A mother befriends a burnt-out hacker to help search for her son in virtual reality. How Is This The World by Sadie Rogers Connect with the Filmmakers: How Is This The World Absolutely loved this! I love how youve made the mother into this liberating character wearing bold clothing & makeup. It is very refreshing seeing an older female in this kind of role! Bravo!
As for the ending - it was very powerful. but it felt somewhat incomplete.
The Moms avatar. the mother as she called herself in the gym. I thought she was there to be a companion & guide To help the Mom in her mission Why then, would she sing this powerful song that encourages the Mom to leave him alone As per the last lines of the song. The mother is literally doing the opposite of what she said she would do.
Then theres the menacing glance by the female companion her son is in love with. the one over his shoulder. I thought she was neither good or bad
Then, just when I thought there would be some kind of grand interaction. the peak of the movie. What the whole story has been leading up to, to this point. everything just stops. Its over.
I felt disappointed. Like, the story did a great job of creating a connection between the characters & the watchers. so youre emotionally connected to the story & what happens. So when the story abruptly ended. it was like a gut punch. Everything felt hollow.
Im not sure if Im explaining that correctly. Im just trying to explain how the ending emotionally impacted me.
Overall, amazing job! Everything was perfect! Its just the ending that threw me off. I hope to see more work from you!
Kindest Regards;
Nancy

I know I already commented about this short, when I watched it on a compilation video. but I REALLY think you guys should make this into a full length movie! Everyone keeps saying ready player one is similar, and suggesting to others to watch it. But this short, is NOTHING like that movie/book. Not even close! It would be so awesome, to see more of this short! It's one of my favorites. Idk if it's due to the nostalgic feel to it, or what. But it just really makes me feel connected to the characters, the storyline, and leaves me wanting to know more. Like will she ever possibly get her son back I know it's meant to be she realizes he's where he belongs. But it could also be open to interpretation. And I believe this short is one that could be taken farther. I've seen quite a bit of other shorts, made into full length movies. And still he just as awesome.

They lose sight of eternity in here. I can understand that. Why would you even want to return to reality if you can live in what, for you, is a perfect world Unfortunately, there are consequences to that. There must be a normally functioning brain to interpret virtual reality, which also means a functioning body. Neglect either one long enough and the consequences are catastrophic. He'll die here when he dies there.
It really opens up a larger philosophical question, though. Our bodies furnish our brains with multiple stimuli which our brains interpret as reality. But if you replace the stimuli from the body with similar stimuli from an artificial source, to the brain it will be an equally legitimate reality. It won't know the difference. So which is the real one How do you even define reality in that case

absent parents in the 60's was replaced by nonstop TV watching
absent parents in the 70's replaced with ATARI 400/800 and others
absent parents in the 80's replaced with the video arcade / pacman
absent parents in the 90's replaced with the role playing games
absents parents in the 2000's replaced with internet roles
absents parents in the 2010's replaced with gaming nations/tournaments
absents parents in the 2020's replaced with hologram visors
what's next
you lose eternity - as this video so aptly puts it
NOTE: It is tough to NOT be an absent parent - it takes time and desire and a lot of help to learn to not be the child of a child (the hacker with alcohol as his binge)

I like this one, (just like with most Dust shorts. There a couple of things that have confused me a bit though. Firstly, that opening scene, where the Mum has the VR visor on & is laughing. I'm not sure how it relates to the story, since she spends most of the time trying to get her son out of that world. Secondly, Raj is a different race to her, so I don't see how he can be her son. Strange casting choice. Overall, cool short though. & that song the end is brilliant! Dungeon by Sadie and the Stark. I'm thinking of buying it in the near future.

This would make a great movie. It is similar to ready player one, however I feel this take on it would have more heart. I love the idea of escaping into this fantasy play world. The aesthetic of this one appeals to me more. You could make it more of a philosophical movie. Why would you want to come out of this world even if it hurts your body in the real world I always wondered in Ready Player One if the reason that they wanted to spend all of their time in the Oasis was the cause of the real world looking so bleak or was it vice versa.

Awesome story, but the music is what really sent this production over the top, especially that last performance. Of all the productions curated by DUST, and I've seen almost all of them for years, this one stands out in its own category. Everyone fit their part perfectly. A lot of work must have gone into creating this, but it all comes together in its own way. It's a bit unclear if she actually saw her son in there, but she still had quite the experience venturing into that parallel universe virtual world.

I love these videos and I hate to complain that they are so dark. I have my brightness turned up all the way still nothing. I have to turn on all the lights in the house just to see the screen and nobody here likes that so I can't watch these videos in the dark please brighten them up just a tad
Edit: it's just the night time scenes so I have to just wait and watch them when I'm underneath the lamp that's a shame I like to be able to watch them all the time

All a mother really wants, is to know that her child is happy and loved. When they grow up and move away, we have to be content with our memories and let them go on their own way. The heartbreak of parenting is that you teach your kids to be independent and make their own choices - and then they do.

The most human handling of the subjects it touches, that I've ever witnessed. Oh how I felt the music in my body. And I knew what the mother knew, a moment before she discovered it herself. So many beautiful tears, even now. Thank you to all those who created this lovely and insightful gift

It is amazing how talented you guys are. That was so good! So, didn't the Mom's AI friend tell her that the younger AI, the son's girlfriend, was not supposed to be there Has the son's AI girlfriend reached consciousness and is keeping him there She didn't look very friendly.

I've watched a lot of these and most of them seem like student projects to demonstrate programming and artistic ability. This film had an amazing story and concept that could be a feature length film. Really strong work. Thanks and good luck with a career in film and the arts!

I hate this future, and while people will definitely get addicted, especially since less and less work will be required be humans and they will resort to living it all.
OR
We could actually return to the real greens and not the VR.
I hate this future.

The music reminded me of an old movie called Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me. There's a bar scene in the middle of the movie and a girl singing this sad haunting song mimicking Laura Palmers emotions at the time. Eerie and beautiful at the same time. Nice short

Incredible. One time at a campfire I asked everyone if they were offered the chance to be put into a Matrix world permanently, if they'd take it. Most of them said no, but I genuinely think seeing this video would make them at least reconsider the question.

This type of situation is probably only 10 years or so away for real. I’ve had a very disappointing personal life but it is a bit better than 2 years ago. Still, something like this could make social media’s impact to society look like the tip of the iceberg

I wanted to like it but waaaaaaaaaaay too much pointless smoking. Did nothing for character development or atmosphere. There was plenty for the actors to do besides smoking. Loved the music and I skipped to the end just to see how it ended. Decent story.

This beats out monsters, vampires, child abduction for a fear level of 10. 0. With four daughters, I can imagine the terror I’d feel knowing my child was trapped by the likes of this kind of tech. Very provocative, well done.

WOW really great on all levels - world building, acting, editing is just amazing - and the music use and music editing terrific. And big shout out to production design team -Yes would be excellent series.

i really like dust videos but why is their never a part 2, 3. 4 etc it gets you into the story and its over and never to be seen or worked on again makes me just want to unsub and never look at dust again.
reply

I'd watch a full movie of this. I like it. I'd change the wig on the guide though. Looks kind of plain on her. I'd give her a stylish, more elegant up-do that maybe sparkles in purple or teal.
reply

I love the music. I don't love that there was no resolution to the story.
But then again, this being DUST and all, they probably demanded a sad ending so no ending was included.

That would be one way to rid the world of people. The last of humankind ending life in a paradise cyberspace, with no real life procreation and child rearing
