Understanding Orthodox Civilization.

Understanding Orthodox Civilization. Spencer: 12: 41 I was raised as a Christian and later left when I grew up. Later on out of interest I spent a few months studying and annotating scripture unique to the faith I was raised in as well as some background to it. I have to say that the second interpretation presented as the Orthodox one seems much more apparent to me, and it surprises me sometimes to talk to my Christian friends and learn they hold the first view and reject the second. Plenty of times in scripture, Christians are called upon to endure their suffering and take no care for their own sake, giving all to God, for their just reward will be in heaven. You're almost meant to take an oath of poverty. It seems that the people identifying themselves as Christian around me believe that one can be as rich or as poor, caring for their own as much as they can, and that what unites them ultimately is whether they believe or not. I suppose that allows for a variety of social classes and strata and a culture more prone to run away from suffering. Without being an expert, I can't really say which is the correct interpretation, I just find the second one here to be more compelling from a scriptural standpoint.

Western Europe developed more because it was safer from invasions and because the concept of a nation state could develop (because both the model of the empire and that of the city state failed there. It was not due to Catholicism being more freedom-proned by itself than Orthodoxy. The way western and eastern Christianity developed was a result of political and economical factors, not a trigger of it.
A nation state is a good mixture between an empire, which offers security but discourages freedom and a trading middle class and a city state, which offers the latter but not the first. And in the case of England geography helped a lot because it was an island not part of the continent. And the US developed the way it did also because it had just two, non-expansionist neighbors and not one world war on its territory.

You as a historian would have to know that the Albanians came to the Balkans after the 10th century as a payed army. A shitty one at that, since their general died and they couldn't get back home, so they just ended up living there.
I'm talking about this because you are talking about Orthodox history and the Balkans and you are inserting people that didn't have anything to do with it. Didn't live there and therefore are not the part of that history.
This makes me question the validity of any and all of your videos. I caught this because I am of the region and my family was for centuries, but a video on China or India or anywhere else that I'm not familiar with, you could be telling me fantails and I'd have to check 30-40 minute videos. They lose their point.

Well, considering that a) the ancient Greek religion was periodically persecuted to the extreme (say, Theodosius) and, b) to stamp out any remnants of it (as well as anything differentiating a main part of the empire's population at its core from the rest and from their Roman identity) they made the word Greek synonymous with pagan and therefore to call oneself Greek was to identify as a pagan, it's no mystery why the ancient Greek civilization was marginalized until the very late years of the Byzantine Empire.
Note: We're not talking about identity as that of a a modern nation-state since that (either) did not exist.

As an eastern european. man this video seriously makes no sense. You didnt read enough and got some really weird ideas about eastern europe that I see you repeat in some other videos.
Please educate yourself on eastern european history.
Also, just look at Romania. The only romance country in the region. That is because of historic differences and resistance since the romans left in 200 - 400 AD. You really think it is all that simple?
Also, Romania is NOT in the balkans. Please educate yourself again on where the balkan peninsula ends and starts.

The Byzantines did NOT do the angels on the pin argument. That was in the West
And no the West only was interested in ancient Greek philosophy after the fall of Byzantium and the begging of Renaissances
So many wrong things here in this video
And all the ancient Greek texts, including Homer, were celebrated and read by the Byzantines and especially by the monks! Thats how these texts made it to the West because the West was going through the book burning dark ages

Dude the reason communism's record holds up in the world is because there weren't a bunch of pesky revolutionaries to meddle with the establishment of a global hegemony by a classic example of a military/political/slaveowning state setup based out of western europe and the east coast of the US. Communism has been getting played for barbarians by our byzantine corporate overlords and you're out here completely ignoring the impact of social reform.

Barely civilised Balkans peninsula.
That peninsula had the imperial mint, and more than a few highly developed cities.
Btw the Balkan peninsula is the longest settled and longest cultivated part of the European continent.
Don't let your current worldview affect the view of some region in the History, especially if the view has some current biases.

Greeks still identify themselves as Romans, even if we do not realize it: Romios is a popular term for Greek, Roumeli is a popular name for southern mainland Greece, while the Greeks in Istanbul are still called Rum (and not Yunan. Greek was considered a bad name connected to the old religion in the Orthodox civilization

I think you could've covered the Bulgarians more as they were quite influential at the time, at their golden age being the first Slavic cultural hub and being responsible for spreading Orthodoxy to a lot of Slavs and the Cyrillic Alphabet, the successes of leaders like Boris I and Simeon The Great shouldn't really be ignored
