Bloody hell. Amazing work. I am loving the fact that, recently, I keep coming across these unbelievable gems, these shorts, whose parts simply cannot equate the sum of the delivery. An unexpected delight, which if I'm honest, deserve a few pages of A4, not a mere few hundred characters, in between the Yey. First post. The production values on this are mental. Visually stunning. Cinematography, stunning. Dialogue, fitting and simply beautifully written and excellently delivered. Sound/music - insane. Editing - amazing.
One of the finest shorts I've ever watched. So professional, so funny, so beautifully put together. Clearly put together by a (highly talented) bunch of people that have passion and expertise.
Only viewed by 34k peeps. That really saddens me.
You deserve a far, far wider audience.

It's a thought experiment by a geek, who is having an existential crisis. His narration of this experiment is, not surprisingly, dispassionate and unhurried, and it belies the fright of being spit out from an airplane and the horror of crashing to the ground. The bum story is an alternative life that Wilkins imagines, but even then that sort of life doesn't turn out well. It's like he has the sheer intellect to invent a time machine, but at the same time he's emotionally powerless to turn around life that seems to be descending rapidly into crisis. If there is any emotion that we can extract from him and his story, it's one of ennui. So in the utter grayness of his life, I'd say that his thought experiment may very well be a suicide fantasy.

I think the math is wrong. 43, 000ft = 13. 1064km if the speed is 200km/hr, 200: 60 = x: 1 Then x (km/minute) = 3. 33333. You hit the ground in 3. 93192 minute for 43k ft. 3. 93192 minute = 3 minute and 55. 9152 second. I would say you have 3min 56sec instead of 3min 46sec before you hit the ground. Now, you have 10 sec more and do a little more you want while falling. :-)

In reality he would be dead immediately from hitting his head on the way out,
and if he survived that then he would die from exposure / hypothermia, lack of oxygen, cold
at 43, 000 - way higher than Mt. Everest.
Pain on impact If he could be awake when he hit the ground then he would die instantly - before any pain was felt.
I want my money back on this on.

This actually happened in the old Soviet Union. Two aircraft collided and a woman survived the fall from 30. 000 feet. She was put in hospital, and then the KGB came and told her it never happened, and if it she did tell, it would have consequences. The woman lost her child and husband in the accident. After the Iron Curtain fell she was honored by Gorbachev.

so lets land feet first at terminal velocity and hit a solid surface. if you survive the initial hit you would be in an unreal amount of pain, enough to kill you anyway, and your bones would have shattered and sliced all of your organs so you would bleed from every pore. i dont know about anyone else but id rather hit head first so i dont feel a thing.

OK, I think he was a conceited idiot that wanted to commit suicide, but wanted his death to mean something, to be profound. So he wrote out this whole BS story about not thinking about his kids or his life, and he imagines what he'd say if he survived by some miracle. Then he gets on the plane, jumps out at 43, 000ft and dies. The End.

But. but. he never told us how to steer ourselves towards those things he recommended. How will I survive now At any rate, i enjoyed this, especially the story the bum told. Tragic and begging to be fleshed out, even as a minor character in a full-length movie.

Let me tell you something. I am an airline pilot of considerable experience. In a sudden decompression, as in being jettisoned from an airliner, from 43, 000 feet is 9-12 seconds. You will be unconscious, if not dead, well before hitting the ground.

Human freefall terminal velocity is 200 km/hr only at sea-level. At 43000' the air density is around 75% lower. This makes your early terminal velocity much faster, which gives you much less than 3 minutes and 48 seconds to hit the ground.

The bum time travel paradox. .. that could be it's own an entire story. One of the more cerebral examples in the DUST series, done with remarkably simple but effective graphics and production technique.

Most nonsensical proverb ever: Walk into the future backwards so you don't forget the past.
Sounds like something Bill Murray would have said in Zombie Land.

Living in the past - especially pretending you experienced a past YOU DIDN'T live is the perfect excuse to avoid being responsible for your future.

Most people whom fall from high up die of a heart attack long before hitting the ground. Even 20 stories or so is enough time to scare you to death.

Why didn't he use an umbrella I don't trust anyone unwilling to grab an umbrella when it's raining that hard. Narrator is instantly unreliable.

I once fell 15-16 feet and had two thoughts, first was there’s nothing to grab and second was this is going to hurt.

It would be a fall of about three minutes so there would be plenty of time to think about your future or lack of it.

You need oxygen above 10, 000 feet (or be inside a pressurised cabin) so you'd fall unconscious at 43, 000 feet anyway.
