You of course completely missed out having to wait 2 n a half to 5 mins for the game to load back in the days of the Speccy and sometimes the game would crash back to the OS(Desktop if you will) right at the point where the load was meant to finish and you would not only have to load the game again but also rewind the tape heh
Also it annoys me that only early PC gaming is ever mentioned like it was some kinda -big thing- back then. Here in the uk about 1 in 15-20 gamers had a pc, the rest had Amigas and some consoles too and the Amiga was just put the disk in, game boots, done and everyone had hundreds of games coz everyone just copied everyone elses.

For me with PC gaming - a mouse with a physical roller ball. They tracks would get gummed up with crap from the desk and just horrible stuff making it impossible for the ball to turn so you had to unscrew the bottom and clean out the rollers. Eventually the rollers would get damaged to the point it was useless so off to the PC hardware store to pick up yet another huge clunky mouse. Nowadays it's just a laser sensor. Don't even need a mouse mat if you have a smooth desk surface.

The only handheld I had was Coleco football. And we always had a battery tester in the drawer with the batteries. I still do.
-
That -plug in the middle of the cord- you pointed to is called a choke. It is an inductive coil in place to cut down on signal noise.
-
You can still rent some (few) games at RedBox machines. I know only one person who does that to see if they want to later buy it, or if they instead finish it in their rental period.

Games that literally told you nothing about what you were supposed to do were so annoying. One of the best things nowadays is like in Uncharted, where if you wander around for a few minutes, a hint pops up telling you where to go, so that like you have the opportunity to figure stuff out yourself, but if you're legitimately confused you can always continue playing your game.

Kids today will never know the feeling of watching your gameboy screen fade away, get harder and harder to see as the batteries died. and you wouldn't stop either, you'd just be there, squinting at the screen, or holding it up to the light at various angles to try and make out the increasing lighter and lighter pixels while still trying to play the game.

While built-in rechargeable batteries are great, it becomes a big challenge when they've gone through all their charge/discharge cycles and need to be replaced. Then they become a major pain as you often will have to dismantle the devices to replace them. Gadgets with easily removeable/replaceable rechargeable batteries are the best.

I remember renting resident evil nemeisis on psx and clocking it over a few days. Swearing at Carmageddon in 1997 cos it was a pain to install on windows 95 -think it was like dos - open an exe file and type 'run' or something. A year later I tried to play Motor City Online with dial up. A big fail lol.

Ah Charles Grodin, bless him -
Cheap batteries are also crap on cordless controllers. I don't know why but they would send my Shepard squiffy and make her pull out her weapon randomly and make her fire incessantly. To the point of no ammo and switching weapon and repeat...
