Video game consoles are nothing without their controllers. But exactly how have gamepads changed over the years? What led us to the standard game controllers of today?

Steam controller is my absolute favorite. Including both touchpads as an input method is a game changer, an innovative one, but unfortunately, not for anyone who isn't open to new paradigms. Gyro, back paddle buttons, dual stage triggers and the enormous amount of possible configurations (radial menus, touch gestures, activators, mode shifting, etc) are its strongest features. Once you get used to it, playing any fps (or any shooter) with it is a bliss, going back to stick aiming feels so primitive.

Great, comprehensive video. May I suggest another topic? How about a video on how control methods evolved through the years, basically how we started with the digital D-pad in the 2D platformer era and then went to using the left analog stick, how the right analog stick took its camera control function, how the action buttons such as fire, jump etc. migrated from the ABXY group to the shoulders/trigger, all that kind of gradual change?

I thought we would see some non-console related items like the Quickshot 2, and Microsoft's force-feedback joystick (which was excellent - In Freespace 2 you could tell the direction enemy fire was coming from due to the way the joystick tried to move).
Also no mention of analogue triggers? These are why I still use a wireless 360 controller for any driving game, and flying in No Man's Sky.

why do people always praise the joystick offset as on XBox styled controllers ''as the best''? I'v used that controller ones, and it f-upped my left thumb for days. i don't get it honestly. i have never recomended it and always told people i now to stay away from it if they haven't used it. and thees people have never liked it after using a PS style controller. baffle me sideways

also a fun thing about the ps 3 controller is that they changed the grip slightly by putting a little space below the L2 and R2 buttons to place your middle finger. A thing many people did in the orginal versions of the PlayStation controller. but found uncofterbale due to the controllers previously wanting you to always have your hands on the buttons.

I prefer the analog stick design of a Playstation controller over Xbox which is why Playstation has always been my must have console since the original Playstation, I haven't gotten to use the ps5 controller yet but tbh I kinda wish it was the same dualshock us Playstation lovers know and love

It's not past or present I'll admit, but if we can jump ahead a bit to 2401, I'd like to say I was really impressed with the intuitiveness of the Nintendo L's Neuroband or -Loop- controller. You really feel like you are Luigi, even down to his crushing feeling of mediocrity.

not many people these days realise the playstation buttons, even now, are pressure sensitive i dont think. no one talks about it. metal gear solid uses it for firing, but if you let go slow he doesnt fire. its crazy. i think its become the norm that we dont notice it.

Growing up in the 80-s and using the NES controller and now knowing it was the first of its kind just makes me feel grateful to be born when I was. I-m glad I missed out on any controller before then lol
