Why King James I Was Obsessed With Burning Witches

Why King James I Was Obsessed With Burning Witches

The religious violence of the Protestant Reformation and legacy of political strife between Queen Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots loomed over the reign of King James I. Both issues influenced him to keep a firm hold on the political, but fear the supernatural. The only son of Mary, Queen of Scots and Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, James was born in 1566 during an ongoing conflict between Scotland and England. When he was one year old, he ascended the Scottish throne as King James VI - after his mother abdicated her position - and was crowned King James I of England after the passing of his cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, in 1603. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.
- Song of the Witches in the play Macbeth

Eating a Witchwich. while watching this Weird History video!
I ate that while watching the movie Season of the Witch! (by Geoge Romero)
Inspired by the Weird History videos about Halloween. also doing a Witch theme for Halloween this year!
The Witchwich is two fried chicken eggs (spread so the eggs is wider than the bread) topped with tiger sauce grape jelly all inbetween two slices of Sara Lee wheat toast

My ancestor was the royal apothecary to Queen Anne, King James’s wife. They saw witches all the time because they were high all the time on Dr. Dulaney’s aka Gideon Du Lune little pills - no doubt mercury was the main ingredient.

You’ve got that backwards, his father died, not in an explosion since he was found outside the home strangled then his mother was ousted after marrying Bothwell, the man accused of killing her husband, shortly after Darnley’s death.

Nice video, nice research, Just one small thing - Berwick is pronounced Ber-(as in berry)-ick. That goes for all the places i know with that word in their name, eg. North Berwick, Berwick-on-Tweed etc. Keep up the good work.

Do not use this video as historical fact regarding James VI / I, or his mother, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. It gets the broad strokes correct, but the moment you begin to look deeper, this video falls apart.

Well, if we learned anything from Monty Python it's that witches weigh the same as ducks which mean they float and must be made of wood.
Clearly, King James I was just trying to keep his people warm. /s

This narrator os toreable to listen too but lacks a certain range of emotions when making puns and such. Soory WHC, but this is almost as boring as my middle school history teacher was.

It's all real!
Not the witch trials. Those were bogus. The witches were not
real.
But there are real witches but these people were innocent.

It didn't hurt the royal coffers that any property of witches went to the King after he had them burned alive. He was more monster than unifier.
