1998 may have been the most '90s' year of the 90s! With defining moments like the breaking of the Monica Lewinsky scandal and President Bill Clinton’s subsequent impeachment; Titanic became the first film to hit a billion dollars at the box office and nearly swept the Oscars; and the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra was released, providing low-hanging joke fodder for years to come. TV was bringing the 90s energy too, with a slew of new shows about teenage angst, hot-button issues, and counting down the best music videos.

1998 was the best year of my life. I had gotten full custody of my sons in 996 and that caused me to have to move in with my parents. My parents were great people. Yet my father’s least favorite son had just interrupted his retirement. So as a result. The man I loved the most and had always been my hero started to treat me like crap. We were on the verge of getting into fist fights almost weekly. Fast forward 12 months. In January of 1998 I met my second wife and she and I were madly in love. From January of 98 until November of 98. She made me feel complete again. On Christmas Day 1998 I asked her to marry me and she said yes. The following March we moved into a bit of a run down house. Yet it was very livable and I was 29, a fairly decent father. Namely because I started to calm down and listen to my father and pick up what he was trying to tell me that as a father. Do better! I was much more confident as a man and for really the first time in my life really understood what it meant to be a father and a man. So I’m also a decent carpenter and a good mechanic. So my new wife and I started to fix er up. We made it to the kitchen around the time she found the lump. Breast cancer ate her to the bone and my angel died on March First of 2000. Yeah 2000-2001 really sucked for me. Then I met my wife I’m married to now. I love her. She’s a great woman. Yet my heart truly still belongs to my angel. I just can’t wait to see her again.

During the early days of TRL was also the early days of the internet, where you could vote/upvote music videos online and see them on the TV. With the higher ranking videos you would get to see most or all of the videos. This was pre-YT, so the only way you would see a music video is if it was played on MTV, and at the point of TRL, there were no other shows showing music videos.
My brother, who at the time was 14-15 and was in a computer programming class, made a script that would flood TRL with thousands of his votes per day. I got to see Powerman5000's when worlds collide, which by all rights is not a pop band and would not be the public's favorite, reach #1. My brother got to see the music video, and PM5K got a huge boost to sales. Obviously you can't easily cheat the system like this anymore. but there was a time.

Also June 28th at the Igloo in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania saw the now infamous Hell in the Cell’ match on PPV TV with The Undertaker and Mankind. It was one of the most controversial matches of its time and is still regarded as one of the best matches WWE has ever had.
Features Undertaker tossing Mankind off the cage into a table, through the cage hitting his head on a metal chair and lastly being body slammed onto thumbtacks.
It was the last time WWE ever allowed such a performance in the ring and was a precursor push towards a more PG atmosphere in later years.

When it comes to Wide World of Sports, that name would still be used by ABC Sports for coverage of basically anything that wasn't MNF, the NBA, the NHL or NCAA Football/Basketball until 2006 when ABC Sports was fully integrated into ESPN. The last ABC Sports telecast was the title game for that year's Little League World Series. Since 2007, any sport that has been broadcast on ABC has been given the ESPN on ABC label which makes it seem like ABC is just a place for ESPN to put sports on broadcast TV.

Frank Sinatra died the night of the Seinfeld finale and supposedly the ambulance got him to the hospital quickly after his heart attack due to all the people who stayed in to watch Seinfeld.
I was 14 and on vacation with my family in Las Vegas. Sadly I couldn’t celebrate The Chairman of the Board as all I was allowed to do for entertainment was pump quarters into arcade games or see family friendly shows like Siegfried & Roy or Donnie & Marie

You forgot the premiere of Rock N Roll Jeopardy on VH1 as well as their Top 100 list of Greatest Artists of Rock N Roll that was hosted by Kevin Bacon. I have long hoped to find a copy of the show, which I used to have. Both shows, more or less, lost to the annals of TV history - but Rock N Roll Jeopardy is notable for having Jeff Probst as host before he left for Survivor.

I don't like Will & Grace. It's too loud.
I was 12 in 1998, and of those shows, I watched The Powerpuff Girls, which is one of Cartoon Network's best, and Pokemon, which I would have to become a closet fan of since my parents said I was too old for it. I wouldn't watch That '70s Show until about 2013, and Cowboy Bebop 10 years later.

Another great video. Awesome. I've been waiting so long for this one, was hoping to see cowboy bebop, was literally the only part I hoped would be in it. But I was very on the fence on weather it would make the cut. And there it is, in all of it's glory! Best thing to ever happen

Appreciate the info, man! Video was chill, and the tips did the trick, When I saw Mario Volpstein’s updated version, a rock-hard jolt popped off, got me into a groove I hadn’t hit in years, Like my younger self was back, pumped and ready to move, definitely goolging him for more

When Pokemon debuted, I was 19 years old and recovering from mono. My sleep schedule was ALL messed up, and I got hooked on Pokemon because it aired early in the mornings. Rescued a kitten not long afterward and named her. Pikachu. Of course.

I can't remember what I did last week but I can remember what I was doing during 98% of these clips. It may be nostalgia but life truly was better back then. Might have something to do with the heart attack and stroke I've had since then though.

I’m 33 turning 34 this year and 98 was one of the best years in my life. So much stuff happened then that’s still a stable in my life today. Thank you God for allowing me to be at age to experience life.

I remember when TRL was just Carson Daly in basically a dark basement like room counting down music videos on MTV before all the celebrities when on there. The best new show that I watched was Felicity.

the same voice as dana scully. pretty sure if they knew they'd kept her.

The Attitude Era of WWF was at its peak, and cartoons were really taking off both on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. I actually like the Powerpuff Girls. Cute, funny, and action packed show.
