Juana Maria The Woman Who Inspired Island Of The Blue Dolphins

video description

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
In a story of incredible survival, Juana Maria spent 18 years alone on an island after missionaries abducted every other person of her tribe. She lived on San Nicolas, part of the channel islands just off the coast of California. Her tale, both tragic and inspiring, fascinated so many and even served as inspiration for Scott O'Dell's children's novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Last year my teacher chose books for us to read we were in different groups and me and other people got Island of the blue dolphins, and I do not regret reading it. It may seem boring at first but more interesting when you get into it.
Back then was horrible, Im glad we are past those years. Yes, we talk about it, but we aren't living in it at least.

Super strange that there's a group of ppl who refer to others as thugs, rapists, gang members, etc, but, in EVERY historical documentary detailing the interactions between them and others, THEY are ALWAYS the ones stealing, raping and murdering. SMH
Worthless pieces of shit

So sad. The real truth of this piece of history would be even more mindblowing. native peoples held and hold so much knowledge and wisdom- things that we have no idea about and probably never will. But alas, the white man and his Christianity. need I say more?

if u use common sense, they killed her slowly with bs food and medicine, while they study her culture and they books abt her like the island of the blue dolphins/ movies, think about it, THEY USED HER FOR MONEY while she was slowly dying

I hate when I hear that a white explorer 'discovered' an island.
When tribes/civilizations have happily lived there for hundreds if not thousands of years. Before they were 'disturbed' by these nosey ass sailors.

I read this and the follow up book, and bought them for my kids. It made me sad reading about her but also proud of her and how she was able to survive for so long on her own. No dummy can do that

I was born the year the book was published, and I still enjoy it, as it's one of my favorites. I knew it was based on a real person, but didn't know the details. Thank you for this video.

It was not just Europeans that did harm to this Amerindian tribe but also Aleuts too they both executed, raped, molested, harassed, batteried, and battered most of the members yeah

Very true, the genocide perpetuated by the West has just begun to be exposed. Truly, we can't breathe till the absolute truth is acknowledged and not repeated now or ever.

We read Island of the Blue Dolphins in fourth grade, because in California elementary schools, we learn about California history in the fourth grade. Such a sad story.

Its hard to hear stories about atrocities like this! Unfortunately atrocities like this happened all through out history and all over the world.

. the woman they had taken to calling Better Than Nothing.
Well there's a snippet that chilled my soul to it's core.

It was the Aleutians who massacred them. The white colonizers were the ones who rescued the rest of her tribe from the island.

Weird. I saw this movie as a kid and I was just thinking about it a day or so ago. Then, this popped up in my suggestions.
