How Did the Ancient Romans Actually Dress?

Picture a citizen of the Roman Empire. What are they wearing? Most likely, you imagined someone wearing a white toga, sandals, and maybe some kind of laurel on their head. But most ancient Romans didn't really dress that way in their day-to-day lives. Many of us get our ideas of how Romans dressed from pop culture - movies like Spartacus or Gladiator, or TV shows like Rome. But no movie or TV show can perfectly recreate a historical era no matter how big their budget, and many don't try very hard

Well now I know what the equivalent of my life would be in the good old days. Stomping on some rich guys clothes in a vat of poor guy urine. Yumo happiness. Socks and Sandals is the name of my favorite IPA hazy bong water beer made by Humble Sea. Truly a delicacy. Resturants can't keep it in stock. also its the international symbolism for one at middle age who can't give a fig anymore.

Lol I just yelled for my son to see those big bird socks. Then the vid said socks with sandals were practical, See, Maw is stylish! He calls that, nerd gear, which isnt much of an insult since he prides himself on being just that - a nerd.

My god, I asked for the time and you gave me the whole damned clock! I just wanted to know what the romans wore everyday and you literally went into the science of Togas and dyes! I finally gave up after the purple slugs!

Since Im an Army veteran myself I would probably relate to a group you did not talk much about besides the footwear: the Roman Legionnaires: Gladius at the waist, strappy sandals, and leather pleated miniskirt. :-D

Wouldn't it be funny if Caligula met Hannibal Barca?
I say that because Caligula was played by Malcolm McDowell (1979) and Hannibal Barca was played by his nephew, Alexander Siddig (2006)

Roman women also used their clothes to show status. They wore silks and heavily embroidered and dyed fabrics to show their wealth, not just fancy hairdos and expensive jewelry.

The rich wore more expensive shoe

Imagine being on your period in that day and age. poor women. Plus it was sweltering at times in that part of the world. Heat and estrogen just doesn't mix.
