Being born and raised in Hawai'i, this is true and so many people do not know this because they keep it out of the curriculum in schools across the country like so many other injustices done to other cultures. But we know, and we fight, til this day, to have our land back. Our Queen was imprisoned in her own Palace, in the basement of all places, while Sanford B. Dole and company, white men with a phony claim to governance backed by the US Military, threatened to kill of her people if she didn't hand over the reigns them, all while they sipped cocktails in her Palace rooms. To prevent the bloodshed and loss of so many of her people, she knew the right thing to do at that time was to give up her reign to these bully's. That's what they were, bully's. You have these white men come into our lands and implement laws that made the Hawaiian language forbidden to be spoken. If you did speak it, you could be punished by death. On your own land! They abolished the traditional practice of Hula, which goes back generations and generations. These are stories told through the art of hand movement, passed down, generation to generation. They shipped off young children to boarding schools and if they spoke just one Hawaiian word, they were beaten. All of this at the hands of the white man. It doesn't stop there. They brought in religion, Christianity, and made it mandatory for Hawaiians to learn this. They implemented laws that stated if you did not have legal documentation of ownership to your land, you had to leave. If anyone is not aware of old Hawaiian ways of living, you will learn something today. Back in the days, Hawaiians relied on what is called the Ahupua'a system. And in this system, Hawaiians shared the lands with each other and lived off of it from Mountain to Ocean. Each family had their own parcel of land to grow food and cultivate. Land ownership documents were never needed for this. So when the white man came along, they implemented a law stating that if you did not have a deed of ownership to the land, you had to leave. Sanford B Dole, was one of many who brought his family and others and with this law, and money, and power, and took over lands and bought them, forcing many Hawaiians out of their own lands. Another law implemented was if you didn't have a deed to the land you bought you weren't able to vote when it came to electing officials. And who did this favor? The Whites. Of course all of this would be knew to Hawaiians - having legal documentation of land ownership, voting to elect officials, because again, they never needed any of this when they were under the rulership of the Queen and the Hawaiian Monarchy. The USA bullied it's way in to our Islands, and took what they wanted and basically told the Hawaiians, there's nothing you can do about it. That's why so many of us are upset to this day, and when people comment saying will you should get over it, or you'll never move forward being stuck in the past, or don't blame the white man. No, you do not get to tell us what we should do or how we should feel. We are not the recipients of an imperialist tradition. We were the ones who got stepped on. People like this should learn their history and the history of our Islands so that they realize this is not just some party place you come to, to have fun. There's more to this place than meets the eye.

It's so weird cos I'm from the UK and so over here from what we see on the TV looks like this amazing American island paradise in the Pacific Ocean, that seems like possibly the last (and maybe only) state that still seems to have reminents of their previous culture still alive in everyday life that seems to have survived the Anglization (Americanization) Of their land like although it's blaint to see they're American in accent, culture and life you still see (even on TV) them (and all other races) say aloha or all the flowers they use or even the fact that most of the names of the state are pure Hawaiian names in origin and spelling and not Anglization of the names and although from the UK I didn't know the language was on sign posts everywhere like Wales and Ireland but I did know from the TV that the people there still use many words of Hawaiian origin (people of all races)

There was and still is not a treaty of annexation. It never happened! Hawai'i is still recognized a an independent nation. The reason they never got the same recognition as native Americans, is because we never relinquished our sovereignty in the first place. Our Constitution well established the inalienable rights over the land, before the overthrow of the Hawai'ian government.
The independent nation of Hawai'i still exists as a member of the league of nations according to the international Lawyers Guild, the U. N. and American Laws.
It's international status is:
an independent nation which is under a strange form of illegal military occupation.

I feel the same. The United States has colonized too many lands. And ruined good cultures! I believe we should pull out completely of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Guam, Philippines, parts of Europe etc. we stick our nose in everyones business. And of course by giving Billions upon Billions of dollars to these countries we have ruined them making their own lively hood and money. Think of it as supporting a child through adulthood Not good. Cut the cord, and allow them to grow on their own. I will be watching, and happy to bring good tourism money to them. I know they are tired of receiving all the welfare, and handouts.

- Why can't we aknowledge them as indigenous people?
What is the ultimate benefit for the US Authorities, as in they already eroded the entire Island's culture. What is there to lose in letting them gain normal rights? Is it to hold absolute control over the tourist/immigration flow?

I love living here in Hawai'i (MU) and I love everyone here. I can relate to almost everyone here and it feels more home that back in Chicago. I know that one day, these Islands will become whole and sovereign again. These folks deserve it. in fact, every where Europe ( and america)has gone and shitted on deserves the best of the best.

Now I understand their frustration. I started off just looking for a proper way to make hula skirt for my tutu collection and entered up looking at the history of Hawaii. This history hurts my soul. I hope that we all can learn from this. People should not have to fight for so ling to have their sacred land back. Damn, sometimes I am flabbergasted about how Europeans ruined many cultures.

This is very sad. I hope all you Native Hawaiians get your land back that was lost to greedy, rich, and angry white men. Hawaii is truly a great state and I would not mind if it was it's own country.
