The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious awards a person can earn. Among its many recipients, it is an honor won by chemists, physicists, and authors who have contributed vast amounts of tireless work to shaping the world we live in, and for their efforts in paving the way for humanity to move forward. The prize is named after its benefactor, Alfred Nobel, who, among a great many other things, was noted for his revolutionary invention that oftentimes literally helps to shape our world: dynamite. Although it would eventually be used as a weapon, dynamite was commonly used to blast rock underwater or to carve away tunnels. That is, at least, until November 12, 1970, when local authorities in Florence, OR, realized Mr. Nobel's invention could be put to another use: blowing up the rotting carcass of a beached whale

Yeah this story reminds me of the time I was a little kid,
And whoever brought a sperm wales carcass up to a department store in a refrigerated truck trailer and you had to pay a few dollars in order to see that carcass,
I dont recall how much it costs to see that thing since I was a little kid and I wasnt even driving at the time,
I just remembered how big that whale was inside of that display/ truck trailer and how frosted the windows were,
Definitely very interesting,
I mean who drives around a whale carcass to show it off to everyone, or the public? ,
However it was pretty cool to see a whale far away from the deep ocean;
However, I can definitely see how it would damage a persons vehicle if that thing was blown up to smithereens,
Yikes

There is a Simpsons episode for everything weird history does. I am pretty sure.
It's quiet disturbing that we euthanize the whales now since several have washed up in the SF bay area due to #1 cargo ship strickes because we all need our precious amazon crap or costco junk. It would be nice if we put the planet and animals above our need for Ikea furniture we don't need.

Stories like this always have one person telling another person something is a bad idea or that they're doing something wrong, and the other person flat out ignoring them and saying I know what I'm doing or something like that.
This just goes to show history has a way of repeating itself in various ways.
Even in the form of an exploding whale carcass.

We were living on the coast of Northern California at the time, and this was no secret. It dominated the local news for several days, and the story of the actual explosion was both terrifying and hilarious. For months afterward, my siblings and I kept hoping to see a stranded whale on our beaches too.

This is gross but when whales would wash on shore I know that in the past in various places of the world civilians especially children would come to get a piece of the blubber bc they added sugar to it and chewed it like gum. I doubt ppl still do this lol but who knows.

This is well known to anyone who grew up in Oregon in even the surrounding decades. The news celebrated every anniversary they could. Everyone thought it was hilarious, aside from the folks who caused it and the poor guy with the flattened car. Lol

This story has also made its way into videogames with Just Cause 2. It's not a mission or anything, but there is a beached whale and your character has explosives. so, you know. of course you're going to blow up the whale!

When I first started work for an aerospace company in the early 80s they used to show us this film of the whale being blown up every year at our safety meeting (we worked with explosives. Nice to finally know the full story.

If you don't know the true story about the balloon boy you really need to look at internet historians video on it. This is perpetuating a bad rumor about a misunderstood family that the media took on a circus

I only moved here to Oregon in 1982, but still, every time I see this footage I shake my head, and ask; are we ever going to live this down?
and of course it showed up in the Simpson's, Matt is from Portland.

I lived in Waldport a very small town in oregon on the coast, most of my youth from 1997 (when i was born) to 2013 and there was many times a whale beached itself or a part of a boat was on a beach.

I was just talking to my wife about this! She did not believe me at first. I could not remember the specifics at the time all I could tell her was they blew up a dead whale on the coast!

and today we're paying $1500 of that $70, 000 for a phone/camera - so keep that in mind as that price will increase in a few years to a $10, 000 cell phone in less than 10 years

I'm from Vancouver, WA and my family and I have been to the Oregon Coast frequently, so I love hearing stories about the coast. This story is really funny after the fact.

The guy that said it was too much dynamite was obviously wrong since it left a massive section of whale intact. Next time hopefully they'll get smart and use 10x more.

Army guy - 3. 8Kg will do guys
Thorton - Who even uses metric. What the heck is a kilogram Bob?

you should talk about the outdated oregon laws! oregon was (is) a very racist state. it would be interesting to hear what info you can pull up! -from an oregonian.

Ive seen this story before. I honestly would have assumed I watched it before on Weird History but how Im finding out yall havent even covered this yet lol
reply

If it's not crazy enough to entertain the thought of climbing onto a dead beached whale, falling into the decaying corpse is damn close to terrifying
reply

the appropriate dress code for attending an exploding whale funeral service is the same dress code for the front ten rows at a Gallagher concert.
