Disclaimer: I am not a licensed pilot. However, all the information from the crash report that I read and understand point to the fact that the pilot should not have been flying at night even if it was the middle of summer. Furthermore, I am fairly certain that even instrument rated pilots would not have chosen to fly in a heavy snowstorm. But, as the recent Kobe Bryant helicopter crash showed, some pilots would probably have still taken great risks and decided to fly into the heavy, thick clouds. From the musicians' point of view, I can only imagine the idea of NOT having to be on those busses must have been too much of a temptation to fly. I can only guess that they had no reason to question a licensed pilot, and the one part of the film 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' where they park the rare Ferrari in a very run-down looking garage staffed by the very questionable parking attendant who uttered the (in)famous line, Relax; I'm a professional. ' comes to mind.

Everything is in the documentary 'The Day the Music Died'. People have no idea how cold it gets in Iowa in the winter. Iowa is part of the Great Plains, and there are no mountains or anything else as a barrier to the wind. I broke down in my van, and had to do the repair myself IN THAT WEATHER. At one point i was convinced i was going to die. The skin on my face was in pain from the wind. My eardrums were in pain from the wind. I didn't have ear muffs or a scarf with me, so i took a towel and turned it into a turban. I was so cold i felt like my bones were going to break. I made a mental note to never put myself in a situation were i could get that cold again, and i never have. Also, i miss La Bamba, and Chantilly Lace.

It would have been interesting to see if their music followed fads to keep up, became political or changed genre completely if they had lived and worked with the same management/writers. Valens getting more into making rock versions of classic Spanish songs would have endeared him even more than he is now to the latino community, like at the level that Vicente Fernandez and Selena are revered and celebrated.

But the 1958 Manchester United F. C. (Soccer club here in England) plane crash in Munich was also in a snow storm because F. A. officials had told then Manager Sir Matt Busby that if his team didn't make it back to England, they'd have been out of whatever League (poss European) they were playing in. So they tried to rush home in a blizzard and it crashed instead

Having listened to this story that happened two and a half months before my 13th birthday, I feel that the pilot Roger Peterson, may have been confused by the gyroscope that worked in the opposite way to what other planes he had flown, thinking he was flying upwards and not down towards the ground. Whatever the cause, it was a very sad story at the time.

I was on another tour and the manager of that tour came to my room, told me what had happened and said the promoter of Buddys' tour wanted to ''fill the bill'' and continue the tour. I agreed to fill in and flew up to join the rest of that tour. I played Buddy's guitar and did a tribute to him. a memory for me that is unforgettable, of course.

Everything would be the same as it is now but a couple more Buddy Holly hits. The Beatles would still Beatle, Elvis would continue, the Rolling Stones would Roll on and the Beach Boys would still sing the songs we think of as theirs. Those dead singers, had they not died, would grow old, retire, have a comeback, retire again and die.

2: 47 Fargo and Moorhead are not 400 miles apart; in fact they're not even 400 FEET apart. I used to live in Fargo and could drive to downtown Moorhead in less than 5 minutes.
Perhaps you were referring to the flight distance from Mason City to Moorhead ). but even that would only be around 300 miles.

The pilot was not old enough to rent a car or be insured at a company that uses fleet vehicles. Maybe he learned to fly in Korea which might have overlapped his 18th birthday. If the pilot had half the talent for flying as any one of his passengers had for music, we may not be having this discussion.

i live about 20 mins from this and still yet to visit the crash site. but my town still celebrates their life and i went to a concert with a performer dressed and singing buddy holly songs. its weird to learn about even though ive known what happened since i was a child lol.

i have my dads 1957 PACOMIA JUNIOR HIGH year book he knew richie! My father house was located acrossed the street from the playgrounds when the plane crashed! My grandmother told me horrific stories of that day due the fact she was right there!

Holly would be as great as Elvis-- JP Richardson would have been as big as Wolfman Jack & dominated radio--Valens would have dominated in Laten music. Was'nt there a story of a hand gun that was found in the field that belonged to Holly.

Without the plane being acquired by Holly David I'll still be alive sad to say that but it's true if they would all have just done without clean clothes and huddled with the other people on the buses they still be alive

It would have been dangerous to fly with an older pilot with years of experience in those conditions.
They were to young to understand the risks.

Well if the crash never happened it's possible buddy and Richie would have had more hit song's and it's possible that Jennings may have been a bassist for the rest of his life instead of a rockabilly outlaw.

His manager broke up and the group and wouldn't pay him, compelling Buddy to go on the Tour from Hell to finance his wife's pregnancy and living expenses because he was Broke, which is what got him Killed.

The NTSB report said the accident aircraft had a different attitude indicator that probably confused the pilot because he had never flown with this particular model. That would freak out a lot of pilots.

Fargo, ND and Moorhead, MN are not 400 miles apart. The two cities are across the Red River from one another. Their plane crashed shortly after leaving Mason City, Iowa on their way to Fargo/Moorhead.
