I've been playing the game for 6 hours now. I've some things to say about the game.
It's MW5: Mercenaries with the tiniest bit of BattleTech added to it.
You can freely swap between any of your Lance (Star in this game) and play them freely. You don't fail until your last Mech is downed, much the same as the update they did to MW5: M almost a year and a half ago or so.
Your Mech list available to you is quite dismal compared to the 40-50 total mechs available in MW5: M. In this game, off the top of my head, i think it's more like 16 or 20 or so total Mech chassis.
However, there is hardpoint customization, to a minor degree. By that, i mean that your mech might have 3 ballistic and 2 missile slots to start with, but you can swap it in to something like a 6 total laser hardpoint, or 2 ballistic, 1 missile, 1 asc, etc etc options. It allows you to change your Mechs up in to various hardpoint configurations. There is not saved loadouts, that I'm aware of, so unless you have spare Mechs (which is NOT hard to come by, as there is no ammo and no repair bill post-mission, leaving you with an abundance of cash) In addition, you have to play that Mech a few times to unlock those additional hardpoint configurations.
The 'main character', Jayden, has atrocious pilot skills for you to upgrade. If you intend to use missiles, lasers or ballistics, you're far better off using one of the other pilots, who are actually dedicated to those tasks. In MW5: M, this was not an issue; your mc was a 60 stat behemoth in that game. In this, the lance captain is no better than anybody else, and is arguably WORSE because of the non-dedicated skills allocated to him that you can't even change.
They did actually give stats you CAN altar on each pilot. They are homogenized though, and are bonuses like stat increase while using Medium Mechs, and something like, stat bonus while in a Gargoyle Mech. Those kinds of stats. But, i think they're permanent, so allocate what you are definitely going to use and nothing else.
The game is easier so far imvho than MW5: M. You don't have the entire galaxy map available to you. At least, i don't. So you are not racing against time and balancing a check book. In addition, like i said, no payments for repairs nor ammo. I don't think you even pay a fee for destroyed limbs and lost/broken parts. It's THAT kind of easy.
That said: you can still lose. Ordering your lance around is going to save you some pain, but you have 5 in total, not 4, so even THAT is easier than MW5: M.
As far as I've seen so far, you do NOT have access to ANY Mechs from MW5: M. This might change, but i'm only at the second offensive, almost third, in the campaign. Honestly, I'm hoping it does change.
There's also a lot of stat boost upgrades to get. A lotttt of them. Your Mechs are already superior too the Inner Sphere's Mechs, but after you get everything, your lightest Light Mech is probably going to be the equivalent of 1. 4 Medium Mechs. Your Assault Mech, one single Assault, is going to be bringing firepower like it's 3 Annihilators packing LBX's.

A lot of people don't even know the lore of the game and cry about it and dei without knowing literally anything of the lore.
The mechlab is simple because that is how it is in lore, you don't have crazy customization like you do in mwo that didn't exist not for clan omnimechs and definitely not for innersphere mechs.
You can swap omnimech parts just fine, attack different loadouts as well, it does just fine on that front allowing you to build different versions of mechs for different setups.
Theirs upgrading mechs and upgrading your star mates though the options given for the star is strange to say the least sort of specializing them in certain setups.
Research to improve the weapon systems and so forth.
It is actually pretty good as for optimization, its hard to say, its built in unreal engine 5, people don't realize unreal engine 5 is a rough engine to be using and how much destructible terrain and so forth also puts quite the hit on hardware, so those with 2000 series cards not running like 2070s and up are probably going to have a rough time even at 1080p.
Anyone with 30 series cards will be fine as long as you're not touching the 60 cards, a 3060 is weaker than the older 2070 supers but you'll probably be fine at 1080p.
4060 and above will more than be fine, so higher end systems won't have a problem.
The game can be rough, as for the AI it is much better than MW5 mercs, but it still has issues at times, I haven't had any real issues with the game myself, but I have a much higher end system with a 7950x3d and 4080 super and 64gb of ram. that is not by any means a common pc setup.
The difficulty is definitely there, the 4th mission in was rough the stealth part was easy in fact you can just solo do it with a mech and jumpjets and then call your star over for the last section.
The boss right is rough after a couple waves of other light and medium mechs and if you mess up and engage the other lance that patrols around that makes it a bit harder as well.
After that it tapers off a good amount in difficulty again and then starts to jump up, this current mission im on the end section I decided to see if you can attempt to engage the elite enemies. hahahahaha even with some heavies oh man that went poorly I would imagine maybe someone can handle it and escape but its rough.
The biggest complaint I have is not having any checkpoints during missions, meaning if you fail you're redoing the entire mission which is exhausting to say the least, some of these missions can be fairly long and restarting from the beginning of the mission to redo the entire thing is not very fun. I do not know why there are not checkpoints to go back to.

Mechwarrior 5 by all accounts now looking at Clans was a bare bones test drive by both the devs and the fans.
A lot of Quality of Life, engine updates, armor, weapons. you can name it that were entered in as Mods for MW5 ended up being incorporated into Clans. If anything most of the Mods that you'd install to make MW5: Mercenaries fun and more enjoyable can be found in clans with a PGI twist.
Also this is more of we of the Battletech fans know the outcome of this story, but boy its fun as hell to see it go from a bunch of stories, Alphastrike ect into a full fledge game.
A few notes.
A fusion reactor in lore does not go KA-BOOM, when it comes to the writing team the term Stackpoling is mentioned a lot. Its named after Michael J. Stackpole who often makes things that shouldnt go boom. go boom. So in lore a Fusion Reactor once its breach just belches fire due to containment loss. So the team taking time to stop the whole Fusion reactor going up like a nuclear bomb is nice.
The Guass Rifle changes are hit or miss.

MW 5 Merc with mods on PC is better.
I played this game for several hours in two seperate sessions and this just isnt it.
They downloaded a patch on Xbox today that seemed to smooth out the menu lag the game had on the drop ship.
The story seems cool but the game itself is really meh.
The friendly A. I. is dumb as a pile of bricks and get smashed on the regular. They love to get in your way consistently. They will also get stuck and just stay there sometimes.
The hit detection at range is not very good.
Its just a better looking version of Mercs but I think it will not have the repayable nature of Mercs because it is a linear affair.
Play on game pass but they want 80 for deluxe which is nutz.
The scanning stuff is dumb and the cut scene models look like they have something terribly wrong with them

The same number, different game is kinda MechWarrior tradition. They always had 2 entities with the same number, but different focuses and could be considered stand-alone games from each other. They'd usually use same engine and same assets, hence the same number (MW5 is a little different, but they still use same assets from previous engine. So, MechWarrior 4: Vengeance was a linear story-based campaign game, then followed with MW4: Mercenaries, where you jump from world to world and take on contracts for different factions (and the super fun arena. MW3 was linear; MW3: Pirate's Moon had 2 story paths. MW5 did a switcharoo and started with the Mercenaries concept first before creating a linear campaign. Also, MW5: Clans sees you play from the opposite side as the campaign in MW3!

Why does it look so graphically unimpressive. It totally doesn't sell the sensation of piloting a giant machine. It just feels like you are playing as a small human sized robot instead. There is no sense of impact from either visual cues or audio. I really don't know how you can say this looks good. Compared to what If we are comparing to other mechwarrior games, then sure. They all look rather terrible. This is running on Unreal engine 5 yet if you told me this came out in 2015, I would have no problem believing it. Hell even 2013 or 2014 seem plausible for this. Titanfall looked so much better and its much older. Plus it actually somewhat felt like you were in a giant machine there

I bought, 7 or so hours playtime behind now. it's not a masterpiece but definitely holds my attention! A certain play-through is in order here guys. the core loop of the game is a bit similar than the recent Aliens Dark Descent. Between missions you allocate resources and research mechs, train your pilots. then you go into mission, have fun (the weapon effect on enemies is really satisfying. and repeat. cutscenes spice up the story. nothing that we haven't seen before but well executed package, satisfying to test out mechs you customized. a solid 8. 5/10 game is nothing to sneer at these days; so many crap games out there. I am having good time at least.

Not buying this, I am sick of Clans
However seems like they did the reverse of Mechwarrior 2
MW2 released MW2 Mercenaris second while MW5 Mercs was first
First MW2 had 2 campaings, one Wolf, one Jade Falcon during Inner Sphere invasion, they later added a DLC for Ghost Bear but never did Smoke Jaguar
This MW5 Clans seems like a modern MW2, maybe they have DLC with new campaings for other Clans along with new Mechs and other stuff
Not sure if they are using original Clans weapons stats or the modified MWO versions, if original that may be partly why it seems too easy to some people

have they fixed the horrible bug from release where the ballistic weapons make the players POV just aim upwards instead of having recoil its like someone is pulling backwards and downwards on the back of your head while the mech does not move an inch. forcing you to look upwards against your will even though the mechs arm or whatever the ballistic is mounted in never moves.
now i have pointed it out, you will forever notice it. rip the awesome gauss build you had: P
update: just tried a backup copy. looks pretty but super glad i did not drop the $ on it. i miss good mech games.

yet another PC game with stutters and frame drops. I'm done playing those games, it feels like trash. While I actually loved FFXV, it's the first PC game that felt completely ruined by stutters (on the steam version since apparently the epic version didn't have that issue sigh. I'm so done with that, I play indie on pc and AAA on console now. I tried FFXVI demo on PC, even with my 7800xt, frame gen etc I get frame drops all the time, so I'm buying it on PS5 instead

Heat is not a problem because you are used to late succession wars inner sphere which had mainly bad working single heatsinks. This is Clan tech, they have excelently working double heatsinks. and they explode more easily coz clan mechs all have XL Engiens. And for thoes who complaine you can do less things in the Mechlab, you are NOT the Boss of a Merc Company here, you are a soldiar in an army, so of corse your level of customiation will be restricted.

The dumbing down of the Mech management in combat is so disappointing to hear. You used to not only shut down but blow up if you didn't manage your heat. You could override the auto shutdown, had a limited reserve of emergency coolant, and even the option to jettison ammo hard points before they blew off a limb. No wonder the weapons don't feel like they have as much impact, with no risk, there would be nothing stopping you from one shotting everything.

The story is very linear, the equipment selection is fairly limited but it has been out for 26 hours (at time of writing) so perhaps more will come out later.
I've been comparing it to Mercenaries all day and I've just realised Mercenaries has been out for years and has a huge library of mods, and Clans has barely been out for a day with no mods so far (and I cant tell if theres gonna me mod support for the game yet but I do hope so.

Wish we could have this AND mercenaries more sandbox do anything like modes.
With this Clans game you are restricted to OMNI locked mechs and won't be touching much of the mech configuration, so no custom building super tanky fun stompies. Its a VERY sterile experience in that regard.
People say Career sandbox CAN'T have a decent story(s) like this. BUT I say their wrong, we just need a developer who is willing to do it.

Been a MW fan since MW2 play8ng with a Sidewinder Joystick. After hearing the reviews and lack of story in Mercenaries I decided to pass, this on the other hand I will be picking up after a few months. Glad to hear the controls on consoles is decent. Having gone the PS route for the past few generations it’s good to know a game like this is decent. BG3 while not perfect was decent to play on PlayStation.

Wish the campaign was longer, and took place over many more planets. Also wish that there was non-storytelling version where one can play any of the 4 invading Clans. I am glad that PGI did not do their equal but different flavour thing with Clan Tech, as they did in MWO.
I feel that the idea of keeping the sibko group together is more of a Clan Ghost Bear idea than Smoke Jaguar.

mech warrior 5 mercs is fantastic. like really good. Bare bones missions Lad, the game allows you to explore and there is a tremendous amount of content, I couldnt care less about the linear story. Clans is mixed on steam. Mercenaries is Very positive, as of right now, clans is a dumbed down streamlined version of Mercs. this review is extremely disingenuous of how good mercs is

Sound design is not great. Thats a thing with Piranha. They dont put priority on good sound design. Many of the sounds in MWO are placeholders by their own admission. They later said they would not update them to allow modders to do it. Ive played some amazing games with meh graphics but beautiful sound design and those are often the games I remember the most. Shame

Won't be getting it. Was excited for clans and cool story, but not at the expense of classic mech gameplay and customization. Mechs in this universe don't insta-reverse strafe and insta-change direction. They're walking tanks with a torso and control as such. Also we can't even manipulate armor values let alone a lot of other normal things Gimme a break.
