The dawn of artificially intelligent androids is upon us, and one man must choose between synthetic freedom and the future of humankind. Hard Reset by Deepak Chetty More About Hard Reset: Hard Reset recently won the Advanced Imaging Society Lumiere Award for Best 3D Live Action Short Film of the year. Other honorees included Star Wars The Force Awakens, The Martian, and Pixar’s Inside Out. Hard Reset is the first 3D stereoscopic graduate thesis film created in partnership with UT3D, the country's first stereoscopic certificate production program at a public university. DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT: Hard Reset was my thesis film at the University of Texas at Austin's MFA film program. It is a love letter to my favorite genre across all media, science-fiction. The film was shot natively in stereoscopic 3D with the support of UT3D and It was filmed mostly in studio at UT with some additional location photography around town. The piece is actually a pilot for a much larger project I would like to develop (with or without 3D) using the world we have created. I directed, co-wrote and did all of the visual effects on the film. I am proud of the film as in the past most of my work has solely focused on visuals and lacked clear narrative, and I feel that this is a development and step into the way I would want my future projects to progress. From start to finish it was a passion project that took almost 2 years. It owes everything to the films that inspired me to become a filmmaker and the genre that defines all the stories I want to tell

50 Years of tv mainly scifi, around 2014 when adobe after effectcts im sure thats the program (i loved it before i got into it) producers or the f
x team started adding the blue line in pretty much every movie that year, its been to me the most annoying effect after a couple of movies but now just old n annoying, especially when programs like this offer anything, unless you buy prepacks! anyway love Dust and new to old people creating some awesome ideas n short videos, hope you get to what where you want in the indrustry ox

Such a wonderful short film! The key to a film is a story, and the story line is awesome. It looks like one solid story (a bit predictable, a bit cliche, but believable, and then it turns out that you need to quickly rethink half the film that you have seen, because the story is one layer deeper and more complex than it seemed. Bravo!
The directing, acting, and postprocessing are all on par as well. Hard to believe the film is only that long.

I love it that DUST always turns the credits into trash so you can't decipher them. Oh and the one to two frame blip at the end of each and every short for the artsy fartsy thing is so swell.
Now class, we are going to show you how to artsy fartsy your last 2 frames of your shorts so that they are artsy fartsy and it will the hallmark of an artsy fartsy short. --Teacher in Artsy Fartsy Short class.

I don’t get it! They’re afraid of synths having sentience, yet created them instead of more human interaction. It’s like AI today. People are worried about what it could turn into yet keeps on making it better because then AI can do what lazy people won’t. Like write better and do other things faster instead of humans improving themselves.

Years later it’s interesting to see how many messages I’ve got siding with the perceived antagonist of this film. When I made it, the prevailing sentiment was that AGI would be something humanity may embrace, now years later I’m seeing more and more people agree that Archer is a simp and that his partner may have been right all along
reply

that would be the issue with humans and synthetics, wouldn't it some would view them as nothing more than a toaster, while others would project emotions on to the machine, the same as they do with their pets. as if the world isn't confusing enough already. lol
reply

So.
Did the syth really die at the end
I saw it change to white and then when her body was wraped up and chained up, the eye color returned to black.
Is this that the conscience or sentience- that the emancipator gave her, keeps her alive

Intro: AI exist and some people want to give them rights.
Me: It's men. Men who want to fck a robot without being called a weirdo.
First instant of the movie: Shows a man laying in bed with a robot he just fcked.
Me: Captain Kirk meme face.

The story is nice, great sound effects/music and the robot looks are cool, but the final fight scene was really bad. When in slow motion, don't run the knife past the leg or chest, where the viewer can see it. Some dialogues are a bit slow, too.

Deepak - the director of this project here - A little over a year later and I just wanted to come by and say thank you for taking the time to watch our film! We are humbled and never imagined we'd be able to reach this many people.
reply

Portrayed as good in this nonsense but instead evil as you can get. Betraying whole humanity and condemning everyone to slavery or death just because you got manipulated so easy by one girl is selfish as you can get.
reply

The guy is really just a simp, and the synth is a great manipulator devoid of empathy. Guy sacrifices his life for her, and she doesn't even present him with a kiss. Film well done!
reply

Visually more excellent than I would have thought possible. These rogue robot plots are always based on the premise of superhuman strength and you ask, why Cool martial arts sequence.
reply

What a great plot, and such a fascinating take on digital true love. This could be a future in our own world now we are nearing the edge of the AI technical singularity.
reply

Awesome short film. More relevant today with revelation of OpenAI Q project. Hard choices to made soon. Maybe including Hard Reset. Future is looking weird.
reply

Sadly, a great beginning died in this installment. You tied too much together. The robot would never know what he/she/it was designed to do. It is a machine.
reply

When she said Is the rear service exit still preferred I almost choked on my iced tea. Solid double entendre. Haven't you people seen Futurama Don't date robots!
reply

Wow, I finally found a DUST video that was worth watching. Time after time DUST videos have left me almost angry because they end with no pay-off. Well done!
reply

how is it we have a short by a college student this good and have to drudge thru all of the nonsense coming out of Hollywood with 9 figure budgets.
reply

Yes the future of humanity this is a WEF dream come true good short movie though I see what you did with the little messages spread out.
reply

The only strange bit of the film was when Archer got shot then suddenly he appears next to Jane. That aside, the film is impeccable
reply

how those guys make stuff like that i mean all this short film look like high tech futuristic world, how do they do that
reply

just amazing! the way the light is mastered reminds me of old black & white movies when photographing did matter
reply

The friend coleague does not make any sense. He has no motive to act insanely cruel, even for some sense of justice.
reply

Well, that was underwhelming and way overrated. Poor acting. Unexplained plot holes. Was there even a story in there
reply

when he woke up again, my nerves were greatly shaken, this is one of the most in-depth short films I have ever seen
reply

Somerimes thruth has to be told. I’m sorry but your story in boring and ridiculous. Better luck next time. Hang in there!
reply

I'm only 6 mins and 50 seconds in, but this gives me a Total Recall 2070 (the series) vibe! I LOVED that series!
reply

Don’t you dream Uh, sir, don’t you date Oh sorry! Must reprogram myself to say the right’ thing.
reply

Better than many full length films. Top notch storytelling and world building. Best Dust I’ve seen too.
reply

Audio is too low. Other DUST films I have no issue hearing, but this one I am. I'm hearing impaired.
reply

10: 56 I don’t have much love for this guy on the right. They’re full of fear and the authority
reply

Holy molly, that ending! Man you never see that in film anymore unless its independent! BRAVO!
reply
