A grieving plumber seeks out a disgraced quantum physicist to rid himself of a tormenting Hum. HUM by Stefano Nurra More About HUM: Grieving plumber Chris Page is tormented by a mysterious low frequency noise seemingly only he can hear. The unexplained phenomenon known as The Hum. With the help of rogue scientist Prof. McAven, Chris traces the origin of the sound, discovering way more than expected. Director's Statement: Although I am a great fan of science fiction movies, some of the best sci-fi experiences I can remember come from reading books. Especially the relatively new breed of sci-fi known as The New Weird. Hum is my personal contribution to the genre, an emotional short story, very much in the style of writers of the New Weird movement I love (such as China Mieville, Jeff Vandermeer, exploring quantum physics related concepts that always fascinated me and experimenting with the science fiction medium. Science-fiction has a tendency of proposing very visual-based concepts (aliens, otherwordly beings, machines, etc) and I wanted to go down a more sound-based premise, something that really lends itself to more abstract thought and opens doors to relate science with mystical theories. Hum is inspired by real theories surrounding the nature of the still unexplained phenomenon known as The Hum. Only 2% of populaiton around the world can perceive it and the descriptions fo how it sounds are scarce and difficult to recreate. Therefore, developing the sound for the film was a massive challenge that took a long time, mostly based on the recording of the movements of the Earth's core mixed with the chants of Tuvan monks. Without giving too much away theme-wise, this is also related to the film's theme, rooted it in a strong emotional premise such as reconnecting with the here and now. This, together with the film's premise, demanded extreme care in developing a look that wasn't too cold and detached, whilst at the same time exploring the fantasy world of the Hum in a visually impressive way. The inspiration for Hum's look and its visual effects comes from research of alchemical drawings, illustrations from The Tibetan Book of the Dead as well as an healthy dose of graphic novels staples such as The Sandman and the early issues of Hellblazer

Beware of spoilers!
HUM by Stefano Nurra
Plot: Two men are searching for the source of the problem that haunts them. The theme is very nice and quite unusual among the sci-fi themes. The plot is presented nicely, the information is served gradually, without empty scenes. The end is not open, yet it brings more than just denouement of what we saw earlier. Man’s final statement is really nice. The full story in 13 minutes!
Negatives: I have found none
Positives: 1) theme; 2) actors and acting; 2) dialogues
Personal note: I liked the pebbles and the setting of the gate, I do not know why exactly. Maybe it just brought me the feeling of afterlife plane of existence.
Summary: very good short, definitely above average

so is no one going to talk about the fact that the hum is an actual phenomena experience by real world people who are perfectly sane, but just might turn insane because of it.
The hum has been compared to mysterious trumpets in the skies, or the loud boom shock waves that have been shattering windows all across the world.
Perhaps this are all related and connected in some way. The hum however, can not be heard by everyone, it is belived to be ultra low frequency waves because it feels more like vibrations in the eardrums, head, and body of the victims. This certainly gives a whole new fascination to an already fascinating existing phenomena in our real daily life.

This 3D universe as we observe it is a slice of a 4D universe. The question is what kind of a slice. The answer lies in how the universe is behaving at a macro scale. There are evidence to speculate that this 3D universe as we perceive it is a surface/layer of a hypersphere.
The observable universe is a circle on this surface.
The hypersphere is being inflated translates to the expansion of our universe.
If you travel at any direction indefinitely - you should arrive at the same point - going around the hypersphere (if you manage to) - on the same place as you started.
yadi yadi yada.

That was deep. Some things are far fetched though. Finding the location instantly by looking at a table of coordinates, that one place on the surface of Earth would be a natural portal, also extra dimensions are not suggested by quantum mechanics but by string theory. I suppose good sci-fi often plays with the duality between objectivity and subjectivity. Here the subjective part is the psychological aspect of missing the dead, that is surely as intense as a wild sensation of sound that compels to try and find where it comes from. Though here it does not overlap well with objective part.

This is like one of those types that you just need to watch from beginning to end to understand the point.
The unbearable feeling of losing your loved one and the fact that fighting against it, never accepting it as a reality is the meaning for the HUM that keeps crippling the mind. Nobody can get over anything like that, but accepting it is a way of not letting it completely destroy us in a process.
Definitely surprised me how well written this was.

I have experienced those sounds and pains when I was a kid. They tried clearing my ears and it has lessened. After years it came back again after I was transferred to our province. I was close to depression because of loneliness every night. My mom never showed her affection for me. I was glad I was able to adjust with everything and the severe pain has lessened until it was gone.

Very neat, efficient storytelling. You know who the characters are, their relationship and the situation with minimal exposition.
Bits that I especially liked:
The mise-en-scene with the flashing high-tech display behind McAven during the interview, only to reveal that they're in a pub.
The XCU of the gravel moving.
The glitch editing when Chris reaches for Michael.

I hear something like this. It's a constant 9kHz sine wave. Its louder with ear plugs (or at least most noticeable. And it's much louder when clenching my teeth. I hear it basically 24 / 7 no matter what. Ear doc said said no damage or obstruction. I pass all of my hearing tests. Idk what to think but nobody I've talked to has ever experienced it.

Going to watch this later as the air-conditioning unit on the telephone-exchange building across has started humming loudly again lately, which usually means it won't be long before it'll start making metal-on-metal grinding noises!
As it is, the humming makes it difficult enough to sleep as I suffer from chronic headaches & tinnitus!

I experienced this low frequency noise when I bought my new home next to the foothills a few years ago. My roommate had a noise generating machine but when it broke I really started to notice it. I went on a local app called Next Door and many other people had said that they noticed it. I can talk further if anyone is interested.

10: 55 Quantum physics affirms there's not just one dimension.
Well, actually we live in a 3-dimensional world and you don't need quantum physics to know that.
On the other hand, quantum physics did predict 10 spacial dimensions, just not how it was depicted here.
Still, great short.

reply

Fascinating.
I was thinking maybe the triangulation would send them to a location on the surface and they'd later find out that the source was from inside the earth, which would complicate getting to the source.
This story could have gone in so many different directions.

Interesting thing is the world wide hum exists and yes only 2 percent of the population can here it it sounds like distant lorries idling its been here in Australia for about seven years its nowhere near as intense as portrayed hear more a background hum

Okay. Sound issue. 'have you had a traumatic. recently. just a bit too quickly said(2: 11-13. articulation. but the bearded guy should have the keys to his truck with him anyway hmm. Cheers Great Work and acting.

Excellent short. Cinemas should show a short film before the main feature. When I grew up, there was usually a trailer film first and then the main film. Oh yes and the national anthem at the end.

There is no way students and beginners can fund cool sci-fi like this, plus they occasionally star real Hollywood actors, there must be some underground funding, either way, I'm grateful

In the Bristol area of the UK starting in the 60, s there were numerous reports of a humming sound, which was investigated at quite a high level. Check out THE BRISTOL HUM UK.

Personally I think it works the other way. Ever feel like you're not alone in an empty room, catch a glimpse of a shadow on a sunless day, you get the idea. Good job Dust.
reply

Very nice. But I have one minor quibble. That sound is anything but a hum. Take it from someone who suffers from severe Tinnitus. That sound is a deep rumble if anything.
reply

This actor was absolutely perfect for this part. Both of them. What a brilliant production of an age old idea. Loved this one so much I’ve watched it several times

Like so many tough situations in our lives. they don't disappear, but we need to learn how to control them (or at least deal with them. Excellent filmmaking!
reply

this is taken off the Taos 'hum'. in New Mexico. only a certain % hear it. and its constant. a background noise for some, and for some too loud to live there.
reply

Hello, thank you all concerned with the making of this well played film/movie, much better than the Cp on normal TV/cinema etc, thanks all so much, great plot!
reply

so, a sound represents what is happening in the present, and this hum is from the past. Like the big bang that is a resonance from a plausible history. Go man go

An amazing film. Interesting story line, great effects, and sound acting. I hope this group that made this film are busily making more of this quality.

Typical guy: Sees something fantastical with his own eyes but cannot believe it and calls the other guy a liar when he explained what it was he saw

Great short! Well done everyone involved. Stefano, it was an honour sharing the stage with yout tonight. You are an incredible musician as well!
reply

This was a good film, a shame the funding could not been made available to further expand the story. Excellent effort to all involved.
reply

Just wondering if the title was updated to HUMMER whether that would increase the number of views. Worth some A/B testing.
reply

What's the sauce Hmm, that's what I need to find out. It's going to be either HP or Heinz, I can tell you that much!
reply

Since UFOs are now real, maybe Pentagon will confirm that they have verifiable recordings of the Hum too

Starring the winner of the Donald Pleasence look alike contest. (With respect: R. I. P. 1995)

Only 2% of the population can hear it
But it's not a sound. Riiiiigghhht. Makes perfect sense.

I loved this. Especially UK based as it gives it more of an edge. Congratulations Stefano Nurra.

Just a quick observation. when hearing a loud noise, why did they not cover their ears I would!
