I’ve come to realize single player linear games with a tad bit of exploration are my favorite kind of games to play. Games like Bioshock, last of us, and dead space. Games where I press one button to collect loot, and all the loot matters. It keeps me just invested enough without having to worry about inventory management when I pick up too much trash. Within the looting of useful items are audio logs or notes that tell a story or add to the story of the world you’re in. Exploration is encouraged to find more ammo, more materials. But the exploration also won’t have you going off track for the next 3 hours. Just enough upgrades and lite rpg mechanics to have multiple play styles that work. But not too many rpg mechanics to where excessive inventory management is required and certain upgrades/choices on what to upgrade aren’t detrimental to the experience. They also tend to be shorter games to get through, and I’ll take a shorter more polished experience over a longer more expansive one thats unable to keep that polish or just isn’t from the get go. And 20-25 hours within that specific game world is usually enough for me, and after I’m ready to move on to another world/franchise. Open world games take too long. Spend too much time in a world where I’m no longer feeling what brought me there. Maybe I’m into knights and dragons this month. Could be space next month. Those shorter linear games support my need to change it up.

When I think of this category, I think of the recent God of War reboot. One of my favorite games of all time.
Im not exactly old as dirt, but as I've left my twenties I find myself not gaming with the frequency I used to. Still loving gaming, but life stuff gets in the way. So it's lovely to have a game you can play for 3 days straight, then not touch for 3 weeks. Jump back in and just be able to go. The narrative is so focused it's easy to remember where you were after a break and its so focused you could turn off the UI and still figure it out.
I really really want more of that. As cool as the Assassins Creed formula switch up is in a lot of ways. Its overwhelming. I end up ignoring 80% of the stuff on the map go just play the game. Since nowadays I either want an excelleng narrative driven story like TLoU or God of War. Or I want go get competitive and fire up Overwatch or Siege. That inbetween is where like 90% of the industry lies and I just dont care much for it anymore.
Although if I was 15 on summer break I'm sure something like AC: Origins would be amazing and I'd probably get close to 100%

here is just the tip of the iceberg for linear games, especially walking sim. there are so many people publishing walking sim recently and a lot more as work in progress. for gamers, it's nice to have choices. for devs, you're competing in highly competitive genre. I know that everyone want to publish their games especially the first game. but as a gamer, I won't buy some random slop that has nothing special to offer especially the walking sim disguised in horror genre.

This is the list I want. Linear games in general are just better pack more interesting things to do an have richer worlds.
Look at the difference in quality between space marine 2, a linear game and whichever bland open world ubisoft spunked out recently. One is made with love, takes you on a rip roaring adventure and respects your time, the other is boring open world where 90% of the game is ticking off points in the map.

Brothers: A tale of two sons was not made by Hazelight studio. It was made by Starbreeze Studio where the founder of hazelight, Josef Fares worked. He pitched the idea of Brothers to them and then directed it for Starbreeze. Later on he went on to founded hazelight. This remake of brothers has noting to do with either studio and was made by Avantgarden SRL and its not good. Play the original.

Thanks for making content like this! I watch a lot of gaming content, but so much of it is skewing negatively, talking almost exclusively about how bad games and the industry are, and how we hate everything. It's nice that Gameranx always has a mix of videos that I can watch when I need a break from negativity!

I'm gonna go ahead and call it: Silent Hill 2 will be surprisingly good, maybe even exceptional. Go ahead, laugh all you want. But as an OG SH fan who's been here since the very beginning, and a cynical gamer who scoffs at anything Bloober, I have faith in this one. Don't ask me why - I just feel it.

Yet again Indiana Jones is going to fail miserably because of one reason, the game is in 1st person, the first thing you do when designing a game based on Indiana jones is you make 3rd person, people have tried doing a tomb raider or uncharted style game in first person and it has failed miserably.

I really wish Kunitsu-Gami was getting a physical release. I'm not saying I don't trust corporations to preserve good and interesting video games, but they don't have a good record on that. (I know Capcom seems better than most, but Capcom is not, and never will be, your friend)

Im not always commenting but i had to Say it:

I’m hoping to try Soace Marine 2 when I have the money for it but at the same time I can’t help feeling like the Space Marines are a bit overdone and it would be nice to get something else. Like where’s the Sisters of Battle Equivalent of Space Marine 2

Interesting list! With all the games in my backlog, I'm always looking for a decently priced game in the 20 hour range. Maybe you guys have done them already but I wouldn't mind seeing content on linear games from 2020, 2021, 2022, & 2023.

90% of games aren't actually completed. 90%. Games keep going up in price, so now I am very careful in the games I buy. I only buy games that have been slashed down in price by at least 50% and play most of my games on Gamepass.

Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2 is my GOTY. I've had it on my steam wish list for almost 2 years. After playing the first game a year after it came out I was wondering why I had not heard anything about a sequel as good as it was.

Path of the Goddess’ is very recommended, a unique mix between third person combat and light strategy. It’s not a full price, and should get as many sales as possible so Capcom’ keep releasing new and unique IPs

Is that _Until Dawn_ game officially being labeled as a remake Because it appears to be more of a remaster than anything else a significantly polished and visually updated remaster, but a remaster none the less.

Jake, buddy. it was in the title, we get it. these are linear games. Just because they are, in no way means 'linear' must be said 32 times in the video. Especially to describe the same game, back to back 9: 19

Another top list with Black Myth Wukong. im sure its a good game but damn bro cant you think of anything else Almost feels like you just throw the game in there anytime you can't think of a different one lol

Astro bot is now in my top 5 games of all time. It gave me hope that games would someday return to what made them fun! It’s a bright candle in a mostly dark and corporate, live service game world
reply

I just want to play a linear single player FPS campaign like the COD ones or Battlefield ones. So tired of the open world games where you have to collect all manners of loot and a billion side quests.
