To this very day, there's an unspoken truth about English males being the ultimate gold diggers. I've travelled the world, worked abroad a lot, and every time a broke guy wanted to hook up with me, very much visibly because I had a good pay check, he was English _just how can that be a coincidence! I honestly got that from no other nationality. To this very day, too many of them just seem to suffer from this superiority complex where they think women are still interested in dating them for their British'ness; little do they seem to notice how the world has changed since the days of the British Empire, and how these days, no one with a brain is impressed, aside from your usual simpleton. This was not just a 19th century British aristocracy phenomenon, to this very day English men, specially, will make the decision on whether to date you, marry you or just shag you, by the size of your wallet. Hence why I find it so rich that males are so quick to use the term ''gold digger'' for women. The biggest gold diggers I have ever met were men.
So, as someone else has also stated before me, incidentally I'm single.

Its much worse than the question you posed. These women/girls were sold off by their parents/families for a title and their familys wealth with no regard for their free will or consideration of their happiness. These women were treated as actual property which is why some people still have issues with marriage in modern times, and honestly, I dont blame them for that. It actually made me think long & hard when my husband and I were getting married, and we had to discuss issues that people really shouldnt have to when they really love each other and are planning a life together.

What are we talking about here? These are all the same people a group of them just cross the ocean to another's people land made themselves rich and cross back over to live the aristocratic life, but People of the United States are all Europeans so they just craving the life they left in Europe. Presently the United States is 200 plus years old at that time the United States was barely 100 years old so the Europeans that made up the United States wanted to flash their new found wealth.

Sorry, but those British noblemen needed to start their own enterprises too, instead of sitting on their arses, waiting for hardworking American industrialists to ship off their daughters + American money. Whats crazy is that they would scoff at the hardworking rich mercantile families of Europe. However, they were hungry for hardworking mercantile American money. What a bunch of lazy hypocrites and lazy bums!

I like how all the women in this comments section are acting like they have a moral superiority just because of historical evidence of men also being gold diggers, yet are also saying if they hear a man utter it, it instantly means they're in the wrong even if the person is actually gold digging lmfao
both men and women can be gold diggers, dunno why you weirdos are so held up on a simple fact

yeah sell your daughter into a lifetime of unhappiness just for a title that was (without your money) worthless. Though the money (you already had) is worth something. Is there anything in history that was the opposite (a son being wedding off to hoist the family into another level of society, or was it exclusively women who were deemed extensions of material wealth?

It really does show how having alot of money does not correlate to common sense. most of the dukes were all penniless due to most of their wealth being tied up in land and houses but no real liquid incomeso really all they had was titles and for most rich americans at the turn of the century, having a noble title was the gold standard

The Vanderbilt women didn't receive nearly the amount of money as did their brothers. The sons got between 55 and 5 million dollars each. The 5 daughters receive 50 thousand and were married off for a title. To say that these marriages were draining the wealth in the US is really misleading at least with this particular family.

Well. Hard to say here. That was a time when women's rights were not valued very much, very especially inside the familjy institution. This situation was only very very slowly mitigated until today in Western societies, but it is still very grave in the East, India and the Muslim countries being the more serious cases.

My grandmother has been married 3 times, the first 2 were for love. Husband 1 was an abusive alcoholic, husband 2 wound up being our countrys first official serial killer (not USA. Husband 3 was definitely just for convenience since my familys banking and invention background was now ruined by scandal.

Her parents didnt lock Consuelo in her room on her wedding day.
Her mother alone did.
And her mother posted a footman at her bedroom door.
And ironically Consuelo was named after her mothers (Alva) best friend Consuelo Iznaga who had an affair with Alvas husband.

My mother once told me that it's just as easy to love a rich girl as a poor one. But, after I had dated two members of families that were among the wealthiest in the world, I learned that it just isn't true. They both lacked empathy for others.

RothSchild. duh!
The British title is marquess and is pronounced by them as it's spelled.
Did you imply that the Empress Elizabeth was a dollar princess? Wrong. Careless.

Yes but yes but no. America was a colony. America made an Empire for Britain. The dollar princesses probably were the progeny of wealthy investors in colonial America.

Interesting information, appalling narrative skills. Especially, chanting U-S-A, U-S-A in the middle of the story was quite revolting.
Actually, made me stop watching.

Every man is treated equal in the American Constitution. Actually it is not what they want when they made their fortune, they want the old feudalistic lifestyle.

So were the American women who married French men bilingual, or did they have a translator walking around with them until they learned each other's languages?

Men selling their daughters against their will and in some cases while they're minors. I have no doubt this practice continues but is much more under wraps.
