Making mummies in ancient Egypt wasn't for the faint of heart. Mummification was developed thousands of years ago but didn't become standard practice in Egypt until the Old Kingdom (c. 2600-2150 BCE. Embalmers were sacred individuals tasked with making sure the bodies of loved ones were appropriately prepared to make the journey to the afterlife. Ancient Egyptians approached mummification according to a detailed process tied up in myth, preservation techniques, and religious offerings

The mouth wasn't opened so the person could eat, it was opened because ancient Egyptians believed that at the point of death, the Ka or the soul leaves the body through the mouth, and needs to re enter the body in the after-life. That is why the mouth was opened so the Ka would be able to re-enter the body. It was one of the most significant ritual steps in the embalming process.

Be careful about using Herodotus as your main or only source for any subject. He has been caught in lies so his accounts are always suspect. I do know when it comes to ancient Egypt Egypt it's difficult to find firsthand accounts that haven't been carefully curated by the Egyptians themselves. But they are better in a lot of ways than Herodotus.

Just a friendly advice, do not take it as a bad comment please. I think the speed between the commentary and the pictures is not proper. If we read the commentary, the picture goes further. There must be a pause between two lines and the pictures. Thanks. Fantastic information

I get a thumb down! The people of KMT did not call themselves Egyptians nor did they call the land Egypt in ancient times. Some wore wigs some wore their original hairstyle, Lady Rai is a perfect example. They wore braids in ancient time.

Hi! Grammar Police here.
The word 'carcass' is inappropriate when referring to a human as it implies waste or unused portions.
Corpse, or even cadaver, is proper.
