How Woodstock '99 Went Off the Rails

How Woodstock '99 Went Off the Rails

The 30th anniversary celebration of the Woodstock music festival took place in Rome, NY, from July 22-25, 1999. But what was originally conceived as a modern homage to the landmark hippie-fueled musical lovefest of the 1960s ended up mutating into a disaster marked by aggression and mayhem. By the end, Woodstock '99 was being referred to as The Woodstock '99 Riots. What caused Woodstock '99 to become such a low point in music history? The major culprits were oppressive summer heat, jacked-up prices, violent party crashers, and a lack of logistical oversight. When more than 220, 000 people arrived to Oneida County that weekend, no one - especially the festival's organizers - were prepared for what was about to happen

I was 21 at the time and had tickets on hand, vacation time requested from work okayed for 10 days to take the 1900 mile road-trip with 6 of my friends from the Midwest.
Leading up to the early portion of July, 4 out our 6 decided to not go because of not getting time off from work which left just two of us. We debated if it was even worth it as my best friend and coworker who is the biggest music fan even to this day said BroI got a bad feeling about this show and the road-trip if we roll with just the two of us, lets just sell off our tickets for a few extra bucks above retail and watch it on PPV, I was pretty pissed off with him wanting to puss out missing a part of music history.
Long story short we did sell our tickets even below retail a week before the show and watched the PPV totally appalled by every hour that passed and we watched every minute of that broadcast. Still crazy to this day.
Long story shortwhat brought me here was the Netflix documentary on the show and after putting those thoughts and opinions of the show to bed a long long long time ago being the world has changed so much the last 23 years and Im almost 50 now its still crazy how I felt watching the documentary last night. My emotions were really weird that I couldnt sleep well and had to share with my wife the scenario.
Craziest thing is now I currently live not even two hours away from Rome, NY and didnt even think about once until last night. Time flys by and generations get older while new ones are born. Life is short and were not guaranteed tomorrow. Enjoy what time you do have and never forget the good times, learn from the bad.

I went to Lollapalooza in the early 90's and they searched us, too. You weren't allowed to bring blankets, you weren't allowed to bring food or water, etc. The ONLY reason I went was to see Fishbone and Primus. Both played the same day so, I only had to be there for that. Fishbone went on in the afternoon, not long after we got there. (See their video for Servitude to see some of what happened) Primus went on just after dark so, I just kinda wandered around the venue for a while between both bands. I really didn't care about any of the others playing that day. For all I know, I left shortly after Primus was done. The one bad thing that happened was that they started playing their song, My Name Is Mud and people in the audience started ripping up album-sized portions of the grass they were on and threw them at the band. After a few moment, they stopped playing and Les said, Looks like I opened up a can of worms, there! Then tried to get everyone to stop, said that they weren't gonna play until it stopped and said he didn't spend 15 years practicing bass to be hit with dirt. I wasn't very happy with this, either because, not only did I not want to get hit with any but, with all that dirt and grass washing over the entire area, my allergies to both went nuts and I couldn't stop sneezing and blowing my nose for about half an hour!

I feel like the people at this festival didnt know what their limits were. I have never seen like this at festivals. As well that alcohol can make people agressive and it takes away peoples limits. To me it were especially the people that were misbehaving. Throwing shit even to the stage. Such a disrespect. To me this has nothing to do with the people that organized it. In 1969 they probably didnt do such things. Not just because how it was organized but people just behaved. I mean they were already sort of behaving weird from the start in my opinion and I am a KoRn fan. This is one of the reasons I dont usually go to festivals. I see these days more often that people dont know how to behave anymore. Here in my country we have 15 year old kids stabbing other 15 year old kids. Just destroying things and burning things when a protest is going on. Where is the respect for things and the living?

First of all they tried blessing this concert in the beginning with a religion that is totally against the followers of christ. the parents of the young people that went to the first Woodstock. so many prayers to God. This was woodstock 99 first big mistake.
Then you have young people that were not there for music. just a bunch of privileged white nasty ignorant boys.
And to all those women who went for the purpose of nudity. this wasnt the plan of the women in woodstock in the 60s. The only reason they were nude was the heat. and the bathing
This concert showed you the difference between that era and what is to come. there isnt peace now in the minds of young people.

Giant conerts like this are overrated in my opinion. There's nothing fun to me about being stuck between a bunch of smelly sweaty people shoving you around. When im in a crowd trying to avoid the mosh pit sections anf someone tries to shove me into the pit i am so tempted to elbow them in the face and knock them tf out. I used to somewhat enjoy it as a teenager but now at 24 with chronic pains due to diabetic neuropathy (ive been type 1 diabetic since i was 2) i stay clear of things like that.

The 90's genre of music is much different than what is being produced today. By all means today's music sucks! If one was to have a similar festival now you'd get a totally different crowd. No one in their teens and 20's listens to that music anymore. It's hard to find popular rock bands - all of them are in their 60's and 70's and getting today's youth to go see these bands would be difficult.

At Woodstock 69 one vendor was charging 1 dollar per hot dog. They were typically 25 cents. The vendor was lit on fire, promptly put out and people moved on to eat granola and random meats out of garbage cans prepared by a bunch of hippies called the pig something. It didn't turn into this. What happened? Weren't these animals raised by the same animals

As a DJ and ex band booker I can tell you that certain music just makes people more violent. The bookings of the original wooodstock were peace and love in style which is why it went so well. Maybe if people had embraced dance culture like we did in the UK it wouldn't have kicked off like it did. Might as well have booked a load of gangsta rappers lol.

the perps are at fault yet a lot of women voluntarily took their clothes off & walked around testosterone-fueled men. What did they think was gonna happen! Youre dangling a meal before a hungry pack of animals. We have to exercise some self awareness & responsibility. Parents who allowed under aged kids to go share blame as well.

Whats hilarious is that hippy pos Michael Lang handed out candles to 200K people(who were up for 3 days straight high and drunk) as part of a vigil against gun violence?
And wouldnt you know, it took 500 cops armed with GUNS to stop the chaos and mayhem
That clown shouldve got jail time, along with his cheap a55 partner.

What exactly were they expecting Fred Durst to do? Break into a Limp Biscuit cover of All You Need is Love? Or Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together?
Its Limp Biscuit. I was never a fan, even back in 99, but give them a break. They didnt exactly have a diverse repertoire of songs.

It all sounds so abhorrent but all the comments and videos I see of people who were there describe it as the time of their lives; haha makes me wonder how much memory filter and nostalgia is put on the times of your youth either that or if deep down we all just have a very primal taste for anarchy

In Poland they have a festival they call stop Woodstock with approx. 750, 000 visitors and there is no violence and destruction at all. There have also been big music festivals in the USA that functioned without problems, so that Woodstock 99 degenerated is entirely the fault of the organizers.

I remember I went here with some of the people I was working with. We were there when the first fire started, and we got the hell out of there. But when we were trying to drive out of there, the line was so long, and we witnessed the riot.

we, nor anyone can EVER relive or experience an EVENT twice. also unfortunate: that nostalgia from our 1st experience we so badly wish an encore for - is in itself NEVER realized until long after time has gone then we decide to look BACK.

Woodstock 99 achieved it goal. Like the 69 it captured what the feeling was in people of that era. 69 was peace and love. 99 was anti capitalism and screw the government and the man. And the organisers fed that with out realising it.

Im so glad they mentioned the festival being held in July being a horrible idea. Anybody who attended that festival knowing that was the plan signed up for their own dehydration, heat stroke, etc.
reply

It choked the life out of the 90s and thru it on top of a bonfire! what the hell were women doing walking around naked there anyway, maybe they thought it was 60s like, NOT!
reply
