Sci-Fi Short Film Always the Sun - DUST

What would you sacrifice to save the world In Rob McLellan's short Always the Sun one woman must take on this devastating responsibility. Always the Sun by Rob McLellan Four thumbs down. One for every minute.
I find it strange that in many of these shorts, they try to make up for the brevity of the film by putting less dialogue and content in it. Sometimes it works. This one took it to an unfortunate extreme. How much better this would have been if instead of seeing silent remembered scenes, we heard laughter, caught evocative bits of conversations, recollected music, even if they used muffling or echoing to indicate it was remembered. It seems like this film took the approach that in a short film, less is more, so even less must be even more. It wasnt. It took the less of a short, and reduced it further, to near nothingness. It made it hollow, vacant, as compelling as emptiness. Combining the excessive filler content (intro scenes and others, annoyingly slow and unnatural dialogue, and the poor audio, and this was tedious, boring, impoverished.
Plus, how is flying into the sun going to solve any conceivable crisis She couldnt even get to the sun in six weeks. And what was going to hit from the sun Its nonsensical. Also, poor dialogue when she asks Whens it going to hit. As if she wouldnt know this. They could have used another means to convey that like a newspaper headline. Having her ask that was an inconsistency of narrative.

This movie is so simple to understand:
People are naughty.
Sun is angry.
Sun decides to come and kill people.
People are sorry. (Not because they were naughty but because they're going to die)
Leaders decide to send virgin sacrifice into the sun as a repentance.
There are no virgins left.
Plan B. Leaders decide to send pretty crack girl into the sun instead.
Girl gets duped into believing she is the only one who the sun will accept. (Obviously not thinking straight on crack)
Girl flies into sun.
Sun still isn't happy.
Sun kills everyone.
Clearly we only get to see a portion of this story. Duh!

Bad scifi. In story telling it is vital that you give the audience just enough information that they can figure out what's going onand this video fails on all possible points. Who is the girl What is the situation on Earth Is there a problem with the sun Is the sun threatening Earth If she goes to the sun, what exactly could she do to fix the problem Why is she flying off into space What happened to her husband and daughter All we have is a tedious 4 and a half minute film of a pretty woman who looks angst-ridden throughout the whole presentation, and then she appears to fly off alone towards the sun. Huh Very disappointing.

The opening credit screen says this was made for a 48-hour film challenge. If that means this film was made from blank script to finish in 48 hours, then amazing job! But. if it were made under more normal circumstances, I'd have to agree with a lot of the things said in the comments, and add: you've got just over 4 minutes to tell a story! So why the looooong, drawn-out shots of the characters hesitating between lines of dialogue as if you've got hours I'm sure that, with parsimonious editing, you could have shown considerably more of the story.

Plot. A woman grieving over the death of her Husband and Child finds she cannot sleep and has been awake since they died in October (a very long time ago. Unable to sleep, she hallucinates that the sun stopped moving when her loved ones died. The psychologist in charge of her case gives her medicine. She tips it down the drain while claiming to have taken it. The delusion deepens and she hallucinates that she has been chosen to save the world and restart the sun. She climbs into an Illusionary spacecraft and departs nto the sun. THE END.

Suicide mission to avert a meteorite striking the earth ( when is it going to hit In about 6 weeks. . I also get the feeling she lost her husband & daughter in some kind of tragity, couldn't sleep, was depressed, stopped taking her medication & volunteered to pilot or as a crew member on the doomed ship, probably loaded with explosives, that will crash into the meteorite or object headed toward earth. Just my take on it.

I consider myself fairly intelligent, and I have seen, read, and written a LOT of science fiction. This only made the barest of sense to me. You have to give the viewer more than this. I can fill in a lot of blanks myself most of the time, but expecting the audience to write the entire story for you is simply lazy. Can't say this was any good, though the visuals were nice.

Visually stunning. A great film school project (< 5 mins long) But outside of that: a) no real sci-fi to speak of and b) a lot of blanks to fill in. If you are going to leave that many blanks, I'll just make up my own story. I learned nothing from this.

Musical score was so load it drowned out what was being said. Made if difficult to hear. Great story, She's sacrificing her life to stop an asteroid/comet about to hit Earth. Great actress, hope to see her in a lot more things.
reply

Dust. This video was a failure.
Why did she last sleep in October
What were the pills actually for
How exactly does she save the world
It's almost as if every second scene was cut out of this movie.

I loved this short film, not because it told a story but it would make an awesome prelude to a story. build-up the questions and curiosities. It would make a good movie trailer.

She's going into space wearing that much eye makeup! The ship would never get off the ground! Not to mention the nail polish. Just doesn't seem likely to me.
reply

So the sun hasn't set since October, her ship is named Icarus, so it's not an asteroid or comet. She must be flying into the sun. Great 4 minutes. Thank you

Maybe if you got the Bare Naked Ladies to sing and it all ended with a Big Bang! then added a laugh track it wouldn’t come across as pretentious twaddle.
reply

Lacking. She says Now what Exactly. Now what They might as well have ended it there if they simply wanted the viewer to fill in the blanks for themselves.
reply

Not even a clue. I have an idea from the comments that even if I had been able to hear the early dialogue over the music I still wouldn't have a clue.
reply

its ones like this make me think I may stop watching - need a disclaimer up front -
warning - no details, no ending, make it up yourself. blah.

reply

Good atmosphere. Her mission was obviously one way. And the craft named Icarus means death by Sol. I'm just not sure what her mission could have been.
reply

A few minutes could easily be cut from this film with no loss of storyline. Thankfully I mashed the right-arrow key to skip through 5 seconds at a time.
reply

No captions and the voice audio is basically completely impossible to understand even with turning my volume up far above normal. Pathetic.
reply

So she flew a ship full of ice cubes into the sun to save the Earth from global warming. Based on what we have to go on, as good a theory as any.
reply

These shorts continue to get more, and more bizzare! They need to have the background music toned waaaaay down, and the dialog un-muffled.
reply

That was whacked out, and was Impossible anyway. If she kills the sun, then we all die anyway, so it doesn't make any sence.
reply

The people of cern paid her to blow up the natural sun so that they can use their artificial sun and make us pay for it.
reply

Another one that has music louder than mumbled dialogue. I gave up trying to understand this, less than 2 minutes in.
reply

Watching it again and dubbing your own insomnia medication commercial over it made it way more entertaining.
reply

Actress is beautiful.
The tech works.
The film is average.
Oh well.
that was 4 min. of my life

reply

Like an automated ship couldnt fly itself into the sun & do whatever this lady was gonna do. Scale rating, 0.
reply

thanks all of you. Mumbles Yes. I had to strain and still couldn't 'get' it. Story line It isn't there.
reply

Ok What I get from it, She has a Husband and Child, but she would Rather Go on a Mission to Save The Earth
reply

that's not enough information. shaky premise. pretty lens flares, cool ship, pretty woman, barely a story.
reply

Sunshine and Interstellar had a bastard baby. It was neither the sharpest tool nor the brightest crayon.
reply

2: 08 what does she say lines should not be mumbled. i have no clue what the hell i just watched.
reply

you can't save the world without taking your medicine. OMG what has she done. Now we're all doomed!
reply

So someone says what's not to like and you reply nothing. The trouble is you are serious.
