What It Was Like to Witness a Pirate Execution

During the Golden Age of Piracy, the growing British Empire went to great lengths to prevent lawlessness on the high seas. For centuries, pirates, privateers, buccaneers, and corsairs had taken to the water to wreak havoc against fellow seafarers, taking whatever they could find of value regardless of who suffered along the way. By the 17th and 18th centuries, however, piracy threatened European empire-building, so to curb such behavior, Britain punished the marauders and put them on display. Unlike what you may see in the best pirate movies, the life of a pirate was hard - long months, even years, on a ship amid the elements made for dirty, treacherous days and nights - but doom for a pirate was even worse

One pirate captain on arrival at Execution Dock noted there was a small orchestra playing a variety of hymns and popular drinking and seamens. songs. When the executioner began securing the pirates hands and arms, he explained that the Admiralty had authorized a horrific torture before the condemned was hanged.
Torture? What manner of torture? asked the condemned man, Ritual disembowelment?
No, replied the executioner.
The rack! exclaimed the pirate.
No, replied the executioner.
Pray tell me what manner of torture I must face, so that I might bear it well, said the pirate.
See the orchestra? The skinny guy third row, second chair from the left?
Yes. What has he to do with my fate? said a puzzled man about to meet his Maker.
He plays a ten minute oboe solo.

This is what being accountable is! We should do the same to the treasonous Republican conspirators, treasonous, corrupt trump, most of his treasonous administration and the Republicans of the congress that supported, enabled or done nothing to stop treasonous Trump's Republicans treasonous fascist coup to take over the country and the treasonous Republicans passing laws to circumvent democracy it's self!
Hang them and save the country! The more they get away with, the worse it gets!

Fun fact. Medical Cannibalism was practiced by Western Culture till the late 1800s. The executed were commonly processed into salves, balms and tinctures. Even their bones were boiled down to extract the Life Force that was believed to reside there. At beheadings people would collect the blood to drink as a cure-all.
And the more tortured and horribly a person was kilked the more it was believed that the Life Force extracted was of higher potency.

public executions today would be huge events. tens of thousands of people would show up, especially in the beginning.
when the guillotine was still being used regularly in france in the 1930s, enormous crowds would turn out.
it isn't too often that you get to watch someone die. i wonder how many people ended up regretting seeing that. i mean. imagine watching a head get lopped off. that'll give you nightmares for life.

first of all, i hate politics -- but i always thought pirates were mainly business men of the old days. Also, i despise the death penalty for any one big or small any race! It does not help the people dead or alive! I believe in peace and love, mercy, compassion for all the world, yes i am old hippy from the past and i will be for the rest of my life and beyond -- yahoo!

i want you to put the rumour to sleep that pirate decaprio took over control of the ship commonly known as the titanic and deliberately crashed it into an ice berg because they wouldn't give him ice cream as a staple breakfast item. history suggests that this pissed him off so much that he is quoted as shouting his last words at the helm ice cream or ice berg mfs

Heave to & hoist the main sail, me bucko. Shake a leg. Act lively, now. For king & country. Lay aft to the starboard quarterdeck. Whistle up a sailin' tune on yer squeeze box. Steady as she goes. Haze grey & under way. Tis a sailor's life for me. Splash that water. I joined the navy to see the world, & what did I see? I saw the sea. 100% of all water is wet.

Port Royal is in Jamaica (unless there was also one in the Bahamas. It was known as the wickedest city in the world, because of it being filled with pirates. They drank gambled and lived a life of debauchery. A terrible earthquake destroyed the city. Its now a tourist attraction whereby you can see the sunken city from glass bottom boats.

I appreciate how so many civilians even back then comprehended the inhumanity of the death sentence for property crime that they went through all these measures in order to try and ease the suffering, even if that meant attempting to make them die faster, all in the face of those who'd condemned them to death in the first place.

Captain Kidd was innocent. He was accused of murder by a liar after returning to the American colonies and went back to England because he wanted to vindicate himself. He made the mistake of believing he would actually get justice from the corrupt court.

Mary & Anne werent just allowed to live. They pled their bellies, as it was called. Mary later died in prison along with her baby, whereas Anne was eventually freed to do her father's connections. She went on to remarry and have several more kids.

Vile and dissolute creatures, the lot of them. I intend to see to it that any man who sails under a pirate flag or wears a pirate brand gets what he deserves. A short drop and a sudden stop.

A human soul, consciousness, and personality is liquidated from this world and people back then found it entertaining its crazy but not surprising because millions of people still think the same way now

Pretty much what I expected, high risk for riches, and if you're caught, it's all over for you. unless you could avoid capture and or had a letter of marque or reprisal for privateering.

I cant begin to imagine what it must feel like to paraded for hours knowing that you were going to be hanged at the end. How on earth did they not just completely freak out!

Pirates were actually treated very well!
They worked for their governments and stole money and jewels.
Many became politicians and leaders in their communities.

Funny how people nowadays (2022) think public humiliation is a lot of fun to witness via the media, social media and the like so we havent changed much over the centuries.
