For me P zomboid is easily top 1 survival.
In the first couple hours that you play the game u can die literally to anything.
In the first couple hundred hours. You die to mistakes.
In the first couple thousand hours. YOU CHASE THE ZOMBIES reversing into predator status, making HUUUUGE hordes only to use 1 molotov to just walking kiting the zombies and watch the entire city LITERALLY burn cause the fire spreads everywhere!
The amount of customization that the game has its ridiculous, so far i am in the hundred hours area and usually i die cause of silly mistakes. You also need to pay attention to cloths, you need to patch them cause if u get scratch from a zombie that can also infect you and then you have to drink your old trusty pal. Mr. Bleach! Down the hatch baby!

Not many people might know this about The Long Dark game, but you lose everything in the chapter with the jail and the inmates. Every time you enter the jail, the guy at the door takes everything from you (the player, so the next time you do a job for them you have nothing, not even food or water with you. What I did in that chapter is that i found a small room with a stove, bed, etc and put all the necessary stuff from my bag to the cabinet that was there. This room is near the main gate of the jail, a few meters away from the main door. Leave everything you might need in there, otherwise you are going to make your life even harder.

Nothing is harder than my life. My father unalived my mom and sister in front of me, I was next but was able to escape. He then did it to himself. I was raised in by a uncaring foster family, kicked out on my 18th bday. I then found the love of my life, we got married and she became pregnant. She and my child died in a car accident. I was just diagnosed with a rare type of brain cancer that will certainly be fatal. All these games are much easier.

I never had an irrational fear of the ocean until i played stranded deep, i grew up around the beach and ocean and would swim places where the bottom was barely imaginable, let alone reachable without scuba gear, and never had an issue, but after playing stranded deep, i gained the thalasophobia trophy in real life. lmfao
This war of mine is an incredible game, definitely one of those heavy games, definitely messes with your head a bit

I love the building in Sons of the Forest, but it almost seems like the game is discouraging it (at least back when I played in beta. After a few days, my base was constantly under attack and just felt like a waste of time and resources. When I went to complete the story, it was significantly easier to just go from place to place and not even bother with a base.

Honorable mention to Ostranauts.
A followup to NeoScavenger, and placed in the same universe, Regardless of it's goals or appearence, it's a a survival sim in the same vein of My Summer Car where you could accurately call it a life sim, with space ships rather then cars, and fairly in-depth space physics for flight (albeit it only plays on a single plane.

Omg, I forgot how much I HATED Ancestor: The Humankind Odyssey!
It was so damn obscure, it took forever to figure out the most basic sht and eventually drove me crazy. I started looking stuff up, but even after that it was annoyingly difficult in other ways.
I'm sure there are much tougher games, but that one annoyed me more than anything

Icarus although still being early access, deserves a mention since the game is you versus mother nature. Finally build your first little cabin after hours of playing Make sure when you leave to farm resources you would be able to make it back so your little cabin don't get blown away by a wind storm or struck by lightning and lit on fire

I've spent 1000s of hours in SCUM. If they ever get out of EA, add the NPCs/Quests, and fix the unrealistic aspects of it (if your tire touches the water, it explodes, it be such a great game. The multiplayer is just as fun as dayZ with a friendlier interface and building system. Now if they'd just add the SANDBOX OF 7 Days To Die.

Kind of disappointed to not see Icarus on this list. Definitely my favourite survival craft game, and its got a pretty steep learning curve with resource management mechanics for food, water and oxygen, lots of deadly creatures to contend with and one of the better systems for replay-ability.

Living an adult life, paying bills, constantly buying food, cooking, cleaning etc is already a resource management survival game, why would I like to worry also about that in a virtual space Never got a pleasure of this types of games. Maybe if I was younger, I'd love it, but not now.

Whoa now falcon. Did you just say that coconut water has awful taste You must've had some packaged preservative-ridden stuff if you think that. Next time you're on vacation, go to a tropical country and try out some authentic natural coconut water. You'll change your opinion real fast.

There is more lines of code written for the metabolism system of SCUM, than all these games combined. Truly, its an amazing game. DayZ has nothing on SCUM. I think you glanced over SCUM in this video a bit too fast. Its faaaarrrrr more detailed than you imagine.

I wish that Ancestors game was abit more experimental with the evolution stuff. Imagine if you could evolve into a water dwelling animal, or a cave, became a night time beast, really able to twist how you evolve and mess with the whole world almost.

Damn. I've played about half of these : /
7D2D is my #1 go-to survival game, but Mist Survival & No One Survived are good too.
For space survival games - Space Engineers is by far the best, but some people like Empyrion too.

Subsistence is by far my favourite, I hate zombie games but love the challenge of grinding to get to a comfortable level. Great updates and new challenges added, worth the time to to get to know the game. Thanks for this list

I've played so many of these (most of them actually) and the Card Survival one is actually probably my favorite on this list. I play that just to chill out now that I know how to not die in the first storm that comes by. :D

Day Z having people starve because they didn't have a can opener is dumb. If your life actually depended on it you would smash a can with a rock, eat the food off the dirty ground, and like it more than off a clean plate.

I would add ECO to this otherwise fantastic list. You have to survive as a community with your ultimate goal to avert a cataclysm in the form of an incoming meteor but without ruining the planet in the process of doing so.

I recall Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide. The fact that my savegame and level progress was carried over into Dead Island Riptide made Riptide all the more dangerous, since enemies were all at high levels
