I don't like the idea of game mechanics being patented. From what I remember about the nemesis system, it was very broad. Something like non- boss enemies coming back for revenge.
The load screen mini game thing is another big one. Maybe patent a specific game to a load screen, but all mini games in a load screen is ridiculous.
I recently tried playing the Medium, I stopped because dying seemed like trial and error and the load screens took a little too long or the auto save moved me a little to far back, with how slow the character moved. The split screen world was interesting though, too bad it's tacked on to a mediocre game.
Parents should be really specific otherwise they become stifling. Imagine if side scrolling was patented, or 3d environments were patented. Or jumping was patented. Or using a gun in a video game was patented. It's ridiculous, this doesn't foster healthy competition. Patents don't allow these machanics to grow and evolve.
Instead they are a means to hurt the competition, make the broadest patent possible, then prevent anyone who dares use it.
I mean the sanity system translated to video games is bs, it's been done in table top RPGs, it wasn't even an original idea, and now we can't have that in our games.

Huh your little clip of FF7 rehash actually makes me more interested in the game than anything I have seen thus far. Every other clip makes the combat look totally different to the original and has been the biggest (but not only tbh) reason I've skipped it despite the kind of gamer that owned FF7 on Playstation and PC and completed multiple times on both formats.
Guess now I'm just waiting on the whole game being availble on pc for about the price of 1 game or preferably the price of 1 game I completed about 27 years ago but I'll settle for the price of 1 new game without battle passes/season passes/mandatory DLCs/the other scams.

After seeing this video and learning about the many things that got restricted by devs and publishers for no reasons whatsoever
I wish from software did the same thing and pattened their formula
The Action adventure RPG genre suffered greatly bc every week there is a new souls coming out
It’s getting really annoying bc it’s my fav genre and it’s slowly running thin of the games that I would like to play

Number 2 ) Arrow Direction patent sucks because so many games would benefit from it especially open worlds like Banjo Tooie which was boderline cryptic especially for a platformer collect a thong also Deadspace solved it by providing a line going towards next objective nevertheless i fell many open worlds should have this as an option and i know some ppl dont want hand holding yet sometimes u just want to play and get the job done especially if your gametime is limited.

there's plenty of previous work for dual reality (and no, it's not Silent Hill) so I don't think that one would hold in court.
The ones that sting are Nemesis and the TotK abilities, though there is precedent for things very similar to UltraHand (they just didn't work so well, but it was the same idea.
The Loading screen patent sucks and it already expired, most devs by now figured other ways to work around long loading times but it's still usable.

Just a clarification. Patents have to be specific. This means that a game mechanic cannot be patented, but rather specific implementations of a game mechanic can. This mean that others can implement the same mechanic, they just cannot do it the same way as in the patent.
(And a footnote - we do not yet know which patent Nintendo is suing over. It may be around the Pokeball, but they have over 3000 active Japanes patents right now)

A big middle finger to Bandi Namco for patenting minigames during loading screens. We could've had a fun library of cool interactive loading screens, but instead, 99% of games were forced to have a generic screen with nothing to do in it, because Bandai thought others weren't allowed to have good things. And now the patent is over, we rarely even have (long) loading screens anymore. Real unethical move on their part.

I remember I had this one guy in Shadow of War his name was Zathra the Keen Eyed I killed him by like cutting into his head and he lost an eye he came back with a metal plate on that side and his name was changed to Zathra the One Eyed and I killed him again by cutting into the other side of his head taking out his remaining eye and then he came back for a final time as Zathra the Blind I decapitated him that time.

Pretty sure others have as well, but Rebellion has basically been using the Last Know Position mechanic in the Sniper Elite games for years, haven't they Just curious why Ubisoft has never come down on them for it. I don't know how it works exactly, but Ubi holds an unregistered trademark on it, not a patent or registered TM. Maybe someone schooled in trademark law could shed some light on what's going on there

I haven't followed Pokemon since the early 2000s so I don't know when Arceus came out, but I think it's a more recent game(could be wrong) and if that's the case then I would think that the Palworld devs would only have to prove that that mechanic was already there during development before Arceus was released in order for that case to be thrown out. At least that's how I think it would work here in the US.

These videos pop up over and over about how evil developers are when they patent something, but I’m yet to hear anyone mention that this is how everything in the world of developing works, and if other developers than the patent holder wants to use the technology there is the option of trying to get a licensing deal with the patent holder. so just saying nobody else can use isn’t really correct.

00: 15: 20 The mark and execute mechanic was around before Splinter Cell integrated it. I don't know if you remember a game on the PS2 from 2003 called, Mark of Kri. But, it had the same mechanic, where you marked several enemies and then offed them all in that sequence.
EDIT: LOL. just got to that part of the video where you mention Mark of Kri. :)

In short, people are very petty. You can blame who you want, copycats are a thing, and nothing is more demoralizing than a thief. If that's what you're down with, there's no honor there. Don't have to ask if you have enough of an imagination left to see a whole world full of mindless drones, copying after one another just to get a dollar. It's sad.

This new generation gets instant gratification with everything these days. Back in my day, we had long ass loading screens, the internet was slow and took forever to upload a video or song, and if we wanted anything new to play or watch we had to go to the video store. Now it’s all instant with the click of a button. Spoiled I say.

I actually hate how the dialogue wheel has become so popular, because of how limiting it is. I much prefer how Dragon Age did it, where you could have any number of dialogue options, and weren’t limited to a binary of good, neutral, or bad. Just felt a lot more free, and like you’re genuinely role-playing a character.

isnt it super cool how there is something as epic as the nemesis system but is just being mothballed. why are big corps like WB just so dumb at managing these kind of things they just want it to be exclusive for one thing even if thats 10 years ago and nobody talks about it anymore. such a waste

I actually hate this move of patenting mechanics. Reeks of greed. For instance, WB has absolutely no scope of using the nemesis system in any of the live action crap they're so desperate to dish out, but they don't want the gaming industry to benefit from that mechanic either Pathetic.

And the issue I've been hearing with the Nintendo and Palworld lawsuit, the patent supposedly is so vague, any game with a creature capturing mechanic can be put in the crosshairs next. Meaning something like Cassette Beasts, or Digimon could be taken down next if Nintendo wanted to

That ping wheel was in epic games: Paragon; way before Aphex existed.
And any company patenting something in a fkn game are aholes and hurtful to YOU THE GAMER.
They make it harder for other developers to make good games FOR YOU out of GREED.

Where the hell is ARKHAM
It should be NO 1 on the list and don't give me the other games like Mordor have the same type of free flow combat response because that's pretty much all they got in common.
