Pirate of the Caribbean Online. Released by Disney in '03 was the GOAT of pirate games or even MMORPGs in my humble opinion. It was everything WOW was and so much more. I could write for hours about it but you gotta see it for yourself.
The Disney version shut down (i remember the closing event too) but a passionate community managed to recreate the game and launch it by just removing any trademark Disney property calling it the legend of pirates online plus the original featured a free tier capping the level lower and what you can unlock in the game and an unlimited tier. The remake is fully free so we all get unlimited access.
As for what you said about unfinished games I think that is due to using agility as a project mangment approach instead of traditional V cycles. Meaning it used to be a game would stay in development until all features where created and tested and validated and then version 1 would be the ultimate version with maybe a bit of patching if major bugs are found. Today they sequence the game into many unfinished versions and as soon as it's at least capable of running they ship it and then continue working on newer versions through updates. I learned the lesson never to buy a game on release unless it's something I've been anticipating a lot.
And of course anything live service that isn't also free to play can forget it.

For all the haters out there about the on foot combat action missing I do hear you and accept your point. However after playing the open beta and and since buying the legendary edition to play 3 days early I'm now over 90 hours into he game and can't put it down. Reminds me of a modern day sid myers game. Already unlocked all and built all pirate ships bar the one where you can only get from getting pieces of 8 from rum missions. Unlocked all equipment bar the pieces of 8 ones. Haves 1000s of silver and components ready for future. I just find myself making a coffee and sailing the seas everyday I really do love it. Yes may not be for everyone, but for anyone who wants to try buy ubisoft connect for one month and try it. First few hours are a bore but after that the game probably begins and becomes really fun.

Super disappointing to hear that this is what Skull & Bones eventuated into. Pirates are my special interest and I have been waiting for this game for so long. I was hoping it would be a good rival to Sea of Thieves, but the fact that there's no hand-to-hand or digging for treasure on islands is just disappointing. I love lore in games as well, the more compelling the lore is the more I love it. I want a game that makes me FEEL like a pirate, rising the ranks, forming alliances with other crews, proving myself to the top (sea)dogs. By if it's just grinding and grinding with no explanation and empty of story. that's not really what I was expecting. Hopefully they'll add more in the future, but I guess I'll hold off for now.

Dear Ubisoft: All you HAD to do was listen to the fans and combine the performance and features of AC: Black Flag and AC: Valhalla sailing dynamics with the FUN of games like Sea of Thieves and allow for a dynamic, open world experience.
You HAVE the power to do this. You HAVE the technology to do this. You KNOW people dislike full priced games as a service and that true gamers hate microtransactions.
You know ALL of this! You had everything at your disposal to make a pirate game to end all pirate games. And what did you do You made. this.

Drive your ship at 60 knots toward an enemy that is stationary waiting for you, hit the glowing red bits with your machine cannons until they get to below 50% hp then press y for the cutscene to end the battle. This is apparently fun and engaging gameplay. I was really considering getting it because I wanted a pirate game that takes itself a bit more seriously than Sea of Thieves and is better populated but turns out Ubisoft has made a worse game than World of Warships in the age of sail. Thanks Gameranx for saving me and my wallet yet again

The people who wanted this game. The people that convinced Ubisoft to make it. The people who were willing to wait for it. Those people are not the ones that would play this. That's Ubisoft's mistake. They basically got an idea of their target market, then made the game something that wouldn't appeal to them. So naturally, this will flop.
It isn't unfair to compare it to Black Flag. That's what the game is based on. It's totally fair to compare the two. This game loses to a game that's over 10 years old by the same company.

More low quality to go with the endless stream of low quality in the gaming industry at the moment. The industry is plagued by early access games that are just not good enough. This is because people are paying for half completed ideas because its all too easy for developers to just churn out any old crap and get paid for it as well. As gamers we need to stop fuelling this lazy attitude towards making games, if we keep on paying for poor quality we will keep receiving poor quality!

Now we are ready to sail for the Horn
Weigh hey, roll and go!
Our boots and our clothes, boys, are all in the pawn
To be rollicking randy dandy-oh!
Heave a pawl, oh heave away!
Weigh hey, roll and go!
The anchor's on board and the cable's all stored
To be rollicking randy dandy-oh!
Soon we'll be warping her out through the locks
Weigh hey, roll and go!
Where the pretty young girls all come down in their frocks
To be rollicking randy dandy-oh!

They left out everything that made Black Flag really good and thought Yup! this gotta be what people want, just dumbed down ship battles. And thank you for putting into words what always bothered me about live service games with their endless grinding: they are basically trainers to get people into the habit of mindless repetition for mininmal gratification. It's as if they were commissioned by the bosses of the world to condition an army of worker drones, cogs in the machine.

No boarding combat, no ship capturing This is more like a sailing simulator tbh.
Also, for anyone who's desperate for a true pirate game, but has only played Black Flag and Rogue I recommend trying out Atlas (2018. It has been out for a while, as far as I know and it kinda never moved out of the beta phase, but good god it has everything you would want of a pirate game. It even has ship building from scratch for god sake!

This is so sad. I was excited about this game ever since it was announced. I expected an enhanced Black Black, maybe with some more gritty aspects, realistic ship sailing (like having to learn to use the wind) and a killer storyline that would be close to some real pirate stroies. But we got a grindy arcade game, with no hand to hand combat or island exploring. I tried the beta but it wasn't for me, a heavy disapointment

The moment I heard about this game I knew it was going to flop. The only way I give live service games a go is if they are free to play to begin with and then maybe i will buy a battlepass or some cosmetics if the game is good. No way am I paying for live service its far too much of a risk to part with my hard earned cash. Suicide squad is another perfect example and marvels avengers before that.

I saw 10 seconds of the walking around gameplay and could instantly say it could've been cut and no one would care.
When they make hub areas to walk around and only talk to vendors and receive missions and buy resources, you could've done it in a menu. There needs to be a reason you are walking around over doing it through a menu. E. g. some actual gameplay on foot like combat, platforming, puzzles.

Charging over the top price, then asking for more, is the ol'double-dip that I hate. I'm with you all the way on this one Jake.
I think I was wanting this to be a bit more swaying towards a realistic version of Sea of Thieves. Good single player, great co-op, challenging crew-vs-crew. Sadly it looks to be a vessel to transfer your money from wallet to wallet. You can't even get off the ship.

You forgot to mention that anybody can try the full game for 8 hrs. and decide for themselves. All the progress is saved if you decide to buy the game at any time later. So go there try it (should be more then enough time to have a proper picture about the game. Stop just nitpicking and elaborating on theory of how it should be. Go -> try -> decide.

The fact that Ubisoft would release a game for $70 when nearly 100% of pre-release reviews said it was subpar is infuriating. Maybe Ubisoft can have a meeting with Hello Games and inquire how they made No Mans Sky a success. Without MAJOR updates/changes, this game is a waste of 10 years of development, and God knows how much money.

The first AAAA game!
Awful
Absurd
Atrocious
Arrogant
That describes how Ubisoft have been talking this couple of months. Don't regret if we don't make good games anymore, get used to don't own games, etc. They are just getting what they deserve and with Piss and Boners it's just another nail in the coffin.

Having been playing this for the last week the thing that frustrated me is the feeling that stuff has been artificially removed for the sake of drip feeding content. Are they seriously trying to say that after ten years to get to where they are they're going to retrofit the gameplay to handle fleets in 6 months

And Ubisoft sell it as the first aaaa game, even Sid Meiers Pirates offers more gameplay varieties let alone AC Black Flag their own game. It's no more than a shooter in a pirate setting without on-foot combat in flashier presentation. A pity as there aren't many high budget pirate games to begin with.
