I was 17 and went with the older brother of a friend. He wasn't very adventurous but on Saturday I told him, I'm going right to the very front, after being stuck way in the back using my binoculars. I had a great plan that worked. There was a distinct edge of the crowd on the right side. I went there, headed down to the stage to the front, and just went right across to the very front and center. It was between acts. Just as I settled at the very front and center, Santana was introduced. They had a mixture of percussion, guitar, bass, and organ, a combination, I'd never heard before. I loved it. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. When you're that close, the music vibrates through your body. We left Sunday morning, not having anything to eat or drink since Friday. I only brought a sandwich and a soda when I left figuring I could buy food. There was no food for sell at the main site. What I saw on this film was an adjacent area, I never got wind of. All in all, the music was great, the weather sucked at night, and rightfully so, it was declared a disaster area. BUT, it really was a peaceful event. I never saw one altercation. I was suprised when I got home, it was on the national news, and saw Walter Cronkite of CBS talking about it.

I was a professional musician in Hollywood in the 60's and 70's. I recorded in many of the great Hollywood studios. I always played with the Wrecking Crew though I wasn't a member. I started playing in 1958 and I'm retired now. My dream in life was to be a professional musician. For me Woodstock left a bad taste in my mouth. Not due of the performers but due to the attendees. Altimont capped it off for me. I didn't like the direction the audience was going so I left the music business. Not being critical here but just being true to myself. I never stopped stopped playing though!

Part of me wishes I could have been there, I would have made the best of the crazy circumstances but listening to archival releases and bootlegs and seeing footage of the bands that played the original Woodstock in their prime a large part of me thinks I'd rather see shows from the bands that played at indoor venues or at least in better weather. I have heard stories that close to the time of Woodstock The Who and The Band played shows to some of their smallest peak era audiences and then got to contrast that with playing the gigantic audience of Woodstock '69.

The 2 acts I would've liked to have seen are 2 (of many) who were cut from the film.
Janis Joplin, who wanted her performance cut because she said it was too dark.
(it's out there on bootleg DVD & if you can find it, it's truly haunting, especially considering she was dead 14 months later)
And Bert Sommer, probably the best musician at Woodstock, that unless you're old like me, you probably never heard of.

Funny that the same shit happened at Woodstock 69, 94, and 99 - the different audiences just reacted in different ways. In 69 peace and love was hip so there was very little violence in response to the festivals mismanagment but 94 and then especially 99 got way out of control because the culture had shifted. Kids didnt want to put up with the same things and reacted to it much differently, the times changed

I could have went, I was 15 at the time and my parents would never give me permission, so if I would have gone I would have been in big trouble, plus I really didnt believe that all those big name acts would be playing at the same place for the same event.
After seeing the movie, I dont think I would have enjoyed being there!
Watching the movie, and having the album was good enough for me!

Richie claims he played for 2 or 3 hours and kept leaving the stage yet, I have recordings of the entire concert and it sound to me like he walked off at all until the end of Motherless Child, his last song! IF he played for 2 or 3 hours, how was it he started at just after 5: 00 and Sweetwater started just after 6: 00?

Jimi hendrix rendition of the star spangled banner led me to do a rendition of my countrys Der er et yndigt land.
Dive bomb and everything.
But I must say this festival was more peacefull than what followed with the anniversary.
But I must admit the music is way greater than todays commercial crap.

The majority of the crowd just dont sit down at festivals or concerts anymore. That goes to show how chilled the crowd was and thats probably why this event wasnt a disaster. Unfortunately Michael Lang just didnt seem to learn any lessons.

I went to a festival in the Pocono mountains in Pa. a few years after Woodstock. Similar issues. I think 50, 000 tickets were sold but 400, 000 showed up. Roads jammed, food ran out, thunderstorm at night. It was a great time though

The New York police screwed up Woodstock. The police were suppose to direct crowds into parking areas that were rented by promoters but the cops never showed up. Thus they had the long traffic jams. It wasn't CSN it was CSNY.

Missing Woodstock is one of my greatest regrets. I went to Monterey Pop, but didn't hear about Woodstock until it was over. If i ever get my hands on a time machine, i'll go back to hear Janis sing again and go to Woodstock.

Jimi hendrix messed up, he should have played when the promoters whated him to play. All the people left and it was 9am. Who would want to listen to jimi at 9am. Big disappointed for Jim and promoters I read.

If this was the Boomer gen, then what happened to them? Why are a lot of them so crazy now? Its like, I see their peaceful youth, but for some reason, it all went south.

I played the reunion in 2001. It got alot of coverage and thought it would get alot of attention.
Unfortunately, a few weeks later, 911 happened.
All was forgotten.

Another band invited (and who even appear on the original concert poster) was The Moody Blues. They turned it down because they had a gig in Paris that same weekend

I was originally told that Hendrix when on Monday because of racist. The highest paid act who demanded to go on last, and got it. Sounds like the racism of 2020!

Love the nudity - it has an effect on us when we can be natural and vulnerable. Naturists today carry on this innocent 'social nudity' when possible and comfortable.

If the performers could have perceived the historical nature of the event, they would have paid to be there, instead of worrying about being paid!

No mention of the logistics of human waste. How many outhouses? Where were they located? How did the promoters deal with all the accumulated waste at the end?
