The biggest flaw is that a single detective was sent on a mining platform isolated from everything with 3 people on board, every one of them could have been the murderer, or even all 3 and they had planned it together, the interrogation makes clear that could have happened given the feelings they had towards the captain.
The kid remembering seeing the traitor on the seat at the end was a great touch, he realized who had done it and killing the detective didn't solve his problems but made him a murderer.
Wonder if they were killed by the raiders as feared or let alive as hostages, I believe that the raiders could have left them alive to help with the take over, but discovering their bomb plan would change their minds.
The traitor fate is unknown, the raiders could reveal the truth about him or use it as blackmail for future saboutage, if the 2 left behind were used as hostages the traitor could still go down.
If he is a bit more smart and less impulsive the solution would be to leave Earthj with his family as quick possible.

Lot going on, but the atmosphere, acting, and conclusion really stood out.

Great insight into each character and human nature. I found the build up on raiders compared to their interaction at the end interesting. They sounded like the more civilized and powerful group. Made me wonder if they were made out to be the bad guys so the real bad guys on Earth could get away with murder. Loved the twist with the detective and the person they falsely accused (which I didnt really get if that was just him being a jerk or if he really thought it might have been more than one person involved.
My one complaint is ultimately the killer put his stamp on the evidence which made all the question superfluous. Of course you cant have one of the innocent people do what they did if you go directly to the person responsible.
Great job on a very interesting series.

This was enjoyable despite the jarring anachronisms (that may well have been deliberate to hark back to old school detective shows / films. A 'space detective' arriving in a suit, Polaroid pictures, paper records (a lot of modern offices are as paperless as possible, signatures used on shipping manifests, cardboard storage boxes. yet we've advanced enough to have space stations way out of earth orbit, to mine asteroids and to have huge attack ships

The mise-en-scene looks a lot like a 20th/21st century interrogation (the room, the camera, the guy in the suit, and I guess that is evocative of the mood that the film makers wanted to elicit, but sometimes it does take me out of the movie when the sci-fi worldbuilding is dribbed and drabbed in (which is great. I wish those two aspects could have been meshed just a little bit more. Otherwise, this is great stuff!

I think I might be getting lost here, keep finding really good shorts on here. This one was awesome, great job building the story and hiding the killer, it's tough because your trying to build a story that hides the killer while slowly revealing very subtle information about the killer. This was a fun one to watch.

I'm puzzled why lazy film makers automatically assume artificial gravity (naturally, at an equivalent of acceleration at 9. 8m/s2) and have sets looking like something out of the 1960s. It's not noire, or atmospheric. It's just tired, which leaves one with little confidence in the underlying story.

The series itself was engaging and interesting, but the ad breaks were done quite poorly. They cut in at the most awkward of times, interrupting the story at critical points and even interrupting the actors mid-sentence. Shame for so much effort and creativity to be ruined by such carelessness.
reply

For someone so smart, that kid isn't the brightest. You'd think he'd have seen the giant cut on the inspectors head mixed with the shuttle being engaged that he's not the killer or at least that there's someone else more likely to blame than himself

This is how my dad died back in 1976. Took his own life, they all said. I was 11 yrs old, had to identify his body at the morgue. He had sprayed something down his throat and something had hit his nose.

This is one of the best in the DUST series. Skillfully written, produced, and presented. I love all the DUST episodes but this one is at the top of my list in terms of all round excellence.
reply

The acting is first class, and the story is incredibly gripping. What a fantastic short film. 10/10 If only Hollywood would actually give these people the budget and a shot.
reply

Nicely done. Good script and fine acting. Except for the Inspector. However I understand neither Peter Falk nor David Suchet were available! ; ) Well done otherwise.
reply

I am curious why Lennox told Toby directly that the captain was killed, while others were not informed about it also they had motives and already were suspects
reply

The idea behind is good, but it takes 25min to get the story started, that's way too long, and the camera work is jerky which causes motion sickness to me
reply

To me, this is probably the BEST written (and acting) of all the DUST series. I liked it as it was a total story. not leaving you hanging.
reply

This is a story that would work in any setting, from caveman days to far into the future. Great acting. Well done video.

I'm not one for detective type movies. But this was excellent! Really cool story with some twists! Dust ROCKS!
reply

I keep being shocked over and over by how good these short movies from Dust are! And this one is excellent as well!
reply

That was bloody brilliant, rarely does something grab my attention and make me watch, but I now want more
reply

Fairly well made and acted, but the story was crap. You wasted my time with that Huge Bummer of a story.
reply

This was indeed The Big Nothing. Dragging on and on to end with a big, dull, thud. Don't waste your time.
reply

It would be nice to see sci fi short films in foreign languages too.
Eg Korean, Japanese etc.

reply

wow, with all the advance tech, they didn't have surveillance. And who keeps reports on paper nowadays
reply

This was well done, kudos to everyone involved, crew and cast --you all gave 100% and it shows!

Neodinium. Every spacer knows: the real money is in mining vibrainium! Get a science advisor!
reply

No one would allow their craft to be taken without a security code! This does not add up!
reply

This was absolutely perfect except for the murder at the end. That comoletely ruined the impact.
reply

Threee people benefitted from his death but they are a good fit to keep place running
reply

Finally! A film where the bad guy wins! Thank you so much first time in 40 years.
reply

so. randomly the kid decides to become a murderer I hate it when plots don't make any sense.
reply

can someone explain what happens at the end
i watched it 3 times and still have no idea.

reply

If Spain Prime Minister says no more ties how is possible to see a tie in SciFi movie
reply

This story is the best and most well-done I have seen on Dust. Very sharp. Bravo!
reply

Wow! What amazing acting, that detective was just perfect! Loved this, thank you
