If you've seen Jaws, then you know the basics about the tragic descent of the USS Indianapolis. Considered one of the most grievous disasters in the history of the American Navy, it saw the sinking of a US heavy cruiser towards the end of WWII and the gruesome loss of a majority of its crew. If the Japanese strike had been carried out just a few days earlier, the crew might not have been able to deliver materials for the first working atomic bomb, Little Boy

No, It's not my worst nightmare as you put it. It's the mere FACT that MY Navy, the same one I VOLUNTEERED to SERVE ON many years later, chose to SCAPEGOAT A GOOD CAPTAIN JUST TO SAVE IT'S OWN FACE FOR ALMOST 55 YEARS in silence! That - IS WHAT PISSES ME OFF TO NO END! I served with an AWESOME Captain in the 1990's WHO ACTUALLY GAVE A SHIT ABOUT HIS MEN AT ALL TIMES! I just hope to God that the men serving to today with my Navy have a man with the same LEVEL OF RESPECT & COMPASSION FOR HIS CREW AS I WAS! I'd like to think that MANY LESSONS HAVE BEEN LEARNED BY THE CIVILIANS WHO WORK FOR MY NAVY AND HAVE LEARNED THAT YOU DON'T HANG OUT TO DRY A GOOD MAN JUST TO COVER THEIR OWNS MISTAKES AS WHAT HAPPENED BACK IN 1945! That - is what I have learned & what PISSES ME OFF when I think of the Men of the U. S. S. Indianapolis!

I believe it was the either bluetip or whitetip sharks that fed on the boys. For 5-6days.
Oceans RAMSEY says SHARKS R SO MISIDENTIFIED. I WANT TO HEAR HER TELL THIS TO SURVIVORS OF THE USS INDIANAPOLIS.
SHARKS R APEX PREDATORS. SO R BEARS. DRIVES ME NUTS WHEN CONSERVATIONIST TEACH DISINFORMATION. WE WANT TO PRESERVE THE BEARS HABITAT & ECOSYSTEM AS WELL. BUT DONT PISS DOWN MY BACK & TELL ME ITS RAINING.
THATS HOW DUMBASS PEOPLE DO EVEN MORE DUMBASS THINGS SUCH AS GETTING THAT TICTOK VIDEO OF BROWN BEAR WALKN BY. THEY LUCKY. CUZ THEY WERE JUST TOLERATED. NOTHIN MORE.

Swim with sharks calmly for a short time and you probably won't get hurt. Swim with sharks for a long time, wounded and bloody, and scared, and you will become one of those rare attacks. Sharks will eat any kind of meat. They are driven by instinct and bloodlust. If you are long enough in water with them they will poke you, until they bite you, and when they bite you with their razor sharp teeth when they see the damage and the blood, they are going to circle you to bite some more until they got you.

I dont think we want to stay in the ocean for 2 hours, and these guys had to stay afloat for a few days. This is a total failure for the Navy not to rescue these men in a timely manner. How can you not know you lost a cruiser? But these must not distract you from the fact that sharks eat people. People in the far east got it right. Better to eat sharks than sharks to eat you. Second fact, the government doesnt care about bombing innocent people and leaving their own people in the sea.

History teaches us always try to be on the right side of history. The captain and the crew knew they were on a hush hush secret mission. A devastating part in so many innocent people being bombed and to this day are still suffering from it. Noone should die in such a gruesome way. By sharks or bombs. It shows how the people at the top don't care about poor people overseas and poor people close to home.

The true story of this is a clear example that sharks do attack humans. I mean this wasn't just one fatality there were hundreds of men taken by tiger sharks so I ask these so called shark experts that say sharks don't attack unprovoked then why did they? & don't tell me all these heroes were mistaken for seals. The tragedy of the USS Indianapolis should never be forgotten & always remembered.

TIP: if a shark comes near you, try not to kick or hit them, If you do so that tells the shark you're free food and you're alive. And they'll kill you.
Edit: The whole idea of being stranded and attacked by sharks is scary, It must've been super traumatizing. I feel so bad for the people stuck on the rafts. I hope they've been able to recover.

kept it a secret for 2 full weeks maybe, but they never revealed that the ship sent out distress signals that were ignored. the navys site still says that it sank too fast to have an opportunity to, even though in reality three people received the signal, one was drunk, one didnt want to wake his commanding officer, and one didnt think it was real.

This is one of those things that makes me wonder at the strength of the human mind. I don't know what the memory of something like that would do to me psychologically. Just bobbing there waiting to be eaten by sharks, day in and day out, slowly dying of thirst in an ocean of water. I don't think I'd come back from that mentally.

My grandfather he fought and survived in world war II in the Navy and today he's not alive he's in the grave him and many others would roll over flat on their faces if they knew the Chinese and the Taliban and all them sort of people have more freedom in Canada in the United States to the ones they fought for us

I agree that McVay was scapegoated. The fact that Captain Mcvay failed to zig zag is irrelevant. SOS ignored. All of them may have perished if it weren't for a routine patrol. The pilot was also told not to land. Kudos to him for ignoring orders and saving as many men as possible.
reply

The only thing worse than all of these men dying due to sharp predation over the course of 5 or 6 days. Most of them covered in oil It's the fact that they use the captain as a scapegoat because no one decided to respond to the SOS calls or when they didn't show up on time

ngl i dont feel bad for them lmao this was cosmic karma for delivering a payload that would murder countless unaware civilians, the definition of a war crime. am i supposed to feel bad for war criminals just cuz theyre american? lmao i'll pass

The thing about the Indianapolis is that the sharks get way too much credit. It's often implied that all the casualties who didn't go down with the ship were killed by sharks, but in reality, most of them died from exposure, or dehydration, or drowning.
reply

My grandfather was one of the sharks. he survived but feels extremely guilty of eating men and was outcasted by his pact they teased him all the way till his death in 1973 thank whale we evolved and only eat seals now and no not navy seals
reply

The man that sunk his ship testified that the crew of the Indianapolis could not do anything about it because they were in a bad spot he was regretful when he heard only 317 or the 1100 could be accounted for most were because the sharks.
reply

An interesting element of McCoy's trial was the testimony of the Japanese submarine officer who sunk the Indianapolis. The officer testified in McVay's favour, basically saying that the zigzag pattern wouldn't have saved the ship.
reply

I really feel sorry for McVay, the government makes scapegoats of people that serve it all the time. Most politicians are filthy sewer rats without a conscience and will do anything to shift blame they see the military as expendable
reply

it wasnt even an attack it was like the sharks got fed in their territory and had a school of meat and blood out of nowhere. imagine being at a resturuant and all of a sudden FREE STEAKS ALL AROUND! youre not gonna try one?
reply

They powers that be wanted the whole crew to be silenced. The evil papal throne were about to commit mass murder in Japan and wanted no witnesses. A thousand to one the Japanese had nothing to do with the Indianapolis sinking.
