Some more info on Ohaguro. Like you said it originated with the noble women of the court. The reason why these women began to paint their faces white was so their beauty could be seen even in the dimmest candle light. Like you said, it made their teeth appear yellow so blackening became the solution. This was passed down to courtesans who were considered lower nobility, then to wives which Geisha were considered Married to the arts, so they blackened their teeth as well. It was actually practiced by the vast majority of the population who could afford it. Not mentioned above was the fact that it actually helped protect teeth from rot and decay. As you said, it did get banned but Geisha and kabuki actors still practice this tradition. For Geisha, the period before they transition from apprentices to professionals, which is called Sakkou, in more traditional Kyoto, most girls opt for the Ohaguro look. This isn't the same method used in the past and doesn't actually stain the teeth. Instead they paint their teeth with a waxy paste made of a mixture that includes squid ink which comes off super easily, making them need to reapply it throughout the night as food and hot drinks will wipe it away.

My Mom always wondered about it, never asked though. SoAndThen. I know I'm throwing shade at myself but I don't bother with seeing a dentist or brushing what is left of my teeth unless I go out of the house which is hardly ever.
My teeth aren't black even though my diet contains vast quantities of salt and sugar and my mouth doesn't hurt at all.
I do however have gingivitis but don't care to fix it because I' m allergic to the chemicals that dentists use for their patients.
