A few apps I still use, older versions to match my old butt. xD These I've only ever used on windows, not sure about mac or Linux.
IRFanview Image viewer.
Supports a boatload of image formats, you can easily convert images between formats and also batch convert images in bulk. Its easy, its simple, its awesome.
GPU-Z
Awesome for folks who want to know what is happening with their GPU when rendering, or gaming. Memory usage, temperatures, GPU load etc.
Format Factory
Awesome tool to convert any image or video to another format. Best darn converter around.
Winamp
Best music player I've ever had. Can also play videos, has a lot of customization.
Bandicam
Good, simple alt to OBS for recording videos or screenshots.
Large Address Aware
An app that allows you to patch 32-bit apps to be able to use/read more system memory, making them more stable.
Foxit Reader
Simple PDF reader/viewer
Visipics
Fairly old app, but allows you to remove duplicate images on your drive, super handy too
Pandora Recovery
A tool to recover files you may have deleted with shiftDelete among other things. (I do that far too often. xD)
Flawless Widescreen
A simple app that allows you to change the resolution and sometimes the FOV for games that don't have these options built in
Audacity
Audio editing tool, super handy, especially when you're also someone that likes to mod games.

I highly recommend Ninite. I've been using it for years. I have a tendency to erase everything and start from scratch with a different OS for various reasons. So, this has come in very handy very often.
RetroArch. I didn't care for it. I found the menu system to be a real pain. Frankly, I prefer using individual emulators on their own. Not everything needs to be in one client.
Notepad I don't recall ever using. However, it looks very similar to EditPlus, that I used to use exclusively for web design back in the day. If it's close enough in design, I'd recommend it.
-Prism. I have to check that out. I'm using GD for downloading mods, and MultiMC to actually run the packs due to its log and simple mod disable function. The system has worked great so far. but it can be a real hassle since I need both open to download mods other mods needed that GD didn't auto-download. That means both client main windows, a log window, and two Explorer windows open the whole time. -
Edit: Prism Launcher is a blatant MulitMC knockoff with downloadable mods like GD. The downloads window kinda sucks. It's not worth it. Just get MultiMC and GDLauncher.

for me, it's:
FanControl (adjust all the case/cpu/gpu fans based on various rules)
OpenShell (Start menu replacement)
ImageGlass (image viewer)
X-Mouse Button Control (remap mouse side keys to PgUp and PgDwn)
TrafficMonitor (by zhongyang219, shows network up/down on taskbar)
iMazing (free version can still check phone battery health for ex)
ClickFix (by CemraJC, fixes broken mouse doubleclicks)

I recommend start11 if you can’t stand the new windows 11 UI. It’s highly customizable, you can configure the start menu to the look and feel of older windows OS, remove bing search from results, combine elements from older OS like tiles in start menu, etc etc.
It’s paid but the version trial is 30 days free. Well worth the purchase.

I fix computers for my job.
My advice: avoid installing any; Many have malware attached and almost all others when not being used are sat draining your resources and slowing down your machine.
Or ignore me, follow the advice in this video and give me more computers to fix - thanks GameRanx but i dont need more; you should stick to Games.

Not sure if you know considering you showed a C64 as long dead. But it is being made again in a couple of different configurations. C64X. Like an emulation machine in a C64 shell or a modern PC in the same classic shell. Incase anyone is interested in the old school gaming. Even has options of different colors and rbg keys.

Considering smartphone use has curbed my old pc side hustle I was surprised that I was still up to date on my knowledge of most of these apps. A couple of new additions I may try like nanazip but none the less 7-zip still does what I need it to do, but a newer iteration may be more intuitive for someone else.

Can try Geek Uninstaller or Bulk Crap Uninstaller, both are great and free.
The former doesn't require installation and small size.
They will help to remove any left registry in the system.
Have been using K-Lite Codec Pack for many years, but found that VLC and PotPlayer are better

Prism launcher is really very good. But my eagle friend showed clips of Minecraft Bedrock while prism launcher is a Launcher for Minecraft Java.
If anyone uses the default minecraft Java Launcher and enjoys modding, I would strongly suggest to try Prism Launcher

Do I just have some mythical version of Geforce XP that isn't awful I've never had any issue with it, though I generally only launch it to update drivers then close it. It runs very light in the background so long as you dont leave the full fat app running 24/7.

Usefull stuff here. I'm such a huge fan of Good Old Games, it's my default place when buying new games. I love to know that I'm in control of the files to the point where if I want to let a friend play something I own, I can do that with GOGs DRM free installers.

Dunno why you specified Windows 11 for NanaZip. It works just fine on Windows 10.
An alternative to Crystal Disk Info that I think is far better is Samsung Magician. I have no idea if it works for non-Samsung drives, but it beats the pants off of Crystal.

Steam's controller settings are amazing now. I was able to rig up the classic Star Wars X-Wing/TIE Fighter games (you know, the ones for DOS) to work with the gyro controls on a PS5 controller. Took me a bit of fiddling around, but I figured it out.

For people wanting to dodge GeForce Experience because, well, it's trash. NVIDIA has an alternative now (in beta) named NVIDIA App and when you install it, it removes GeForce Experience. And it's much better than GeForce Trash Experience.

From OBS to MSI Afterburner--and no mention that MSI Afterburner does have screenshot and capture features. So if you're gaming and don't want to fumble around doing local recording with OBS, you can use MSI Afterburner.

thanks Falcon! The owning game issue has heated up with GOG slamming steam saying you get the installer forever. I prefer agent ransack for searches you might want to check it out. It lets you search within files.

I’d suggest trying virtualization software such as VMware Workstation or Oracle Virtualbox, both free for personal use, for running old operating systems to help with getting older titles to work sometimes.
