I am about 25 hours in and just fought a blighted dragon. I am having a really good time with it so far. The best comparison I can make to set expectations is that The Vailguard is A LOT like Hogwarts Legacy.
So far, The Vailguard is a fun game and was worth the time and money for me. Calling it a GOTY contender says more about how bad 2024 releases have been than how good The Vailguard is, but I’d put it in my top 5, depending on how the rest of the year and the rest of the game goes.
So far, the NPC dialogue is the same quality as Inquisition, and it really isn’t very snarky or quippy if you don’t constantly pick the Thalia (comedy) mask. Even then, what Rook says is only mildly irreverent. The thumbs-up option tends to be the overly supportive and enthusiastic dialog you’d expect in a middle-grade cartoon, the stoic option tends to be objective-focused, and the crying eye tends to just acknowledge a tinge of regret or empathy.
Regardless of your dialog choices, the NPC may say one or two lines at most in response, and then the conversation moves on as if you said nothing at all. The NPCs are more emotionally stable than in Inquisiton. Emotions in the line delivery for both Rook and NPCs are more subtle and what you would expect in an adult conversation, so people expecting the emotional stability of a toddler will think they are a little wooden.
In contradiction to dialog delivery, Rook’s parentification seeps in with Harding pretty early on. She is not the same Harding from Inquisition. During her companion quest after finding the Lyrium Dagger, Harding drives the conversation to feel like you're encouraging an 8-year-old. She was going to be my romance option for this playthrough, but that quest and her free-roam dialog made it feel gross.

One thing that i find funny is that Dragon Age always had an identity crisis related to gameplay, mechanics and art direction. It was the writing that hold everything together (2 is very lame btw. Each entry on the series diverted on a different way in those aspects, i. e. origins had a janky real time with pause, 2 had an very bad hacknslash-ish gameplay and inquisition had a bit of both and scratched a system that could work better with some polishing. Veilguard embraces the hack n slash in a fun and polished way at least (i would just liked more if it was a liiitle bit slower. The writing is the bad part, very linear, without nuances, fallout4-like, not bad as everyone says; but the level of writing of an common blockbuster adventure video game (uncharted etc, not an dark fantasy rpg like dragon age. As an adventure-action game, not an rpg, veilguard is solid

You've got to explore man, don't just tackle missions 1 by 1 there is a lot loot and so much lore. In my first hour and a half a got to read so many stuff and solved a puzzle in the light house that opened a secret room with good loot in it . when you slow the pacing a little bit by not going directly from point A to point B you get to see more stuff and you'll appreciate the world building more. I'm 6 hours in and every where i go there locked doors and stuff that I need to go back to. last thing is that so far and I can't believe that I'm saying that but the level of cringe isn't as bad as I thought and I think that's because my expectations were based upon people's opinions. it feels a bit shallow at times but other times it is good and I can see that the character building for all of these people is done throughly even if it starts weird

Very good RPG. It truly lets you live the roles of a character being extremely supportive of everyone and their actions or just very supportive. Add to that the ability to state the obvious in various ways really makes for some impactful dialogue choices. Also, the different buttons makes your attacks have a differens colours so the combat variety is excellent with many colourful builds available. Level design is also amazing with almost all the corridors having small side paths where you can pick up some gold thats lying on the floor, giving you that true sense of exploration. Also the game does not fall in to the old trap of having these one dimensional final bosses that are just evil for the sake of it without any motive or personality, by having not one but two of them. 10/10

I found a unique sword that deals low damage but every hit causes the enemy to bleed and it increases the max bleed stacks by 6. I have the mourn watch background so I can get up 11 stacks of bleed. I'm playing on nightmare difficulty as a rogue, I have been struggling a whole lot less now that I have this weapon, unless the enemy is immune to bleeding. I'm on like part 6 now and haven't run into too many people that are immune. I should probably mention that I found it on a roof top in Treviso I had to activate a bookshelf, which showed a hidden door that had the chest there. The bookshelf was inside a building but the chest was on a balcony or something outside the hidden door.

So while it's not a total disaster, it does badly on the most important stuff for the genre: RPG mechanics and immersion. Which means you are left to enjoy only the visuals, if you like the style it went for, and the action part, which while serviceable, is nothing to write home about.
Unfortunately I can't say this is attractive for new people coming in to the series, and it probably makes the original fans of the series mad since this entry departed from how the rest of the series feels and plays.

As an OG DA fan who played multiple times of Origins, 2 and Inquisition. it definitely does NOT feel like dragon age in terms of vibe and theme. Super bright 2024 led light fest but you know what I’m having fun, I feel like you gotta be a hella angry incel to let some of these things bother you so much that you won’t play a video game. I remember when I was a teen and also wanted to hop on the hate band wagon but y’all kiddos really come off as some whiney ass virgins NGL

iv put like 7 hours into the game, and man it just feels so uninteresting and linear. Its just missing everything that I look for from an RPG. Levelling up doesn't excite me in any way, all the dialog and choices are super lazy and don't actually change anything, and the loot aspect of the game feels pointless.
I just hope ME5 has way more effort put into it than Veilguard, because if that game is anything less than amazing than Bioware is 100% dead in my eyes.

Someone mentioned in a different video how the darkspawn make a come back but one of the biggest things about the darkspawn is their blood is like poison. hence why the gray wardens had to fight them but your character and his team blow through them covered in guts and nothing ever comes from it, its literally like the people who made this game and wrote it never played the other dragon age games and it shows.

Doing this video after only 10 hours of gameplay doesn't seem right. I might even call it scummy by throwing out a quick impressions while people are still making the game, only to make money - without being able to provide actual insight. Many reviewers have stated that the game starts off good enough, ends great but that the middle portion drags to painful levels.

How dare you stand where he stood Dragon Age Veilguard
No blood magic
The choice(s) are meaningless
The company itself is banning negative reviews on reddit
Just seems like bioware gave the game a guardians of the galaxy paint by numbers, and it is not faithful to the canon. And for everyone who grew up the origins, this is the biggest slap to the face

They removed what made Dragon Age a compelling universe. The story isn’t compelling and the writing is awful. Acting is barely passable. Combat is basic and boring after like 30 minutes of playing.
Definitely a departure from what made Dragon Age (and BioWare) great. The shady reviewer stuff and the political messaging is just icing on the shit sandwich.

From what i see from Veilguard, i prefer Inquisition. I liked the judgements you passed on people in that game and the overall vibe. Didn't like that they used a code for the dlc and didn't include them on disc and that they left the base game with a cliffhanger. I appreciate the fact that Veilguard doesn't have bugs though.

One of the worst games of this year you can skip this game 100% and you won't be missing anything. My cousin grew up playing these games. I got it for him and he even was so disappointed. He tried every dragon age game. He fell in love with all of them but this one he just ended up selling it

Wow. the ad-campaign on this one really dropped the ball in my case.
I played all DA games and ME games and I totally missed the launch of this one.
I thought it was not yet available and scheduled for sometime 2025. Did not even check until I saw your before you buy.

Pretty good before you buy (unbiased) take. The game does look good and polished. I like how you described the fantasy setting. Seems likes the problem that most people have with the game is more political or DEI stuff. Hopefully this game comes out on Game Pass in the future

I think everyone having access to the internet and negative mind sets takes away from any chance of playing a game for the fun of it. If I didn't see Skillups video I wouldn't have these ideas that it's a bad game. Disconnect, play the game, make your own opinions.

Idk I’m about 20 hours in and haven’t gotten any pandering dialogue. All the companions have been chill. Combat is great. Story is great. You can feel how the original team for DA wasn’t present, but it’s still a great/fun game. Especially for just 60$.

What difficulty was this The ogre fight seems like a joke. It lost a full health bar before delivering the first hit, which the player took right in the chin and lost a measly 10%hp. And there seems to be a parry system on top of that
