The Real Five Points, The Neighborhood That Inspired 'Gangs of New York'

Martin Scorsese's period epic Gangs of New York took up residence in the chaos-ridden New York City neighborhoods of the mid-1800s, populated by eccentric characters and vicious acts of aggression. Its depiction wasn't entirely accurate, but it was based on a very real neighborhood and the very real misery it experienced. Five Points, a major intersection in lower Manhattan, was home to a host of impoverished immigrants seeking a better future for their families. That future wasn't easy to come by; newcomers mostly encountered hostility and distrust, which often boiled over into conflict. J.: 8: 06 second row middle. Daniel Day Lewis was fantastic in that movie!
I'm so happy I wasn't around back then.
There's NO WAY I'd survive, I don't believe I'm as Strong as people were back then.
Remember those immigrants didn't get Any Free help from the taxpayers as they do now, and the were discriminated against so much they couldn't even get jobs because Nobody wanted to hire Irish men!
They were allowed to fight for The Union Army though, because I have ancestors that fought in the Civil War that were Irish.

Interesting coincidence in the timing of this upload, as I just finished reading Herbert Asbury's book which Scorsese used as a source of inspiration for his film. It was a great read.

Tapdancing - or clogdance, stepdance, buckdance etc. - are found in every European country in some form. Sorry, diverse persons, but peanut butter is still on you.

Way to remind me at 4: 43 of one of Scorsese's not so vulgar offenses with his line, said by Bill 'the Butcher '; Look at that. A jig doing a jig. Hahaha

Five Points was mentioned at least as early as The Sting in the 1970s, so I wouldn't say it was made famous by a more recent movie.

Immigrants brought filth, crime, disease and vice. Can t imagine why the natives didn t appreciate the cultural enrichment.
