a joke only goes too far when it's tasteless about the subject AND, most critically, it's not funny.
the beauty of comedy is the beauty of any artform built around creating new combinations of words expressing ideas: it's virtually limitless and there can never be a definite standard about what's acceptable and what's not because we haven't _heard_ everything and we never can.
just when we think we've heard it all before and there can NEVER be a funny joke about ______, along CAN come a joke about that very thing that's _so_ well-crafted and unique that it gets us to laugh DESPITE our rock-solid opinions on the matter.
that's comedy's greatest asset: it's a reflex, not a taste. we can and DO laugh in _spite_ of ourselves. we do it all the time. truly Great Comedy throws our own tastes right in our own faces and makes us temporarily forget what we think we like or don't like.
comedy and writing is the art of the infinite! you can't say _anything_ for certain about anything because there's no limit on what someone COULD write. it just takes time, talent and fortune - anything can be made funny with just the right words. absolutely anything.
no, I don't have those words. but somebody COULD. that's the whole point. peace and be well to everyone out there

The thing I miss in stand up comedy is how they would say something to try and make you feel uncomfortable then hit with a joke right after and it causes you to laugh even harder than you would have because of the discomfort
now somehow jokes are taken seriously at face value to the point where you have to say a disclaimer after every one of them just about so just how can you shake someone out of their comfort zone and hit them with an even better one
Besides being bill bur

please don’t call a heckler narcissistic. it’s true but so unfunny. instead, effortlessly bury them with comeback like joan rivers. she would lie about stuff in the moment and gut punch those hecklers so hard.
one guy got offended at a joke about disabled people and she said her son was in a wheelchair even tho it was a downright lie, but the room laughed uncontrollably at the fact that she shut down the heckler

This is by no means a dig at Matteo, but watching someone explain stand up comedy is like watching someone try to explain a joke or even just what is funny. Laughter and humor are so ingrained in us as a species I feel like it's not something that can be explained and learned, it's just understood. Unless this video is to explain comedy to aliens

Lmaooo at the all-caps part.
I really enjoyed this. One of my best friends did standup for about 20 years in Cali and moved back here. I don't do standup too shy and too much anxiety but we're definitely joined at the funny bone. I enjoy making people laugh (or at least smile) It makes me happy.

Why can't they just roll the two drink minimum into the price of the ticket Like instead of paying $20 a ticket with a 2-drink minimum just charge $40 and give me a $20 bar tab included The forcing you to order drinks is why it feels like a scam.

Tried to break into stand-up for two years. Mostly never got past open mike (had a brief stint co-opening for Joel Hodgson before he went on to create MST3000. Got great respect for anyone that actually succeeds at it.

Most people don’t know they already did in fact remake the craft just like the crow last year. And they both are trash disrespectful movies that should have never been made and insult the originals. Rest in peace Brandon Lee!

Why is Matteo Lane being the spokesperson for Comedy Support. He's not a comedian - he's that famous actor playing Zach's boyfriend Wyatt in ABC's hit show Abbott Elementary! He should be doing Acting Support!

I am mostly impressed with those long 40min specials, I think holding any presentation even with a powerpoint can be difficult. But listening to a comedian with no aid for such a long time is impressive.

I love the call out for Joan Rivers. She was absolutely phenomenal. I love that this was Matteo's inspiration. Thanks for the video! Bring Matteo back to rate films or tv shows with comics or something. Thanks!

I admit, I didn't even listen to the answer to the all-caps question the first time around, because i was focusing my short attention span on thinking I hope he responds in caps too over and over
reply

I am so grateful for you and your creativity and openness! Don’t ever think you are less important! Please I don’t need attention but you have literally kept me alive and I’m grateful.

Dude Matteo’s on wired! This is awesome! He is literally my favorite comedian. It’s so true because he does laugh when some people can’t stop laughing
I love you, Matteo!

I haven't watched the video yet. I am commenting before that based on the thumbnail. Comedy is art, and art is subjective. There is no one greatest stand up comedian of all time.
reply

i love the fact that he’s still performing while answering questions about this. i see this guy on social media all the time, he’s so funny and i appreciate this insight
reply

I love how even the simplest forms of entertainment like stand up comedy is also a complex art form and process. And how he explains it is super interesting.

Most people don't realized the magic of Stand-up and how hard it is.
1 person 1 mic, try to make the entired crowd laugh, it takes A LOT of time and effort.

reply

Lowkey needed to hear that bombing response. I’m not a comedian, but the language learning analogy he used was very helpful, I’m trying to learn more languages.
