrong facts? People are commenting about the wrong facts left and right. Well? Jerk.

Here's a bit of advice. change the outro. I sincerely enjoy your videos but the outro is becoming very annoying.

It would be interesting to know on what grounds the de beers demanded to inspect the mine in a sovereign country.
