What Life On A Native American Reservation Is Really Like

In 1851, the US government passed the Indian Appropriations Act, creating reservation lands for Native Americans. For decades prior, the US government had forcefully moved and abused Native American tribes, most notably through the Indian Removal Act and subsequent Trail of Tears under President Andrew Jackson. In placing them on reservations, the US government often forced Native Americans to live on subpar lands under harsh conditions. Reservation rules were also oppressive and unfamiliar. By 1887, the government took further action with the Dawes Act. President Grover Cleveland signed the act, which aimed to assimilate Native Americans into white culture and improve their lives. It did the opposite. By taking more land away from Native Americans, splitting up land they already held, depriving them of productive and profitable farmland, and sending them into abject poverty, the US government only made matters worse

We constantly hear about how oppressed are people living in one of the most free and prosperous countries on earth. blacks, gays, now poor transgenders not able to use women's shower rooms. But no one mentions those that are truly oppressed and left behind after having their entire way of life destroyed. They literary survived the biggest genocide in the world's history and I have nothing but mad respect for them, especially that they don't make a big deal out of themselves even though they could. I wish Natives had more recognition in the US and some help with the violent crimes that affect their most vulnerable members.

They definitely got a bad deal but if they are so poor why not do something about it? This country will give you money to go to school. Get an education and make a better life for yourself. If an immigrant can come to this country with nothing and make it so can they. I've seen single mothers with 3 kids going to night school to make a better life for her family. If you work hard you can do anything in this country.

Reservations were started when the 5 civilized tribes sold their lands in the South. The tribe along with tribal own black slaves, Freedman, moved to what is now Oklahoma. Since then, Reservations became US federal managed territories for indigenous peoples. Each are controlled by tribal census numbers to track its population for food distributions and health statistics are used in National surveys.

If you say there are federal protective services for all people then woman should be protected to same level as white American woman other wise elected people should resign and more responsible people should be put in place thank you to all surviving natives you are all very beautiful people thank you for sharing your culture with us

This is so heartbreaking, Ronald Reagan said it best-
The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.
I dont know why Native Americans would choose live on a reservation, Federal government does not care one bit about the people theyve placed there.

Great to hear about the courage and perseverence of the Indian nations to preserve their language, their culture, their beliefs. Terrible to hear from the poor conditions on the reservations. Horrific to hear about the consequences of white-mans laws. It is ironic to call the USA the land of the free.

Interesting,
Wow! Finally, a video that calls Native Americans-Native Americans and NOT Indian
Also, Native Americans lost their ability to hunt and run constantly.
Plus the government provided them with can food for them to eat. Causing them a health problems purposely.

One thing that must be mentioned here is the institutionalized corruption of the political leaders of the various tribes

Many thousands of those people could better themselves if they really wanted to. But it is so much easier just to live on handouts from others and stay on welfare all their lives. Thankfully, not all of them are this lazy.

These fine people look a lot like Mexicans. If only the government didn't have policies keeping Mexican and Central Americans from claiming who they genetically are, then all Natives can enact some real power.

Now a days people like conservatives don't care about us and our needs, we have sacred lands. And now they want to take even more away from us, for profit. Just look at standing rock as an example.

Hardly any pictures of what they actually look like in 2022, though. I wanted to see what it's like to visit one of the reservations in real life SINCE THAT'S WHAT THE TITLE SAYS.
reply

what losers. they live in such a mess. garbage, dirt, stench and poverty. but to study and work is not a grace. it's better to wait for the state to give you something.
reply

How did the Native American become so white looking now? Honest question. Can anyone tell me? What happened to all of the dark skin one on the old photos that you showed?
reply

Native American people are the most precious race for whole American continent. bcoz they are the only people who were connected to ancient mayan history.
reply

I know, right. I grew up poor, on the south side of Chicago. Schools were pretty good. I am shocked, embarrassed, etc, that I knew nothing of this!
