Sci-Fi Short Film: Black Box - DUST

Imagine you are a scientist living in the future when an asteroid hits the Earth, causing a catastrophe. You have recorded data relating to the event, and you realise that if you could send this data into the past, then people in the past could use it to work out how to avoid the catastrophe. You are fortunate enough to possess a time machine.
You decide that you do not want to travel back in time yourself, perhaps because you may spread disease, or because this would cause paradoxes. The important thing is to send the data back in time. You cannot transmit this data by radio (which I imagine would be easier than sending a physical object) so you decide to send a physical record, contained within a secure box.
However, rather than send the box yourself, you bring your younger self from the past, and instruct her to engage in a hazardous mission to recover the box.
Apparently, it is easier for you to locate your younger self, and bring her from the past, than it is for you to move the box 50 yards to place it in the appropriate position for it to be sent back in time.
Why do you need to bring your younger self from the past in order to send the box back in time If you can send a person and a box back in time, then you can send a box alone back in time. If you can operate the time machine to bring your younger self into your present, then why can you not move the box 50 yards

Well I did watch till the end at least but I did not notice the glove on the Alien, and I could not make out many of the messages/noted (too dim, too unclear. I thought it was my screen in dim mode. hahah. And yes I am watching on my phone. :P It was an honest and good try though. And yea I also thought why is she walking or running like that but it does not bother me maybe she was scared or in weird territory/moment I can accept (not the usual Hollywood moves) makes it more realistic/believable. I cannot imagine how I would run or stagger across the place if I was in that human extinction situation: )

Really fascinating short film with a ream of paradoxical narrative strands to consider. The film very stylish and suspenseful though and full of interesting possibilities. It is especially impressive given it was made for a 48 hour movie competition. I have questions regarding the narrative, but my experience of time travel stories is you can tie yourself in knots about what could and couldn't have happened and why didn't the characters do this or that. It could definitely work as a longer piece too.

Damn. I take it that creature was the woman on the tape and the woman returning from the future is now sick with that disease So it all comes down to the containment protocols put in place at the return site. Which begs the question, why wasn't she wearing any hazmat gear It almost seems like the best case scenario is that this woman isn't supposed to survive the trip, just the box, so might be immediately eliminated.

This was one of the more simple ones I've seen, but it was clever and I liked the way it took the time to get you in visually and left the dialog to the end. By the time we got some exposition, it felt welcome. Nice sense of intrigue. All the people who worked on this seem to have done a very professional job, too, it was a polished piece.

just a bit unconventional storytelling, but seemed to have the audience drawn in after the first 3 mins. The pace was fast as with all shorts but I felt it left a bit too much for the viewer to piece together to make sense of it after it was over; like I'd had to rewatch it a time or 2 to absorb the details

Well now time travel using a portacabin thats not what DR Who would have used! The figure we will call it that, was hairless and little features to signify what, Evil Definitely a different take on an apocalyptic event. I still give it a Thumbs up though.

Extremely low budget. I missed the brief moment when the creature is wearing a blue glove. I did several re-winds, and had a growing sense of respect for the film-makers skill, and story line. Ver good job!

The fact that the timer gave her 7 minutes to complete the mission and the short film ends under 7 minutes is so good, not unlike other movies where a 5 minutes countdown takes almost an eternity to end,

Loved the movie. Only thing that drove me crazy was, if I only had 7 minutes to complete the mission, I think I'd have more of a sense of urgency than she did. She did everything but stop to eat a sandwich.

I really enjoyed this. Not sure I understand. Does she succeed Or are we left to not know for sure Help Thank you and excellent short. Even if it is opened ended it really works for me.

The actress was perfect.
I was surprised to hear about people complaining about the lighting. I am old and it is the end of day, but it seemed fine to me. So I disagree.

This is a good Dust movie imo. Good acting, great suspence right from the get-go and inriguing till the end.
But that end left me wishing for more than this open end.
