Three Countries That Should've been Rich Iceman9009: As many historians, especially amateur western historians like yourself, tend to exhibit, your Asian history is sorely lacking. You might think that it's up to par but I tend to notice mistakes in your knowledge of Asian culture and history in most of your videos. The most glaring example was when you pronounced Malay as 'May-lay' instead of 'Muh-lay'.
As other comments point out, you either were wrong about Malaysian history or misinterpreted information about Malaysian history. Malaysia HAD a communist rebellion but it was squashed and its government is not very Communist-influenced like you suggest. Singapore was also already part of Malaysia when they gained independence from the British but were expelled from the Malaysian federation due to fears about their high Chinese populace and how it might outnumber the Malay population. You also claim that the Malaysians clamped down on the Chinese populace but I think a notable fact that you excluded is that this was largely due to the May 13 race riots in 1969 that saw Chinese and Malay racial riots that killed hundreds of people due to the results of a recent election giving the Chinese representation in parliament their biggest gains yet. The Malaysian government went through a period of emergency and reorganized their system to benefit the Malay population as they were seen as the poorer class. This would explain your 'clamp' on Chinese players in the Malaysian economy you mentioned. You also fail to mention the significant South Asian (Indian/Sri Lankan) population that lived in Malaysia (at the time around 10% of the populace) but to be fair to you they played less of a role in Malaysia's current situation.
Not hating on you or anything, I just think everyone's subject to criticism, and I think you especially know that echo chambers praising you are not very healthy. I generally enjoy your videos BTW. I bet a few fans would get ticked off at me if they happen across this comment but this isn't for them. Hope you read this!

For Malaysia, I think in your timeline, you're being too optimistic. If you're referencing Singapore as it is in the world right now, to what could have been if LKY lead Malaysia as a whole, the trajectory of the country would be vastly different.
Singapore made decisions that they made due to scarcity. Lack of space, lack of natural resources, etc etc. But if they had all of that, I believe at most they would achieve Taiwan's level in GDP. But realistically, it would've been lower because of the multicultural aspect of the country which would pose its own setbacks compared to Taiwan with a homogenous society.
A lot of people seem to think Singapore's success is a 'common' thing that any new country could achieve, but reality says otherwise. Singapore is an achievement accomplished through a lot of sacrifices. Last year there was a proposal made to increase the requirement for companies to hire locals up from 30%, but the minister said, due to the intricacies of the Singapore economy, it's not a viable option for the country. What your friend said is accurate, 'Disneyland with martial law'. People are not giving enough credit towards Singapore's achievements and they think that just about anyone could replicate it.
Don't get me wrong, I do believe that good governance and smart decision-making is INTEGRAL to a nation's prosperity. but it won't make another Singapore.

Leftist historians have launched a purposeful propaganda campaign And there's the proof anyone needs that this guy is just another alt-right nutter. To claim that without offering any proof is just baseless conservative conspiracy peddling. And most of what you said after (and plenty before) that was just opinion or assumption or claims of a spurious link without any kind of critical thinking about these ideas.
I can't say I was surprised though given your previous output or that you failed to note any foreign intervention in any of these countries or any actual specific reasons for anything. Just vaguely skipping over and sometimes seemingly misunderstanding or attributing far too much influence to, some contributing factors, that are all in pretty much every polity anyway.
Your understanding of history has only slightly more depth than Prager's nonsense which might be why you seem so confused by the work of historians.
To those watching. While many of the things he says are correct, he often leaves out key historical facts, interpretations and evidence in order to spin this very simplistic and conservative, seemingly mainstream media derived, narrative about the world. Anybody like this so obviously uninterested in investigating alternative ideas should not be taken seriously or as knowledgeable about history and be seen more as a propagandist.

Imagine having oil on the land AND in the sea and being 6 times poorer than the neighbor with no land, no resources, heck, Singapore doesn't even have water for god's sake.
Malaysia is an absolute failure state and corrupted to the core, and it's bound to be race driven because of how divided the people are, and how the politicians keep stirring shit to make people even more divided than ever.
Fun fact, bumiputera, the term people use to address the Malay locals, means the prince of the land, and everyone that's not Malay locals are STILL being called pendatang (means visitor, people who came from outside) to this very day, perfect recipe for an apartheid state, and don't get me started on how the government suppress non-bumi businesses.
All these are even more complimented by the if you don't like here then leave mindset of the privileged population, since they're the majority.
Malaysia is an apartheid state, there's no denying, and there's no cure. The country is being ran by corrupted people who capitalize on the demographic divide and it's only getting worse by the day.

I disagree that Malaysia should have been rich, or at least been included in this video. The country you should consider is Thailand, instead of Malaysia. I probably believe Malaysia should have been rich but Thailand was supposed to be richer way earlier than Malaysia.
And actually, when you talk about why Malaysia should have been richer, the main thing you should include is the strategic location, natural resources and geographical condition and safety. That 3 things can make every country become a billionaire regardless of what race runs the country. But your main focus is too much comparing why Malaysia doesn't follow how Singapore become rich. It is 2 completely different countries. If Malaysia follows the same path as Singapore, it means Malaysia will run out of oil 20 years ago. Slow pace is fine because Europe becomes successful with that indicator, but Malaysia messed it up because of poor management and the respect the elder' attitude.

I am Malaysian. 54 years old. I dont like our corruption and sometimes tense racial politics. But I am proud of Malaysia instead of putting her down like most of you who have not lived through the Communist Insurgency, racial riots, Bucket system sewage, slums, poverty Dangerous Mini Buses and rudimentary medical health system. Ive seen Malaysian jungles and plantations turning into housing estates, commercial centres and industrial estates. I have witnessed sons and daughters of padi farmers, tin miners, and rubber tappers become doctors, factory technicians, lawyers and corporate figures. I have seen people who lived in wooden shacks moved into brick houses with 5 cars per house. . Next time you naysayers lament of how things bad are in Malaysia spare a thought for my generation and the generations before me who helped Malaysia progressed to where she is today. Appreciate that we have done our best to improve our lives and You all.

Malaysian here and I can say that you are correct. The suppression of the South East Asian Chinese economic and work culture, which was labeled as the Jews of the East and the destruction of race base meritocracy, with other problems such as a history of rejection to economic freedom and foreign investment, and the suppression of Penang Island which had the potential to become a third Hong Kong (with second being Singapore, and rampant corruption and lobbying within politicians are only a few major problems which deterred this country away from potential hyper economic success and development.

Lee kuan yew was not a Chinese nationalist and to theorise him being the leader of an ethnostate is wrong. This a flawed misconception and the idea that there couldve been an ethnic civil war is ludicrous. The idea of the malayan insurgency being an ethnic issue between the Chinese and Malays were largely propaganda and even prominent figures like Lee kuan yew criticised the Malayan Communist Party. Lee Kuan Yew although has a racist past will never wouldve dreamed something like this.

Tbh, it was a hella big oof to let singapore gain independence and build that bridge whose height somehow cannot let ships cross. I know that it is due to pressure from the government but the real thing is due to the Malays cause they are scared that the Chinese might take over their ruling state. Aaaaand no arguments please I'm not wanting to start any kind of ww3.
