Medical science has come a long way in the last hundred years, but that doesn't mean every medical mystery has been solved. The cause of the mysterious sleeping sickness that struck New York in the 1920s, Encephalitis lethargica, remains unsolved to this day. Originally called the sleeping sickness because the first few cases involved active people spontaneously falling asleep, it had a wide variety of symptoms and presentations

My mother's brother got sleeping sickness which is encephalitis, from the 1918 virus pandemic. He was roughly 12 years old then. he had that for the rest of his life. he died at 31. he was never able to get married and lead a normal life. he was his parents only son. I never knew my mother's parents. this sleeping sickness did not happen only in New York, like the article said. it happened to my mother's brother in Wisconsin.

I actually suffer from narcolepsy, a very similar disorder to encephalitis lethargic, and the two are actually extremely similar and studies from each have helped benefit the other. Unfortunately the true cause of both of them is still not 100% known, although researchers of narcolepsy believe they are very close to finding the true cause of the widely unknown disorder

I am from Romania and it didnt originate from Romania. Here people would simply die because because they were forced to overwork, not eat enough nor rest enough so they would die because their bodies would be damaged as well as killed by the Hungarian police who wanted to conquer us and eliminate us. Sorry to say, it did not start here

It's weird seeing a thing like this without the medical professionals uploading carefully rehearsed and choreographed Tik Tok dancing videos of themselves in full PPE in the hospital corridors. How times have changed.

Maybe this sleeping sickness was caused by something in the environment, like the lead piping from which the population drank water, or some materials that were radioactive but were in everyday things.

My grandfather had Parkinsons which used to terrify me Id get. This was before medicine was found for it, and I watched him struggle greatly. Then I found out its not genetic so some worries went away.

I like how shortsighted all these scammers are. Sorry but my life doesn't revolve around someday owning a Lamborghini. I have much bigger and way more important dreams than that lol.

There is an excellent episode of Surprisingly Brilliant (a podcast) about Oliver Sacks and how he came to talk about this illness. It is called The Helplessly Human Doctor.

The Spanish flu killed my Grandfather's first family; wife and 3 children. My Grandmother was his second wife, he, her second husband. Her first was also a victim.

That's pretty interesting! I believe my Dad was right the opposite, not getting enough sleep. Without insurance, he wasn't tested for sleep apnea.

Me, who watches weird history videos to sleep: Understandable have a great day

Sounds like something a poisonous gas would cause. Right! Like from drilling or carbon emissions? That's insane
