Drakengard 3. it certainly has an interesting story, I'll give it that, and the gameplay is passable for most of the game, not bad, but never veering into the great that Nier Automata would. Still better than 1, but I felt 2 hit a better balance in regards to it.
That said, that game is WAY more mature than I expected to see on one of these lists. There's no scenes of it, but lots of dialogue about. things that would be demonitized if I mentioned them specifically, so suffice it to say, your 'party' is into some wild stuff.
Of course, those dragon back sequences have a tendency to suck. Either the game just never quite works as well as it should(stuttering, or the sequence itself is bloated with HP values, so it takes too long to get through.
And then there's that final boss. Look it up sometime if you're curious, but that final boss, using a SINGLE BUTTON, is the hardest in gaming I've ever been able to beat. One button, but if you miss time your press, you die. over an 8 minute span of time, and you cannot skip any part of it. And there's one final shot AFTER it fades to black.

i've just played 70 hours of pathologic classic hd over the past two weeks (had never played it before! while i can agree that it isn't fun in the traditional sense, it is for sure engaging, charming, atmospheric and interesting. i've been waking up and going to sleep thinking about it; it has that kind of grip on you. anyone who enjoys deep narratives, themes, survival, creepiness, choice-driven/dialogue-heavy games, and can bear a certain level of frustration, should try it!
the huge amount of new info on lore and characters was very overwhelming at first, but it soon grew on me and became understandable. you also get used to how flourish-ly everyone speaks in that cursed town and i've only known how to speak in english for the past six years, so you native speakers will do fine, lol.
it reminds me of silent hill 2 in vibes, one of my favourite games, but it's also a totally different thing. anyway, you probably get by now how passionate i am about pathologic. just play it, guys!

I want to point out that the ds version of Crash: Mind Over Mutant was a completely different game than the console version and, I think at least, really damn sick.
It was the usual side view 2d platformer, but you fought and beat the mutants in order to take control over them. All the mutants had different gameplay abilities used for both the puzzles and combat. You could take whatever mutant you had at the end of a stage into whatever other stage, allowing you to go back through earlier stages to get more collectables behind puzzles needing certain mutants.
And the coolest part, the mutants had 3 stages of evolution based on how much wompa fruit was collected with them, where they'd get more powerful with each stage until they literally become the same mutant as the boss fights that you fo at the end of each section.

I would suggest a game forgotten for a reason, Naughty Bear. The premise was that you are a teddy bear, living on Teddy Bear Island and all the other bears hated you because of your looks. All of the materials released before the game made it seem like a stealth game where you go around tormenting the bears that have wronged you, but the actual game was a mission where you tormented the bears than a bunch of missions set in that level that had nothing to do with the core aspect of the game, like racing all of the other bears on a foot race. The original pitch being closer to what we have with the Dead by Daylight games but with Teddy Bears was a great selling point and they should have just focused on that instead of what they gave us.

I've never figured out why Nier Automata is as loved as it is. The story is nonsensical and the gameplay is way to schizophrenic the moment you figure out how it works, they change the gameplay. On the other hand, Koudelka is an awesome game that the narrator completely misrepresented, the RPG elements are fantastic and implemented interestingly. I love the hyperbole though, between whoever played the game, wrote the review, wrote the script and it seems like the narrator actually played the game or wrote the script, and it didn't pass through 6 people's hands before they read the script in the booth.

14: 15 I am surprised we haven’t gotten any modern games this generation besides High on Life that is in that adult animation comedy genre. But more specifically I’m shocked we haven’t gotten some major triple a or double a games that are like playing a full season of Futurama, Harley Quinn the animated series (if you have not watched this YOU ARE MISSING OUT! It is so good, Family Guy, South Park, Rick & Morty (though I know it has been tarnished a bit, Invincible, The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, American Dad, Solar Opposites, Disenchantment, Krapopolis, Inside Job, Bojack Horseman, etc.

In the Rule of Rose entry, I think you guys VASTLY understate how bad the combat is. Enemy hitboxes are so tiny your weapon can pass through the enemy model and not register as a hit while Jennifer's hit boxes are so big she takes damage from attacks that don't touch her character model. To compound this, common enemies not only move twice as fast as Jennifer, but they also swarm her. The enemies get invincibility frames, but Jennifer doesn't. So in addition to being stiff and clunky, the combat is also incredibly unfair, to the point where Souls players will be reduced to tears over it.

0: 15 If we also consider small studio Indie games and amateur developers, I wouldn't say that games with great stories but bad gameplay are rare at all. A single skilled and inspired writer can create a great interactive story, but creating a video game with complex, smooth and fun gameplay and possibly also high-end graphics takes a budget and a team of professionals. That's why we often get games with good stories but bad gameplay any time a zero budget developer tries to create anything else than a visual novel or a simple point and click adventure.

I'm not finished with it yet, but I could see Banishers Ghosts of New Eden on this list. The gameplay isnt as bad as most on the list, but it is rather basic when compared to other games of its ilk. However, I've found the story to be well written and compelling enough to keep me going. In particular the hauntings that you solve as the titular Banishers have some really well thought out moral decisions and character work within them. It doesn't reinvent the wheel or anything but I was pleasantly suprised by the story in spite of the gameplay.

About Koudelka;
Jake: The gameplay sucks but the dialogue is crazy good Proceeds to show gameplay with Action and Move actions only Why, why
It's like that in many other videos too. You emphasize the Getaway action driving and then show some Cut screen dialogue or just walking in a store or something, like the videos is completely randomly chosen. I am not kidding. Is it only me who don't get something: P Would really appreciate if you did something with it: )

Definitely have to bring up Zenith for this. Mechanically, it's a hot mess with barely functioning combat and enemy and skill balance all over the place. But, while the story starts off a little rough and overly meme-reliant, after a couple hours it hits it's stride and becomes something that, if you're a fan of comedy games, I'd honestly say you could stack up next to anything from Lucasarts and Sierra's heyday and it would hold up pretty well.

Witch Story or something like that was a jrpg on the NDS or Vita (something with touchscreen) which had random encounters every other step, lame dungeon design, lots of back-and-forth, completely borked magic system, and the story was. pretty lame But I was later told that's just for English speakers because the localization's story was completely gutted of everything even remotely worth mentioning. But apparently the original went a lot more in-depth.

The Witcher 2 immediately comes to mind. Loved the story, but while TW1 was experimental with its gameplay and rather charming in that regard, TW2 had very generic feeling combat that was on part with Assassin's Creed 2's, but with surprisingly little hit-response, making it far too easy to see your health drop from 100 to 0 far too late. And don't even get me started on that awful stealth.

I enjoyed we happy few. The three different stories revolving around the central theme, the shooting mechanics and the story in addition to all the quirky buried information you can dig up on the town folk through the various missions and houses you break into. There was def some missions that were less necessary but all in all I thought it had some good ideas and buckets of charm.

I always love the unexpected Rule of Rose mention. Only reason I played it probably over 15 years ago was because I heard it was banned in America. I got the game through less than legitimate means, but I did what I had to do. The gameplay sucked, but the story kept me playing. I've never forgotten this game and the dark implications. It really deserves a remake.

It's not a bad game by any means, but Shin Megami Tensei IV has an AMAZING story and underwhelming gameplay when compared to the lofty standards set by some of the other games in the SMT series. Funnily enough, the direct follow-up completely inverts this by having the best gameplay in the series and a super underwhelming story, lol.

Deadly Premonition was the first game I thought of when I saw this title I was so invested in the story, but gameplay was too abysmal to get through.
To a lesser extent I'd even say OG Persona 3. Having to trudge through Tartarus made me quit playing. It was just too boring. Yet I REALLY wanted to see the story to it's conclusion.

I remember renting a Drakengard game back in the days of block buster. I loved that shit! Just flying around on a dragon and blowing stuff up Hell yeah! Of course during a rental and my kid brain that didn't know all too well how to progress games, I didn't get too heavy into the story. I really should go back and play it again

I got an idea for a story at least. The characters in the story either are presented adults or their ages aren't verified going through some disturbing things. Only near the end it is revealed that they were all kids all along.
I'm sure someone has done this before. But still, what kind of disturbing story can I write

Anything Telltale has ever put out fits into this category.
As beloved as some of their games are the actual game part of the experience has always been pretty lackluster.
Same for DontNod, besides Jusant. and arguably Vampyr. But imo the gameplay of Vampyr was not very good, but it was good enough.
